The ânobodyâ scene in the odyssey is absolutely not just a clever punâitâs a character defining moment for Odysseus because he refuses to be nobody. He devised an incredible plan that worked and he could have saved his men and returned home much sooner but he just had to yell to the cyclops that he isnât nobodyâheâs Odysseus, king of Ithaca so now Poseidon knows who to curse which severely fucks up the rest of the journey.
The ânobodyâ scene highlights both Odysseusâs cleverness but also his arrogance and those two traits define Odysseus throughout the entire story. Itâs a foundational aspect of Odysseusâs character and cutting the scene displays a shocking level of ignorance and disregard for the themes in the source material.
I love that Margaret leaves the army. Yes, she's tired, she's seen things, but she isn't disillusioned with the army itself. She sees places where she could fit in peacetime. The thing that she realises she needs to seperate herself from is her father. Stop trying to please him and do what he expects her to do, and to do that she has to give up the army.
Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen has all the main characters giving up huge pieces of themselves.
Hawkeye's mind and what being a doctor is shifts. He was this talented up and coming surgeon but he's going to find fulfilment as a family doctor in a small town.
Mulcahy loses his hearing and can no longer preform confessions, or even listen to people which is how he was of service in a place he felt he had little to offer at times.
Charles and the solace music brought.
Klinger gives up Toledo
Colonel Potter has to leave Sophie, and he will be retiring from the army as well.
To see his family, BJ has to give up Hawkeye.
What Margaret is losing is a little more subtle, but the military has been her entire life. That's the only home she's really know, but it's also intrinsically connected to her father. She's been through a war, made friends with people she felt diametrically opposed to and found that she didn't need a man, she was enough. No need to desperately find a man to cling to and no need to made dad proud. She can do what she wants.
But also from her point of view that is giving up a huge part of herself. She's giving up her commission. She's no longer Major Houlihan.
But most of us are so anti war that that's the part where we think: good for you leave the army. But actually the good for you is no longer needing men's approval. Fully being Margaret, not Hot Lips.
i love that we see this in her goodbye speech too! she's always idolised her father and emulated him by expecting perfection, conforming to regulation, equating emotion with weakness etc. she's never told her nurses how she feels about them because that's something her father would never do, but as soon as she lets go that need for approval she realises that her father's way isn't necessarily the right way and she can tell her nurses how proud she is of them.
"Grace Ryland is Rocky's dog" is such a funny fucking dynamic when you think about it
Eridians are further behind than humans technologically right? They dont have computers, relativity, quantum mechanics, etc. In fact, Eridians probably dont even know about the Big Bang because their atmosphere would filter out most of the cosmic microwave background radiation we use to detect it. On a human timeline, theyre anywhere between like early-mid 20th century. Rocky's basically a cosmonaut.
So the human civilization is pretty advanced from Rocky's perspective. Rationally he understands this. On a conceptual level he knows this to be true.
But at the same time... imagine youre one of the first ever cosmonauts to make it into space. Then you meet a 10 year old alien dog who cant do 2+2 without pulling out its calculator. It forgets everything constantly and has to keep notes everywhere, like it basically lives in Memento (2000). Also if it doesnt nap constantly it gets even stupider. And you somehow has to reconcile this with the fact that this dog has a better understanding of physics than your entire civilization does. Like the dog knows how the universe started.
In retrospect, it's hilarious that Stratt made everybody on the vat speak English in deference to Grace being monolingual
Because with how quickly Grace was able to pick up Eridian, even with literally NOTHING about it being familiar the way a human language would be, they probably could have chosen Mandarin as the universal language on Stratt's Vat and he would have just. Learned it.
Everyone's so focused on Grace's primary hypothesis (life doesn't need water) remaining unsupported that you're ignoring his secondary hypothesis (the Goldilocks zone is for idiots) being proven correct
I think whenever Grace dies, his gravesite would always have a guard posted. So that for as long as he sleeps, there is someone watching him. I think there would be a very long waitlist to be the Eridian who gets to watch the site, but it is also not a task to be taken lightly. Not only are you tasked with watching Grace sleep, but one also has to keep the area clean, calm, and protected, and maybe be able to answer a few common questions about the hero. It's not quite a holy sight, but it also holds a certain amount of reverence.
