I feel as though what drives most rude / inconsiderate behavior I experience IRL on a day to day basis comes from a place of having this unearned and unnecessary sense of urgency in situations that aren't actually urgent. I think if more people became aware of this completely unnecessary sense of urgency in situations that actually aren't urgent, it might make co-existing and sharing public spaces with other people a lot easier and more tolerable.

That text post that's been making the rounds that goes something like "Omg you made it to the same red light as everyone else but faster and more dangerously and recklessly, should we call nascar? Do you want a medal?" summarizes exactly what I'm trying to talk about.

It's like when I have to change buses at one of the bigger and busier bus stops, and the people who get off the same bus as me shove and elbow past me to get off before me, and then shove and elbow past anyone even slightly in their way on the way to the bus they're switching to, only to end up on the same bus as all the people they shoved and elbowed, with several minutes to spare before it leaves and plenty of open seats left.

I think this unnecessary urgency a lot of people feel in their day to day lives drives a lot of bad behavior. I'm not saying I'm innocent of this (is anyone's?), I've felt it too in plenty of situations that didn't call for it, and regrettably was less kind than I should have been as a result. But I try to be aware of it, and always try to ask myself it it's really as urgent as my lizard brain is trying to tell me it is, and even if it was urgent, does that still justify unkind behavior?

Is shoving or elbowing another person aside going to make the difference between whether or not you make it to the bus before it pulls away? (hint: at least where I live, most of the time that's a no because the drivers usually won't leave if they see people from another bus heading towards their bus). Is shoving and elbowing people aside in a crowded grocery store going to make any real difference in how quickly you get your shopping done?

Does a few extra seconds of time actually justify cruel and unkind behavior towards people you perceive as slightly inconveniencing you?

A few more examples of this phenomenon:

- Waiting in line at the store and the person behind you creeps closer and closer to try to pressure you forward, and ends up violating your personal space and making you uncomfortable, because they think creeping closer and pressuring the person in line in front of them will somehow get them through the line faster (it won't)

- Going through a self-serve buffet, and the person behind you keeps creeping closer and closer to try to pressure you to serve your food faster and get a move on. All it achieves is that you can't scoop your soup without elbowing them, and that's somehow your fault

- Crossing a crosswalk when the car waiting for you to cross creeps closer and closer to you to try to intimidate you into crossing faster (because using a 2 ton metal machine to try to intimidate a fleshy little ape you could easily kill with said 2 ton metal machine isn't acting like a bully at all no sir-ee)

- Honestly a huge heap of the poor treatment of service workers is also rooted in this sense of urgency in things that are not actually urgent

This in every every *every* conversation Pixie have with people not in family . everybody in too much hurry to give any time or patience to Pixie using AAC device to communicate . Literally almost every person try to push Pixie to communicate faster and all that does is make Pixie silent and voiceless . So much hurrying for no good reason .

I run a panel at anime conventions about how to make your panels more accessible to disabled people, and one year I had an attendee with a severe stutter who wanted to make a comment. It was relatively short, but of course, because of his speech impediment it became much longer.

He actually cried a little after the panel and told me he couldn't remember the last time someone held an entire room in silence until he was done and didn't make him feel like he had to try to hurry up.

I told him nothing I had to say was more important than showing I was serious about holding space for disabled people and letting them speak for themselves.

He told me he's been in other "accessible" places where that isn't true.

Even the people who should know enough to slow down and have patience aren't able to do it.

This but I raise you, you step out onto the crosswalk, when you the pedestrian have right of way, and the car making the right hand turn, doesn't try to creep past, but tries to RACE you across! As in they see you stepping off and pick up speed to try and finish the turn before you get out.

I have dealt with so many of these people who think they deserve to get around the corner, WHEN I AM ACTIVELY STEPPING OFF THE SIDEWALK. And I should add, for important context, I am a crossing guard. This is happening while I am wearing a bright safety vest, holding a stop sign and actively trying to cross people (often little kids/families) that are ALSO right there.

