It had turned into a very long night.
Sebastian had wanted a party to celebrate their birthdays, but something that her brother always forgot was really how much Anne hated parties. Parties were loud and crazy, and there was always something wrong that occurred when people got too excited or intoxicated.
The only thing Anne had looking forward to as they headed into the night was the cute redheaded Ravenclaw that could slip herself into Anne’s hand as naturally as if she was meant to be there.
Anne and Aurelia Keene had come out to each other a few weeks earlier. Before, Anne had been scared that her growing admiration and affection towards Aurelia meant that there was something fundamentally wrong with her. When their parents were alive, Anne’s mother had made it very clear that girls who liked girls romantically were wrong and unnatural, and it terrified Anne down to her soul just to think about how much of a disappointment she would be if her mother was still alive.
But then there was Aurelia. She was beautiful, kind, gentle, and everything that was right in the world. She was also confident, and she knew exactly what she wanted and how to get it. Aurelia had wanted Anne, and Anne had finally allowed herself to want Aurelia in return. Nothing about their new relationship felt wrong, rather everything was finally beginning to feel right.
There was a small problem: Anne had yet to tell Sebastian, and it was killing her.
Anne was not stupid. She knew that she would have to eventually tell her twin, but tonight at this party when she already felt anxious was not the time to do it.
Especially if it went wrong. If Sebastian was angry with her, if he was upset or felt betrayed or lied to, or if he felt the same way as their parents did towards those in Anne’s predicament, then Sebastian would never forgive her.
It had been a long night. The Three Broomsticks was loud and exciting. Their friends were all dancing and celebrating and having what looked to be one of the happiest times of their lives. Aurelia had finally coaxed Anne to go on the dance floor with her, and Anne had allowed herself to get dragged into the commotion despite her better judgement. Aurelia held her hand and twirled Anne, making her giggle as the upbeat music began to overtake her. Before she could help herself, Anne was dancing along and holding Aurelia’s hands firmly as they spun around each other laughing and enjoying themselves.
The longer they danced, the more Anne relaxed. She was no longer paying attention to those around her or paying any attention to what they may think of her or Aurelia. The bright eyes of Aurelia were enough to distract Anne from all of that pain and unimportant opinions.
In that moment, the only thing that mattered was her.
Before she could stop herself, Anne reached out and grabbed Aurelia’s waist, pushing her forward until Anne could lean down and gently place her lips on her girlfriends’.
It felt as if time stopped. Aurelia was so soft and so sweet, and she eagerly moved against Anne as her fingers found Anne’s shoulders. It made Anne’s heart swell knowing that Aurelia felt the exact same way about her and that she was unafraid to show just how much care and love she had for her.
Then it stopped. Anne felt herself being grabbed from behind and shoved away from Aurelia’s grip. She fell back, caught by an unsuspecting Ominis before she tried to steady herself. For a brief, terrifying moment, Anne was afraid it had been Sebastian who broke the moment.
It wasn’t. Instead, she was face to face with a very livid Everett Clopton as he stared daggers at her. “What are you doing?!”
Anne stood in shock, for once unable to form any words. The party felt like it had come to an abrupt halt. The music had halted, everyone stopped dancing, and now it felt like the entire world was watching.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing kissing her?” Everett yelled again.
“You’re about seconds away from having those glasses knocked off of you, Clopton.”
Anne had never seen Sebastian look so tall and intimidating before. He was taller than her and stronger, but Anne hadn’t really noticed it before. His chest was puffed, his hands were balled into fists, and every muscle in his arms seemed ready to go at a seconds notice. He looked down on Everett with dark dangerous eyes, and Anne couldn’t help but shiver in fear.
Everett had turned and was facing Sebastian. “You’re going to allow this? You’re going to allow your sister to fuck another girl?”
“I’d rather her fuck Keene than fuck you, that’s for damn sure.”
Everett scowled. “I can’t believe you. You’re a pureblood, Sallow. I thought that meant something to you. Besides, Aurelia is my date, and your sister overstepped her boundaries.”
From across the room, Anne saw Aurelia scrunch her face. He wasn’t her date, he had invited himself.
“Funny you should say that considering neither me nor Anne invited you in the first place,” Sebastian replied.
Everett stepped forward. “You want to kick me out?”
Sebastian’s face darkened. “Oh, you really don’t want to know what I want to do right now.”
The room was silent. Everyone stood still waiting to see who was going to make the first move. Before they could, the crowd parted and Sirona came to stand in between them. “Alright, boys, that is enough,” she said, speaking sternly to them. “It’s late, I think it’s about time the party wraps up, don’t you Mister Sallow?”
The two boys had not stopped glaring at each other. Eventually, Everett rolled his eyes, gave an irritated look to Aurelia, and stomped out of the pub.
Anne found her voice finally. “Sebastian–”
He turned towards her. “Let’s get something straight. I don’t care who you date or who you sleep with or who you fall in love with, as long as you are happy. So Everett and Solomon can go to hell. I’m not leaving your side. Ever.”
She froze again, but something finally clicked in Anne’s brain. She believed him.
Anne stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Sebastian’s torso. “Thank you.”
Sebastian embraced her. “Of course. You’re my family, Anne.”
After a moment, Anne let go and she grinned up at him. “So… you don’t care who I sleep with? Is that you giving your blessing?”
“Oh, just keep it out of the Undercroft, you horny cat,” Sebastian nudged.
Anne felt something soft brush up against her, and when she looked over she saw that Aurelia had wrapped herself around Anne’s arm. She turned and fully embraced Aurelia, and all of her nerves melted.
Yes, the party was now ruined. But everything was perfect.
