I love this blog so much for basically being an enormous library of interior background references but MAN. There is something Vile and Poetic about that saying being painted on the wall of one of the bleakest-looking school hallways I've seen in a long time. It's like that poem about the stars being painted over in landlord white. Incredible.

I also like the framing because it makes you feel as if you are backed into a corner, and though multiple subconscious signs are trying to force your attention back to accept the main mantra (green coloring equals good contrasting that exit sign, huge lettering, tile on the floor forming a triangle as if an arrow pointing you directly towards it). You tried for so long to take in that message directly, but now you’re trying hard to sideline that message, weighing options, not hiding bias. Black doors giving a tease, letting light from the other side bleed through, that red exit sign glowing painfully red hot above. Right in front of you. That’s all you want to see now. It’s right in front of you.

i’m re-reading animorphs, a series i loved when i was a closeted young child, as a queer adult and feeling a little insane over it actually. like ok so. imagine you are just a normal regular kid until one day, a chance encounter with an adult unlike any adult you've ever met before abruptly changes who you are as a person, and suddenly you are not like other kids at all. and now you have to fight a secret battle for survival, but you cannot tell anyone around you about it, because many of the people around you harbor a secret violent hatred for who you are, and if you tell someone without realizing the person you're talking to is one of the people who hates you, that person will either put you through horrific harm to make you like them or just outright kill you. this is true of every single person around you—your parents, your siblings, your friends, your teachers—except for a few other kids who you know share your same secret.

and now you have to try to maintain close relationships with the people you love even though you cannot tell them who you really are, who you spend your time with, who you go to when you're not with them. when you see your secret companions in public, you have to try to pretend you barely know them, because being seen together too often could lead to suspicion. you are enduring consistent ongoing trauma that you cannot talk to anyone about because anyone whose job is to help people through trauma may also be one of the people who wants to kill you. also you're a shapeshifter. like yeah ok i wonder why so many people who were obsessed with animorphs as a kid turned out to be queer

some quick facts:

they're nocturnal and tend to roam around while awake.

their fur is short, dense, and oily to waterproof them.

they prefer a diet of mostly meat and are attracted to strong-smelling food like fish, cheese, and anything fermented.

the elongated dewclaw on each front paw is sharp, flexible, and nonretractable. it injects a venom that causes respiratory failure and cardiac arrest in prey and, in extreme doses, humans. veterenarians typically remove the dewclaw venom glands during the neuter/spay procedure.

they grow to an average of 1m and 23kg (3ft and 50lb) but can reach up to double that length and triple the weight!

both! they have functional gills AND lungs. while on land, their operculum presses their gills completely flat to prevent them from drying out, aided by a protective coat of mucus. when they swim, their trachea seals off their lungs so they don't aspirate water, and the held air functions as a swim bladder to make them more buoyant. they also take periodic gulps of air at the surface to supplement their gills.

This is completely ignoring the fact that the sheep's soul is stored in its wool. So sure, the body remains, but the spirit, the essence of the sheep, that's gone forever, and then as the wool regrows a new soul moves in.
