Bad news: your body feels like shit
Good news: it isn’t as bad as it was during that one week back in December
Support disabled people as they become more public with their disabilities.
You dont understand how hard it is for us to be open, how dangerous it can make social interaction or how quickly it can ruin our careers and put our lives at risk.
Support disabled people who are finally being open about their illness. Support disabled people who no longer hide their symptoms. Who take their meds in public, who use their mobility aids, who are talking about their illness in public.
We need to be there, we need to support them, we need to accept them and fight for them.
I make jokes about my medical issues because it’s easier than facing the fact that I’ll be living in severe pain the rest of my life.
me, explaining my mental issues: and then there’s the Executive Dysfunction-
someone: what does that mean?
me: it means my frontal lobe has the competence of the United States Congress
if i got to ask a genie for a wish i wouldn’t just ask for money i would specifically ask for all of jeff bezos’ money and then use all his money to do all the things people keep saying jeff bezos could do with his money
pros of this plan:
the genie won’t be conjuring up large sums of money for me, thus inflating the economy by flooding it and lowering the value of the dollar
i could make it part of the deal that the money is transferred to me legally, so it doesn’t just look like i suspiciously came into a lot of money
i looked up the amount it’s $135 billion like yeah that would look suspicious if i just took that money from jeff bezos
contrary to popular opinion i would leave jeff bezos with enough money to support himself and his family, perhaps even thrive, such as $100 000 a year. that way capitalists won’t make him into a martyr and he has nothing to complain about
i distribute a lot of the wealth instinctively to charities that make a difference globally, because Fuck national borders
i leave $100 tips at every restaurant i go to
i will not spend the money on ridiculous things like extra houses or yachts or sports cars because i am a reasonable human being who understands that literally none of that matters
i’ll use my second genie wish to make sure amazon hires a new ceo that is charitable and generous and also believes in human rights
and then i’ll use my third wish to free the genie. i’ve seen aladdin duh
cons of this plan:
i do not know any genies
I Stood Up and Immediately Regretted It: a Memoir
I make jokes about my medical issues because it’s easier than facing the fact that I’ll be living in severe pain the rest of my life.
if you have hearing loss & ask me to repeat something & I say ‘nevermind’ I promise it’s not cause I’m a jerk treating you like an inconvenience, it’s cause I realized what i said was fucking stupid
Okay but like, please repeat it anyway, and then add that you realize it’s stupid? Or at least say “I’ve realized it was stupid, so I’d like not to repeat it”. Please don’t just say “nevermind”.
Yes PLEASE do this. I’m hard of hearing and when someone says “nevermind” it always feels like they’re actually saying “ugh your hearing loss is such a pain in the ass, it’s not worth the damn effort” even if that isnt the truth. I don’t care how dumb it is, the clarification makes me feel so much better.
this is really important feedback, thank you! From now on I will make certain to either repeat myself or explain respectfully why I prefer not. You deserve to feel comfortable and respected in all conversations. My insecurities and self-consciousness is a issue, but it’s my issue to deal with.
i just saw a fb post where a man was arguing with a woman about the best way to make macarons and he kept insisting that she was wrong, and then eventually he was like “I’ve never personally made macarons, but if you think about it what I’m saying makes sense, i’m simply stating the obvious. i’m sure there are plenty of youtube tutorials that would show you the same thing.” and the woman replied by linking him to her instagram business page and she makes fuckin macaron towers for parties for a living and i’ve been laughing about it for a solid 5 minutes.
Men automatically assume they’re more of an expert on something than any woman on account of their dicks. I’ve never met such an ignorant and narcissistic creature as a male
I’ll never forget a time when a fb friend of mine posted that she’s on her way to hospital to give birth. Women commented with “good luck” and other encouraging messages. A man’s comment was advice on how to give birth.
You have got to be kidding me
So I was talking about Jekyll & Hyde (the book) at a writer’s museum while we were looking at an Robert Louis Stevenson exhibit. I was giving my take on Jekyll, and my brother tried to counter it. I countered back easily, and then he said “well I’ve never read the book”
My dude………..stop
my ex, whose baking experience was pretty much limited to frying premade biscuit dough in boy scouts to make ‘donuts’, would constantly try to correct me or give me advice on baking
i’m a fucking pastry chef
met a dude at a party who was talking about physics and asked if i’d ever listened to any online physics lectures bc he listened to all of this one series and they were so helpful and maybe i could learn some physics too
i have a degree in physics
and am a published coauthor in astrophysics
the best part is that the woman who invented the term ‘mansplaining’ (her name is Rebecca Solnit and i highly recommend her collection of essays) came up with it when she was at a party one night and a man tried to explain a book to her, and wouldn’t let her speak long enough for her to tell him that
she wrote the bloody book he was mansplaining to her
You know I have plenty examples of this but that last one takes the cake so imma just let it be.
I really appreciate people who can just be normal about a chronic illness. Not overly-intrusive, not weirdly-avoidant, just normal. Since coming back to school I’ve told my close friends about my POTS diagnosis and one of them has made things so much easier just by acting like a normal human being about it.
Like for example, the other day she noticed I was wearing compression socks and commented on them because I’ve never worn high socks before. When I explained why I had them I was ready for it to become awkward–because when these things come up people so often give that weird “ohhhhh” response before trying to change the subject. But she just casually asked if I was supposed to wear them all the time now, and all of a sudden we were in a normal conversation about it and after a minute we moved on to discussing other things. And that was so refreshing. It wasn’t clinical, I didn’t feel uncomfortable, she didn’t seem to feel uncomfortable. We were just talking about something that’s a part of my life now.
And the other day, when I was visibly unwell while she and I were waiting to go to dinner, she jokingly said it was time to “get you some salt” before taking the elevator with me. Her knowing that eating something salty would help was really cool, because it meant she’d actually listened when we discussed why my diet has suddenly become 90% sodium. It also made me really happy because she’d made a friendly joke instead of treating me like an invalid.
I don’t know where I’m trying to go with this. I was just reflecting tonight on how important is to have someone who doesn’t treat my diagnosis as something bizarre or embarrassing or infantilizing. It makes getting through bad days a lot easier and I also feel safer knowing that there’s someone who, though they don’t treat me any differently, is consciously aware that there has been a significant change in my health.
“Trick or Yeet!” I shout to the children when I open the door. “Yeet?” one says confusidly. I shrug. “Yeet it is.” I throw the child.
Not Halloween but, okay.
okay you stick of unsalted butter i made this on halloween but everyone just likes to reblog it for some reason
I don’t think parents realize exactly how much their relationship dynamics affects the future relationships of their children
Now that I’m grown l can say with absolute certainty that the effects of growing up watching 2 people in a dysfunctional relationship have seeped into multiple facets of my life
And that’s the thing about growing up. You don’t even realize how traumatized you are from seeing all that until you’re an adult and then one night you dare to be a little introspective, then suddenly you’re connecting dots and unpacking all this baggage you didn’t know you were carrying on your back this whole time. And you have to unpack it. You have to. Because if you don’t, the cycle continues