When they learn about the program, the second humans to arrive on Erid take shifts watching Grace sleep. They are allowed to skip to the front of the queue. They find that, surprisingly, it isn't a large memorial or anything monumental; they had seen the large statues of Grace and Rocky across two worlds. But this one is small, intimate, a hollow chamber with a few places to sit scattered throughout. It is not a traditional gravesite; instead, it has the layout of an Eridian-style classroom.
ILL HEAR NO ILL OF THESE BOOTS. These pointy ass heeled boots that everyone looks fabulous in.
i love loooooooove the idea of people's reactions to the beetles getting back to earth. just imagine:
teenagers citing his videos and data as primary sources on their school projects (how do you make an mla citation for a home video filmed in space?)
grace's final goodbye to earth getting billions of views on youtube
sexy edits of grace ALL OVER tiktok and instagram
grace becomes a whole scientific field unto himself. teams of scientists dedicate their lives to the study of his research and his contributions. maybe some of those scientists were his students once upon a time.
grace x rocky ALL OVER ao3
books on eridian language and culture hit the shelves and sell out immediately
eridian culture reignites conversations about the construct of gender, eridians become nonbinary/agender symbols
space is suddenly back at the forefront of the public mind. space-travel units are introduced to grade school science curriculum worldwide. entire classes are taught solely on grace and his scientific discoveries. EVERYONE wants to be an astronaut
of course, hollywood makes a big-budget Dr. Ryland Grace biopic. it's a box office hit. a huge online movement results in ryan gosling playing grace, and everyone agrees the likeness is uncanny. stratt is the villain of the story.
a series of heartfelt videos from grace to stratt, in which he says hello and goodbye and i hate you and thank you and i miss you, are found in the database and reposted online. there's suddenly a massive outcry of support for her, which results in her release from prison. some youtuber makes a gritty but surprisingly touching short film about her story
people coming together to make earth better. trying to repair the damages from the sun's dimming, trying to repair the environment, trying to repair global relations. they want to be an earth worth saving, an earth that grace would be proud of
space travel becomes a huge global priority, the nations of the world pool resources and there are huge advances in technology (especially with scientists studying xenonite!)
the project hail mary launch date becomes a huge global holiday. there's a parade in almost every city all over the world in honor of the hail mary. people lay candles and flowers at memorials for yao, ilyukhina, annie, and dubois. murals of grace and rocky cover building sides. people gather in the streets and remember those who saved them, and banners that read "grace rocky save stars" flutter in the wind above the crowds.
coca cola airs a VERY insensitive commercial with some low quality eridian puppets. the commercial is slammed online and company stocks plummet
people continue to live their lives as normal. because of grace and rocky, because of the beetles, the sun is saved. earth keeps spinning.
Shane getting criticized for not using pride tape and heâs caught on a mic later that week saying I didnât realize it wasnât the sucking dick that made me gay but the rainbow . Which is how he comes out.
sorry but i do like and enjoy when shane is a kind of bad captain and bad friend and partially reaps what he sowed with the metros as a result of years and years of a willfully blind eye and a locker room culture he enabled and i have seen the opinion that the metros team loves shane and thatâs an interpretation i can understand but donât myself hold because what i see is not the team loving shane but sucking up to shane and shane not totally having the social skills to recognize that while this group of guys seems really friendly and nice to him it isnât actually motivated by friendship which is why the pivot takes him by such surprise
I think a lot about Trapper sedating Hawkeye in Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde and how it seems like such an unkind thing to do to someone you care for but, when it comes down to it, Trapper is giving Hawkeye the only solution he can think of to keep him from being carted off to a mental hospital. Hawkeye's manic episode here is eerily similar to the one we hear about later in GFA. He's not sleeping, he's taking delusional steps to try to protect his patients or end the war, and ultimately he gets in a vehicle and does something reckless. We know the end result of that in GFA. Hawkeye goes to the mental hospital. And god knows there was nothing there that could have solved that. At some point, Hawkeye is going to have to confront what happened on the bus.