The right turn racers are the fucking worst (I once was so close to one I had to slam my hand on the hood of the car AND shout at the driver to make him stop), but even the ones making the left hand turns do this sometimes. They think that just because they started turning and are partway into the intersection they're allowed to finish, even when I am literally standing in the middle of the road, sign up and crossing people. They move slowly enough but they KEEP MOVING. And then act indignant when I shout at them to stop.

I literally had one lady go 'but I'd already started and there were other cars (going through the intersection) what did you want me to do?' Stop. I wanted you to stop! Pedestrians quite literally have the right of way, esp when the WALK SIGN is active, in terms of priority, your left turn is literally at the bottom of the list. If you couldn't finish it, you have to fucking wait.

And it's always the old people. Like, I know you're short on life but please stop trying to shorten MY life goddamn.

This is a very charming illustration and I do approve of Accidental Latin, but unfortunately, that is not what this (Fake) Accidental Latin actually says. Google Translate seems to think "temu" is identical to "timor" (infinitive, "to fear"), which would then be conjugated in first-person singular as "timeo" ("I fear"). "Temu" is not a word in Latin. So that is a very weird leap on Google Translate's part to turn gibberish into... something vaguely etymologically similar sounding? Hmm.

Next, "die" does mean "day," though nominative singular is "dies," i.e. "dies irae." It could be conjugated "die" if it was in ablative or locative case, but "die ad die" would mean something more like "day to day." "Ad" is in a "to" direction and "ab" is from, i.e. "ab urbis," and ablative case is used to indicate the movement of a thing. In short, "by" is not really a way to translate "ad"; we might want "per" here? (Through, by means of, etc.)

Not to mention, it would be weird to put one "die" at the start and another at the end The verb also usually goes at the end in Latin sentences, just for that extra bit of fun. So yes, in short, this is not actually Latin, and Google Translate is very bad at Latin in particular. Nonetheless, still charming.

Agree, @qqueenofhades, except on the matter of breaking “die ad die” apart. It’s a common structure in poetic and oratorical Latin to jam one phrase in the middle of another. I can’t think of an example exactly parallel to this construction, but I could believe a Roman poet would write it!

Ah, that is true. My Latin is of the reading-medieval-documents (particularly charters and/or chronicles) variety, where the sentence and usage structures are often more formulaic and there is less poetic license to move words around. There is obviously far less fixity for word order in Latin, since the conjugations explain how they grammatically relate to each other rather than placement in the sentence. (Coincidentally, this is why I used to say that the best feeling in the world was walking past a Latin classroom and not having to go inside it. Ahem.)

So yes: true that poetical Latin might be more at liberty to split the "die"-s up that far, though "timeo" (verb) is still more likely in most cases to go at the end, which would place them together anyway ("die ad die timeo," "day to day I fear" if translated in strict word order, which would make sense to an English speaker and sound more poetic anyway). Keep in mind, however, that my Latin is a) fairly rusty and b) mostly used for said formulaic legal document reading rather than freeform verse, so don't super-hard quote me on this.

I saw that ablative “die” and that final -u on “temu” and thought of the ablative supine (as in “mirabile dictu”) but as you observe, there isn’t a verb that “temu” could be, and then also, the ablative supine requires an adjective, as far as I know.

But perhaps “temu” is a hapax legomenon (in which case we would need the rest of the text to gloss it) or a scribal error for temeratu, from temero, “I defile or disgrace”. In that case, and in true Tumblr form, I might translate it as “daily I disgrace, in the manner of the day”, with some errors attributable to the scribe.

As pointed out in the comments on Douyin, a lot of thought went into the engineering: oval wheels slow it down, the frame is close to the ground and the handle is angled to prevent it from tipping over, the wood pieces on the back wheels lock it from moving in reverse, and the knocking sounds serve more than one purpose, both attracting the attention of the child as well as allowing the adults to easily hear the speed and location of the child.
