Piper is clingy, even before her and Nora started dating. She would be attached to her hip, whether that be when Nora is out questing, just hanging around Sanctuary or doing absolutely anything else. Wherever Nora is, Piper is.
Piper is always talking, somehow she always has something to say. Nora always listens. As Piper rambles on, Nora listens attentively, nodding along as she spouts her newest conspiracy theory about Mayor McDonough.
Whenever they aren't together, Piper gets antsy. She paces around, trying to find things to distract herself. Whether that be writing an article, cleaning her office or interrogating people. Everyone knows whenever Piper is anxious, it means Nora's gone somewhere.
Nora can't sleep without Piper around. After losing someone so close to her already, she's become hyper vigilant. Whenever Piper isn't around, Nora tosses and turns in her sleep, and that's if she even falls asleep. Whenever she has Piper, she holds her close, spooning her so tightly.
Whenever they have quiet moments together, Nora likes to play with Piper's hair. Wrapping it around her fingers and gently braiding it. It soothes Nora, seeing how comfortable and comfy Piper gets.
During Nora's first radstorms, before they were together, Piper would sleep in the same bed as her. She would lay at her side, careful as to not get too close to the broken woman, but close enough to protect her.
Nora mends Piper's clothes. Pre-war, Nora was an excellent seamstress, a hobby she picked up on maternity leave. The flayed ends of Piper's classic red jacket was quickly fixed when she took it off for the first time around Nora. Not to mention it's helpful when stitching up wounds. (An incredibly intimate act which leads to many many suggestive eye glances).
Despite Piper's talkative nature, mornings are quiet. Gentle kisses peppering Piper's bare back, sips of fresh coffee from Codsworth and the soft feeling of blankets.
Piper often wakes up early, before Nora. She likes to watch her breathe as the sunlight hits her chest, watching it rise and fall. Quietly watching is something she likes to do, something that Nora doesn't notice.
Kisses between them are passionate. Piper holds Nora close, cradling her head, feeling the heat of her body pressed against her. Small little pecks happen often, in between fights with raiders, ducking behind cover. Sometimes Nora gets cocky and kisses her behind her ear as Piper takes aim, causing her to lose focus.
A word to the wise that Danse's section is on the grimmer side and is my musings on the nature of Cutler's death. Or murder.
Cait
She's not got dainty hands. Her hands are rough and she has a bit of eczema on her knuckles. Curie badgers her endlessly to use creams to hydrate her skin and Cait responds with all the enthusiasm of someone getting hit with two unskippable ads.
Used to have her ears pierced but it was done rudimentary and also being a fighter it didn't stay neat. One of her earlobes is torn and the other is nicked off. She doesn't notice it until she is off chems and can't remember when exactly it happened.
Codsworth
He was the only Mr Handy in Sanctuary. It was very lonely. Not that he minds. In the early days it was somewhat a distant concern in the face of all the cleaning he needs to do. Broken glass gets everywhere.
He did nose around the other houses in sanctuary in the early days of the fallout. He isn't one to brag but he's certain Sole's house was the best. The others. Mm
Curie
She finds molerats cute but visibly recoils if someone offers her a docile one to hold. She loves them, truly, but to touch them isn't on her cards. She rather they are free.
She celebrates every holiday. She used to in the vault. She would sing happy birthday to herself every year she spent alone like the Mars rover. It's a habit that has stuck.
Danse
His power armour was originally Cutler's. He lost his set storming in to find Cutler. When he did find Cutler: well. All that the Brotherhood knight could admit was left of his Cutler was the power armour Cutler had been taken from.
I don't know if Danse and Cutler were romantic or platonic. If they were romantic I don't think it was in a way that Danse ever admitted as such. It was him and Cutler against the world and they loved eachother truly. Platonic or romantic. Before the Brotherhood they saved up together to get a safe place to rest in Rivet city. In their initiate days if one of them was being disciplined then you could be damn sure the other was too. In the mess each always held the seat by them for the other. As knights they would do checks of eachother's Bunks before inspection to make sure the other didn't get caught out by Krieg. As best friends or as lovers they were never apart.
Cutler is now dead and Danse killed him.
Danse wears Cutler's armour.
Deacon
Can tell who is approaching by the sound of their footsteps. Or their breathing. His hearing is freakishly good.
Equally: he can perfectly mimick and steal someone's gait and breathing pattern. He does it occasionally to test Glory.
Dogmeat
He sleeps on a different companion every night. Not their bed. Them.
Can not hold an egg safely in h his mouth. He will eat it. What did you expect.
