File this under âsuper obvious yet I always seem to forget it.â
I donât write romance (I totally respect people who do, though!) but this is also great writing advice in general! What is preventing the protagonist from achieving their goal?
Why canât these two people be together now?
Why canât the mystery be solved now?
Why canât they overthrow the evil overlord now?
If you donât have a solid answer for these questions, thatâs a good indicator that the plot could use some more work.
Also test your answer a little bit. If itâs as thin as theyâre just refusing to sit down and have a simple conversation, you might want to re-think how things are going.
As a beta reader/editor, I tend to ask this question a lot:Â âWhy are they doing it this way when thereâs a much easier path available?â Thatâs not to say that they should take the easier path, because that would usually be boring. Instead, the point is that the question needs an answerâeither eliminate the easier path or give them a very clear reason for not taking it. (And if Iâm asking the question, that reason isnât as clear as you think it might be.)
I find it very difficult to root for characters who have a sensible option available and just donât take it. If the only reason is âBecause there wouldnât be a story otherwise,â you havenât actually found the story yet.
And this is why the Big Misunderstanding as a primary plot device is almost universally disliked.
Whereas ancient feuds between groups that culminates to having to undergo something extremely difficult to be able to fit in with society (hoop jumping for ableism or racism) because the powers that be have definite limitations on what they can or canât do (this list will be at the bottom) and there were (and still are) examples of bad eggs within the marginalized groups making it harder to fit in.
As for the list of the Danifrore gods, and their limits, here it is.
Timoteo (Master of Time): Can look into the future, stop all time, freeze someone in time indefinitely. Cannot go back in time. Doing so would cause a temporal paradox, ripping time asunder and killing himself.
Staci (Sovereign of Space): Can create interdimensional or local portals anywhere in the universe, is aware of everyone in the universe and where they are, and can teleport. Cannot
Reala (Ruler of Reality): Shapeshifts, they are the only them in the multiverse, can pop between realities, can create anything that exists in the reality they are in, can create dimensional bubbles between realities. Cannot cross interuniversal tech or create another Reala. Every reality will collapse if not corrected. Has a very low chance of procreation that will not result in an unstable child who will destroy their reality.
Mind: Telepath, telekinetic, able to use mind control, living library. Cannot
Paul (Paragon of Power): Can manipulate any form of energy, powers the entire Danifrore realm. Cannot lose control of the power or he will destroy their world.
Soulena (Mother of Souls): Can rip the soul from a being, destroy Soulless beings with a touch, bestows souls on the children born in the sacred Soul Pool. Cannot give a soul to one who is Soulless beyond one hour of birth.
@silvertryingtowrite Please let me know if this is right and what I missed!
Staci cannot be everywhere at once and whrn doing a task she remains focused on that one thing while ignoring the rest so she cam complete it.
Mind ( otherwise known as Matthew which he chooses later one) Cannot control know things not discovered by any living being which includes other alien species and humans. He also cannot force others to learn all he knows though mental livk or risk detroying there mind
Soulena can also consume souls that will increase her powers such as soul fire but in doing so it will tourture the souls she consumed