But in Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde, the thing that's driving Hawkeye's mania - at least from Trapper's point of view, uneducated in psychiatry as he is - is his lack of sleep. And Trapper's a doctor; he knows what mental hospitals are like, and these are 1950s mental hospitals. A general's coming to camp. He cannot let a general see Hawkeye like this, because Hawkeye will be sent to the mental hospital.
So he sedates him. And it's unkind, and when Hawkeye wakes up he's gonna have to explain what he did, but they both know the consequences if he didn't. It was the best option Trapper could give him. It was the only option Trapper could give him that he thought would keep him from wandering off into the minefield, or going AWOL and getting lost while horrifically sleep deprived, or being sent to the mental hospital. And I think, ultimately, they both understand that even though it's a solution that is painful for Hawkeye, it was the only one Trapper could think of to keep him safe.
Rocky and Grace probably have so much blackmail they could use on each other if they wanted to. like they spent years isolated together on the trip to Erid theyâve no doubt seen each other at their weirdest
Rocky pisses Grace off one day so while theyâre in the company of friends he randomly blurts out âdid you know Rocky was naked for the entire trip home? I didnât even know you guys wore clothes until we were in orbitâ
first observation of my hunger games reread is that katniss is so prickly right off the bat and itâs so epicâŠ.. literally page 2 she saying she hates her sisterâs cat and tried to drown it once. sheâs throwing the cookies peetaâs dad gave her out the train window. sheâs resolving not to even look at peeta. all of these behaviors have her own personal logic and reasoning behind them, but even without her internal dialogue it would make complete sense to the reader why katniss would act this way. sheâs starved her entire life and is essentially the sole provider for her family from age 11 and lives under the constant threat of being killed just for hunting her own food (which again she needs to provide for her mom and sister) so sheâs in constant survival mode. of course sheâs not like bubbly and happy and lights up a room the way i fear several other YA teenage girl protags were described WHICH is interesting because they were also in dire situations. you really canât have it both waysâŠ..putting your main character through literal hell to set them up to be a hero while also keeping their spirits consistently high and having them devote a large portion of their attention to romance just doesnât work. @ cassandra clare.
like misha collins in season 4 was making too much eye contact or not enough eye contact, wasnât blinking and stood too close to the person he was shooting the scene with (which happened to be jensen ackles for most of the early episodes) because he was trying to portray an ancient cosmic entity the size of the chrysler building who is beyond human comprehension and possessing a human body for presumably the first time. it wasnât meant to be gay necessarily, it was supposed to be a creature not quite grasping the subtleties of human interaction and it read as gay because thatâs what happens when you stand so close you can track pupil dilation. jensen ackles, however, responded to this acting choice by nervously licking his lips and staring at his coworkerâs mouth and swallowing a lot and there is no excuse for this because both he and dean winchester are human beings who know what a boner is. no excuse.
everyone on this post who is like hashtag heller queen jackles this is proof of the jackles longcon has fundamentally misunderstood me. the point is that misha collins was the only one making conscious acting decisions here. jensen was, at best, being puppeteered by a repressed bisexual ghost named dean. at worst he was extremely bad at acting intimidated and just came across as uncomfortably horny the entire time. either way the end result is the same
iâm just saying aragorn son of arathorn oh im sorry STRIDER (one of them rangers what his right name is i never heard etc etc) didnât need to be that sexy at the prancing pony. like ostensibly heâs trying to lay low but even dipshit little [relatively] eighteen y/o frodo is like hey whatâs the deal with that extremely ostentatiously sexy man in the corner
âyou draw far too much attention to yourself âmister underhillââ if i were frodo i wouldve snapped. jesus christ. i canât help that iâm two feet shorter than everyone else in this definitely definitely 100% a gay bar but at least i didnât lurk in a sexy corner making eyes at everybody from under my cloak at least im TRYING to pretend iâm not a protagonist you fine ass idiot. i KNOW iâm being pursued by the black riders which is why i didnât SERVE CUNT from the SHADOWS. the fellowship of the nerve of this bitch
The tragedy of Marinette Dupain Cheng is that being ladybug is extremely bad for her precisely because sheâs so good at it
Miraculous Ladybug is about what if you gave a girl with extreme anxiety the superhuman capability to actually prepare for every scenario of What Could Go Wrong