Hancock
He once had a trip that lasted a week where he fixed the plumbing in the Third Rail. No one knows how.
Very prone to ear aches. He's not deaf, his jaw is just prone to grinding and that isn't good on his joints.
MacCready
Likes being squeezed in hugs. Even if he groans and jabs at Sole with his pointy elbows. It reminds him of Little Lamplight when some of the kids would huddle up together when sleeping to feel less scared. That or he yearns for the hydraulic press.
Has always wanted a dog. He cracks a small smile whenever Dogmeat comes to sit with him. He wants to get a dog so Duncan can grow up with dogs like MacCready himself did.
Nick Valentine
He keeps a pair of old glasses to hand for when he's reading documents. He doesn't need them. He doesn't even use them all the time. But he likes to do it when he is bickering with Ellie purely because he can. She calls him dramatic.
The original Nick had a acute sense of smell. He can still smell things as a synth, but in the early days the difference really messed with him.
Piper
Nat doesn't remember her mum or father beyond the stories Piper regales her with and that haunts Piper. Nat knows what Piper says is true when it comes to their parents. But it is only true as Piper remembers it. And Nat only knows the comforting truths. It haunts Piper.
Piper talks in her sleep in full sentences. You can have a conversation with her and it goes to nonsense so quickly. Think you are being interrogated by the mad hatter who is drinking hot chocolate instead of tea.
Preston Garvey
Despite collecting recipes for a cookbook: he eats like a uni student. It's coffee and whatever he can cobble together if Sturges isn't cooking.
He's not very good with a gun. He's good enough but he never stood out for his skills with it. What defines Preston in the Minutemen is how he takes care of and organises people. Not how efficiently he kills them.
Strong
Lactose intolerant.
I honestly don't know much about Strong beyond the sheer amount of Sass he gives me whenever I exist in the vicinity of a work bench. I think he is jealous because he will never know the joys of B&Q.
Me making him lactose intolerant despite him seeking the milk of human kindness is in no way me being petty whatsoever.
X6-88
The institute has attempted to clone him a few times to see if they can recreate his level of performance. They can't. It doesn't bother X6-88 to see synth after synth made in his image be terminated or repurpose. But it sits with him. He never actively recalls it but he can never forget it.
Would not be able to put a boba straw through a boba tea lid. He smashes it or bends the straw every time.
This started off as a fun little exercise but I think I'll make it daily. It's helping me to learn more about the characters.
This one is going to be sweet I think.
Cait
Codsworth
Cait likes to hold her partner tight when she's sleeping. Like vice tight. Like it is best Sole sleeps tactically or they will not be able to go for a midnight walk.
Post Benign intervention she sleeps like the dead. Snores unlike the dead too because she defaults to sleeping with her neck in a weird position.
Curie
Codsworth still remembers the first few nights after Master Shaun came home. He would occasionally play back the recording of that day to himself when he was lonely.
He never did venture beyond Sanctuary before Sole's return. But thankfully the Mr. Handys have a local radio to communicate with eachother. Why General Atomics kept it so all Mr Handys could read and write from a proprietary frequency without telling the consumers? Because they could.
Curie is very good with kids when it comes to medical care. Not that she distracts them from it. She will often sit with the child and explain what is going to happen and how it will help them. She treats the people she cares of like people.
When dealing with child patients: she has a few sheets of stickers to reward them with that Piper gave her.
Danse
Danse sleeps better when he's not the one leading the unit. Better as in he will actually humour going to bed even if sleep still takes time. He sleeps in his boxers if he's in his own room.
Danse doesn't snore. He will occasionally grimace or startle awake, but other than that? Dead silent.
Deacon
Dogmeat
He never forgets a birthday. He once went to track down the original Nick Valentine's birthday but thought better of it. That Synth Nick is his own man. Deacon then elected to celebrate Nick's birthday as July 24th. Private investigators day.
Deacon takes pajamas dead seriously. Dress for the job you want. The job he wants? President of Well Rested Ville. He has a pair of slippers under his bed at the Railroad HQ.
Hancock
Dogmeat also responds to Catvegetable. Or John. Or really anything you say in a certain tone of voice in his direction.
He loves Travis from Diamond city. Travis is slightly more hesitant but loves Dogmeat too.
MacCready
He sleeps very light. He could be sleeping upstairs and Sole quietly calling for him will wake him.
Hancock sleeps better under weighted blankets but most of them are far too hot for him. He likes to be compressed when he falls asleep.
