I’ve not looked up DC stuff in years and only just found out about the existence of Duke Thomas and Cassandra Cain. Why was I not informed of the existence of these pure chaotic beans. I knew the batfam was chaotic but that was when I thought there were only four (4) bat kids not I find out that there’s six not including his unofficial kids and the various other bird and bat themed Gothum heroes which keep poping up. Seriously who the fuck is Harper? Cullins too? Helena? Terry? Roy? Where are they all coming from-

I’d love to know more about Duke I know very little of his backstory other than his parents were jokerized. Most descriptions I’ve heard of him describe him as the sane one but lets be real he’s one of the bats how sane can he possibly be

ah, sane one trope; the surefire way to know that the person writing him that way doesn’t know or understand the character of Duke and probably don’t know how black people…exist if we’re being real. it’s usually, at least partially, because they don’t know how to write a black character without centering their personality around a white counterpart that they can “relate to”. but the trope largely stems from this one scene from the I Am Bane story arc, where Bruce (in the middle of a bitter conflict with Bane) took Duke and the mini Bruces (Jamal Jason, Dick, and Damian) to McDonalds and told the batboys to leave Gotham for their own safety. the other Batboys decide instead to fight Bane themselves. Duke, a rookie, opted to not fight the crazy supervillain that broke and scarred Batman and….

it didn’t go so well for the Batboys. Duke is sensible but he’s not timid or risk-averse, nor has he ever been an awkward straight-man spectacular for those round him. he’s a leader first and foremost. unfortunately the scene is pretty popular because it’s a slice of life batfamily scene, and since Duke doesn’t get as much page time as the others, we get people who base their perception of Duke off that one scene as opposed to finding and reading things that focus on him to get a better understanding.

@peppersonironi did a solid post dispelling the notion that he’s just “the sane one” [link]

it’s also a good way to get a feel of some of his origins and where he’s been.

I also have a post doing an overview of his powers. [link] yes he has powers, he’s the first metahuman to get inducted into the batfam; just to flex on these hoes a little extra. his powers and the mystery/mythology surrounding them are a pretty significant plot point for his character that (for whatever reason) DC hasn’t fully dug in with and explored. but that’s like advanced Duke Thomas theory 🤣 you ain’t there yet
