Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

The six New England states have 21 Congressional seats… and ZERO Republican Representatives.

Zero. Not one. Yet roughly 40% of the electorate in those states are registered Republicans — and in New Hampshire alone, it’s 48%.

How exactly does a party that claims to champion “democracy” deliver total one-party rule in an entire region where millions of voters clearly support the other side?

A perfect illustration for the need of the electoral college or at the very least term limits.

If anything, this is a repudiation of the electoral college. The presidential votes of Republican New Englanders are not counted because they happen to live in a state that is 60-80% blue.

And term limits will not solve this issue. The districts are all blue, so if a blue congressman gets term-limited, they will simply be replaced by another blue congressman. Banning gerrymandering won't fully solve the issue, either, since sometimes red voters in blue states (or even vice versa) are not geographically clustered enough to get their own district, even if the lines were drawn impartially.

I believe the way to give Republican New Englanders a voice in the poll booth is to do away with districts altogether and make it so that a coalition with X% of the votes will always win roughly X% of the seats.

I think there may also be a conversation to be had about whether or not voting is the best way to do democracy, or whether or not democracy is even a good thing, but I'm not exactly sure what side of that conversation I'd land on.

Thinking about that wizard tabletop game post from the other day, I think it's telling that the mindset of that person wasn't "Let's play a game with a party of wizards using a system that already exists, and the challenge is to not use violent spells", it was to create a whole new game where violence simply isn't an option.

It basically not only says "We need to try and force other people to play our way by the rules", but also "We need to force ourselves to play our way by the rules". It's essentially admitting that, given the option, they would eventually get frustrated and bored and resort to violence, so they have to completely eliminate that as an option due to lack of self control and lack of trust in the people they're playing with.

It's like all those game mods that remove fast travel. Inevitably someone asks the question "If you don't like fast travel, why don't you just not use it?", which prompts this long rant about how unrealistic and stupid and gamebreaking and yadda yadda fast travel is but never actually answers the question, because the answer is that they have no self control and if they left fast travel enabled they would use it.

I haven't seen the post to which you're referring, but if I don't see the problem with wanting to invent a nonviolent TTRPG (or play an existing nonviolent game) rather than play a violent game.

Like, going back to video games as an analogy, there's a big difference between doing a pacifist challenge run in a game like Skyrim vs. simply playing a nonviolent game like Animal Crossing.