Nick Valentine
His ears get very cold very easily. Duncan made him a pair of ear muffs that he does still have but rarely wears because they get in the way of his cap.
On that note: MacCready has bet sensitive eyes. He grew up under a rock. It was mostly dark for the first sixteen years of his life. A flashbang would have him falling down the stairs and yelling.
Piper
Nick rarely joins game night when it's poker because no one can truly read his expression. No one can tell if he's proud of his poker face or if it troubles him that he doesn't have the facial expression nuances of a person.
The fastest typer out of all the companions. His words per minute go CRAZY. Assuming he's been taking care of his hands that is.
Preston Garvey
Piper can mimic anyone's handwriting providing you've given her decent reference. She had to learn to do so in the immediate aftermath of her father's death to investigate.
She is banned from the dugout inn trivia night. They claim she's a cheater. She claims she's prepared.
Strong
Preston can swim rather well. He enjoys it a lot in the rare instances that the water is not radioactive or full of things looking to murder him.
When Danse is exiled from the Brotherhood: Preston is among the first to extend an olive branch. Whilst none of the companions are actively hostile to Danse, none of them give him a genuine opening as Preston does. Preston may be seen as naïve, and at times he is, but he stands by his belief that no one gets better unless they work together.
X6-88
Strong likes showing off his strength by lifting heavy things. In time he thinks to combine this with his search for the milk of human kindness in trying to put his strength to kindness. This rubble will be kindly cleared from the street (thrown onto an unsuspecting raider) so very kindly. This street is now walkable for the first time in two centuries.
He genuinely hates the sounds of power tools. They make his head ring.
X6-88 is one of the best coursers and being one of the best: he gets a big say on what the courser uniform should be like. Not to the point it is something he would claim to love (he is a synth and cannot love, he would like to remind you) but to the point that when the scientists wanted to make it white to make the Institute theme they listened when he stated it would be a terrible idea.
He genuinely has never had a proper meal in his life prior to Sole giving him one. It's been all Huel baby.
yeah guys the usual tws: 600ish words of straight grief, angst, trauma, and self loathing. Maybe we'll get lucky and have a fallout 5 companion who doesn't hate themselves <3
Thinking about Piper Wright being raised by a single dad trying his best.
Rarely raising his voice, favoring lessons to punishments. Never hesitating to comfort his daughters when they cried or tell them their emotions were unreasonable. Being patient when they struggled, praising them when they succeeded, helping them practice and teaching them humor and resilience when they failed. Always fostering their interests, encouraging them to pursue what they felt strongly about and to always seek out their own information instead of just believing what everyone told them to believe. Never parentifying Piper, doing his best to maintain her childhood even after the death of her mother, even when he was busy as the only income, even when she developed a mischievous streak that simultaneously entertained and frustrated him because what messes she got herself into but how she reminded him so much of her mother doing it.
Only for him to die and suddenly all that was ripped out from under Piper.
In his last moments, he thinks to himself that he failed. That Piper at barely 15 will be an orphan. Alone and responsible for herself and her tiny sister who’s not even old enough to comprehend loss. And there's nothing he can do about it. Piper, barely a teen, full of so much anger and grief she doesn't know what to do with, and she just wants to scream and scream and scream and she wants someone to comfort her like she comforts Nat, who gets to scream whenever she wants because its normal for a 5 year old to scream and cry.
But Piper is an adult now, and screaming won't get her what she needs. She needs the truth, so she reaches out to those who were raised beside her, those who watched her grow up, but her fathers dead and no one is listening anymore. No one believes her anymore, about her father, who did so much for not just her but the community they lived in.
It hurts and it makes that pain in her chest that’s settled in since the death of her father pulsate hot and angry. She turns that anger over and over inside of her until it’s a storm.
She does everything in her power to make them listen, to make them believe, because her father's death won't go unanswered, not after everything he's done for all of them, not after the man who was despite all that he himself suffered. But even when it's done, when they finally believe her, it's too late. She can't reconcile the community she was raised in with the strangers she looks at now, the ones who abandoned her when she needed them most.
So, she leaves behind the only life she's ever known for Diamond City and takes her baby sister with her in the hopes of finding, or making, somewhere that values truth and knowledge and loyalty. Somewhere her father would be proud of.
Piper does her best to raise Nat the way her father would, even if shes impatient and impulsive and has a quick temper- and suddenly Nat is the same age Piper was when they lost their father and shes nothing like him and everything like Piper and Piper has to face the fact that she did everything she could, did her absolute best, and still she fucking failed. She failed Nat, she failed herself, she failed their father.
