So about The Avid Situation…

First off, WHAT THE FUCK, I look away for a few days and the first thing I see is this? Ahsjsdkcj?

I’ve spoken about this a bit on AO3 on some of my works which included him, but I wanted to put something here as well.

I will no longer be writing about him, nor drawing him, nor acknowledging his existence in fandom spaces (apart from hating on him because they fucking deserve it). Now I know what the DSMP fans were feeling 💀

I admire people who are able to soldier on and separate art from artist and all but I just don’t feel like it. Fanart and fanfic is, for me at least, a way of showing appreciation for creators, and I think we can all agree that Avid and Marm deserve no appreciation. From what I’ve heard, the things they said and did were absolutely VILE (and reminiscent of a high school bully from a cheesy movie, except they’re GROWN ASS ADULTS) and we as a fandom have a right to be pissed off. We watched their videos, listened to their music, made art of them, supported them, followed Avid on Spotify, some of us bought merch— only to find out they’re actually horrible, disgusting people? At risk of sounding parasocial, I think all us fans have a right to feel betrayed. Hopefully everyone they hurt and all the friendships they tried to split apart are healing. If you don’t want to keep writing about them in your fics or comics, here are some ideas to get around it:

Replace them with entirely different characters

We as a fandom can make up OCs to stand in for them (I believe this is already a project that’s underway)

Disrespect them and BLATANTLY ignore canon

Write them as the villains they are

we can take notes from other fandoms that have experienced this as well.

Some sketches I’ve done recently that turned out well :)

If you’re wondering why I often draw VSMP Scott as sad and dejected it’s because he’s fun to torment. If not meant to be in torment nexus why torment nexus shaped. Also the scars are from my headcanon that his Sire was really violent and awful, which is why he’s so cavalier and like flippant about violence, he’s really desensitized to it after always being put in danger by his Sire and not realizing how bad that was (which is also the reason he thinks he’s really benevolent and merciful, he’s comparing himself to the only example of a “normal” sire he has.) So all the times he was put in dangerous situations for his Sire’s amusement he assumed that’s just how most vampires are (this is also because I headcanon his parents were also not the greatest because I LIVE for characters in nobility dealing with evil parents, so he just got used to figures of authority being evil.) This is also the root of his very intense self preservation instincts, like how he always resorts to violence to protect himself and the few people he cares about, he thinks that’s just how the world works and if you can’t be violent (and aren’t Shelby) then too bad you just die. I have so many fic ideas but I also have too many WIPS so I can’t utilize this backstory idea yet. I will eventually though if anyone would be interested in reading that, my AO3 is ImLateForSchool.

I realized as I was posting this that the scars on his arm look like SH scars which wasn’t really the intent but feel free to interpret it that way if you so choose. It’s meant to look like his Sire is constantly grabbing I’m by the arm and just dragging him around like a ragdoll, which would leave some scars because like vampire claws and stuff. It can be up to the viewer though.

Dude, I almost cried yesterday because of AI. I can’t grade anymore without getting upset because of how much kids are using generative AI. How can I assess their ability to think critically when they aren't thinking critically? One kid admitted he used ChatGPT on an assignment, and he was like, "So? Is my answer right?" And I was like, first of all, whether or not it's "correct" is not the problem, and ALSO, it was INCORRECT. Like...majorly so!

They can’t fucking think for themselves (or rather, they’re losing the ability). This is not “ooooh technology scary” -- this is a fundamental, they can't fucking answer questions when I ask them to their faces. I fucking HATE when my colleagues roll their eyes and say, "Well, this is how we felt about phones! Just accept it!" First of all, it's different. And TWO! We're FUCKING FIGHTING PHONES every day! We've literally banned all cell phone use during class in my district because letting kids use their phones and not fighting their use in class FUCKED US OVER, and now we have to FIX IT.

Okay, but also, kudos to Tumblr, the weirdo website, and our anti-AI stance here because my weirdo queer kids are the ONLY ONES who are STAUNCHLY against gen AI; they're the only ones reliably not using AI. Dear children of Tumblr, thank you for being little weirdos who give a shit.

It was a slightly different situation, but it's translatable. This became a stable for me.

I asked my students if it's nice/helpful/good/acceptable/normal to help someone else lift something really heavy they were struggling with. Of course they agree! Then I asked them if it would still be (or explain to them that it isn't) nice/helpful/good/acceptable/normal to help someone lift heavy weights if they are working out at the gym. The answer is no! Because the POINT is that it's hard to do alone! That's why it makes you stronger! (Plus it gives the kids a very funny and therefore memorable visual for the concept. You can play into it and have a laugh with the kids at how weird someone would be if they did that!)

I often used "Don't lift their weights!" as a shorthand when a student was trying to give another kid the right answer.

Anyways, AI is lifting your weights for you. If you go to gym everyday and have a robot lift the weights for you, are you going to get any stronger? Even if you are going to the gym and "lifting weights" everyday? Even if the robot was really good at it? School is the gym for your mind. It's hard for the same reason gym weights are heavy.
