matt has said he wouldn't have picked up on the full extent of the ambiguously homosexual adolescent longing themes of his own work prior to.. what was it, operation avalanche era? i was listening to the webseries commentary earlier and it's funny how clearly you can tell this is all still too sublimated for them both to comment on directly even though it comes through screamingly clearly in every episode. also like how sometimes matt seems to be more inclined to frame the character version of himself in a heterosexual light while shooting, but somewhere in editing he whittles it all back. examples:

the original plan that they hire a stripper in the b-day being scrapped bc matt thought it would be funnier if jay hired matt's sister (and perhaps so matt the character wouldn't have to act interested)

that one behind the scenes/deleted scenes clip from peanuts where matt frames his reaction to jay getting flirted with as his character being jealous of jay for getting the girl as opposed to his character being jealous of the girl for getting jay, with the latter becoming the more obvious interpretation in editing/later shooting

the extremely flaccid dirties alternate endings where matt is saved by heterosexuality

he keeps trying these things on for size but for some reason can't get his characters expressing attraction to anyone other than jay/proxy jay to gel narratively with that he's trying to convey about these guys. do you think when he caught on to what he was doing it felt a little like getting to the bottom of a water slide only to realize that your swimsuit came off somewhere along the way
