the death of Dr Jane Goodall is making me really emotional. she was one of the first women in stem i learned about as a little girl. she was proof that women could do the dirty work and excel at it--women could literally be in the wild, in the dirt, climbing trees, and surviving on their own, Goodall was proof. i remember learning about her. i remember seeing even my male classmates admire her, and that being a big deal to me.

i remember learning not only that she was a woman in science, but that she was better than the male scientists in her niche. that was insane to learn! it felt like most female scientists i learned about were talented, but always outshone by their male counterparts. they were important because they were women in that field, but people always insisted that the men were still better. But not Dr Goodall. she revolutionized science. she was a genius. the best in her field of work.

Rest in peace, Dr Jane Goodall. you will continue to be beloved and to be a trailblazer and hero for women and girls everywhere

here on radblr when we say “i peaked”, we’re usually talking about peak trans; but what about other peaks? i’ll go first

i peaked porn and violent sex thanks to a random woman on tiktok. she made this video with simply her on the background and a text saying “why would your partner want to hurt you?” or something along the line. i was 20/21. i was 11/12 the first time i was introduced to porn. it was one of the harshest realisations of my life, the sense of betrayal was and still is insanely strong, like men took my girlhood from me. i cried many tears of both sadness and rage

that was my true feminist awakening, the biggest peak of my life. that moment changed the trajectory of my life, the path i took from then on was full of women talking about feminist issues without actually calling them feminist issues. now i’m here, still walking that path aware of what it’s called - feminism - and reading the theory our foremothers made for us

I peaked institutional support for male violence in March 2021. The UK was in a COVID-19 lockdown, and a woman called Sarah Everard was walking home from a friend’s house. An off duty serving police officer accused her of breaking lockdown restrictions and used his warrant card to get her into his car. He kidnapped her, raped her, strangled her to death, dismembered her, burned the pieces, and put her remains in a pond in some woodland.

It felt like London was holding its breath while she was missing. The perpetrator was arrested a few days later. When news broke that he was a police officer there was uproar.

A vigil was organised in a park near where she had been kidnapped. This vigil would have been in breach of lockdown restrictions. The organisers were instructed, by the police, to cancel it. By the police. When women attended anyway, male police officers - like the one who had committed this crime - broke up the crowd with violence, arrested multiple women with violence, and even stamped on the flowers women had left in her memory. The police added insult and injury to violent death.

A further institution conducted a review of the behaviour shown and described it as ‘appropriate’ and ‘justified’.

Under patriarchy, institutions are patriarchal. Institutions will protect the status quo. Under patriarchy, the status quo is male violence. Institutions will protect male violence.

My peak on the abortion debate was courtesy of a woman on Mumsnet feminism board a while ago. She was part of a discussion around the death of Savita Halappanavar and the repeal the eighth campaign, and started challenging women on why they supported a 24 week limit. She was the first person I saw using the words forced birth and encouraged us to flip the script and stop using religious fundamentalist language or let them set the terms of the debate.

Now I approach discussions around abortion from the premise of at what point should women be forced to give birth against their will, when should they be forced crying and begging to go through with an unwanted pregnancy, when should they be locked up for the crime of not wanting a child, what policies and support do you also campaign for if you want these unwanted children to be born. Most non religious people get very thoughtful when you stop using the ‘pro life’ terminology
