@solar-punked
the knight's tour
Under Virginia law, a month had to elapse before the death sentence could be carried out. Governor Wise resisted pressures to move up the execution date because, he said, he wanted everyone to see that Brown's rights had been thoroughly respected.
Brown made it clear repeatedly in his letters and conversations that these were the happiest days of his life. He would be publicly murdered, as he put it, but he was an old man and, he said, near death anyway. Brown was politically shrewd and realized his execution would strike a massive blow against Slave Power, a greater blow than he had made so far or had prospects of making otherwise. His death now had a purpose. In the meantime, the death sentence allowed him to publicize his anti-slavery views through the reporters constantly present in Charles Town, and through his voluminous correspondence.
Before his conviction, reporters were not allowed access to Brown, as the judge and Andrew Hunter feared that his statements, if quickly published, would exacerbate tensions, especially among the enslaved. This was much to Brown's frustration, as he stated that he wanted to make a full statement of his motives and intentions through the press.[54]: 212 Once he had been convicted, the restriction was lifted, and, glad for the publicity, he talked with reporters and anyone else who wanted to see him, except pro-slavery clergy.[46]
Brown received more letters than he ever had in his life. He wrote replies constantly, hundreds of eloquent letters, often published in newspapers,[133]: 43 and expressed regret that he could not answer every one of the hundreds more he received. His words exuded spirituality and conviction. Letters picked up by the Northern press won him more supporters in the North while infuriating many white people in the South.
KING
Just a couple of the quotes about him that I like:
“His zeal in the cause of freedom was infinitely superior to mine. Mine was as the taper light, his was as the burning sun. Mine was bounded by time. His stretched away to the silent shores of eternity. I could speak for the slave. John Brown could fight for the slave. I could live for the slave. John Brown could die for the slave.”
-Frederick Douglass
"That new saint, than whom nothing purer or more brave was ever led by into conflict and death, — the new saint awaiting his martyrdom, and who, if he shall suffer, will make the gallows glorious like the cross."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
[Image Description: initial tweet by Haymarket Books, at HaymarketBooks. It is dated May 9, Twenty twenty-three. It says "Abolitionist John Brown was born May 9, Eighteen hundred." Beneath the tweet is a grayscale portrait of John Brown, an elderly white man with a long, bushy beard. In reply, Edward Ongweso Jr, @ BigBlackJacobin, tweets "Happy birthday to this crazy ass white boy. One day we are gonna go back in time and give him power armor." End I.D.]
If I recall, certain Union units had songs about him during the Civil War.

Well yes
This is the stupidest thing I've put this much effort into in a long time.

Yap about how much you love the Pacific ocean, its inhabitants, ecosystems, and ways you can protect them during your next visit. 💙
call me a dirty communist radical but I think everyone should know if they live near toxic waste
if youre in the united states and would like to learn new and terrible things about where you live, you can visit the EPA's Environmental Justice Screening map and put in your location or zipcode
click on superfund proximity to see how close you are to a superfund site (location contaminated with hazardous material)
heres Niagra Falls NY! google love canal!
its a good tool to see what environmental factors could be harming your health that you may not know about. this is not limited to toxic waste so look around at it
my favorite is looking at roads. there are some interesting correlations. Here is a map of Buffalo NY with traffic proximity
here it is again but with where people are getting asthma :P
crazy
heres where the people of color live in Buffalo btw
in case you where wondering what the explanatory factor here is, its the 6-lane expressway that they ran through a residential community in the 50s. a redlined neighborhood btw. the road used to be beautiful parkway. thank you Urban Renewal, thank you Robert Moses, and thank you Kensington Expressway
ok heres the link again because now you really want to go look at it lol
anyways yeah um environmental health issues are super insidious and not talked about enough. i know thinks seem daunting and scary when we talk about environmental problems, things like climate change are huge and all-encompassing. The way you can make the most impact, real tangible impact is by learning about things local to you!!!!
learn about them, talk to other people about them, organize or find a way to get involved with orgs that already exist. grassroots activism is infinitely more effective than they want you to know and its your responsibility to yourself and your neighbors to try to make things better good luck I love you all
One day I showed up to D&D and one of the guys in our group, before we could even start playing, was like "guys, look at this thing I found." And pulled up either this exact map or a very similar one that cross checks environmental hazards from industrial facilities with average income (more detailed than by zip code, it was pretty cool). And we use a big TV embedded in the game table for maps and stuff, which he pulled this up on, so we spent like half an hour looking at where we all lived and going "oh. Shit." And then we sat there a bit kind of ambling through some cool down small talk.
And like, the thing that kind of made it real for everyone was the context of it being on the screen we use to look at world maps for a fantasy game. It was very surreal for some of the guys at the table, the more conservative ones in particular, like they could see the map and it was showing them the forces of Mordor marching to their doorstep. And for a short time they understood that there are actually vast and evil forces in this world that they could defeat with a weapon, they were just large corporations commiting environmental crimes with very well protected CEOs and fantastic lawyers.
check out your location while you can!!! Part of Trumps immediate changrs includes getting rid of public information sources like this one. I don't know if they will keep this website up for much longer so go on and download any reports or pollution information you might want
so as of today, February 5th 2025 this website is down. This is coinciding with mass censorship of other government agencies online from the Trump administration. Those who were able to download their data before the removal, keep it and learn it and share it with your peers. Those who did not get the chance, know that there are other avenues and follow them. Information is power and they are trying to take it away from you. Do not let them.
here are some other mapping resources from the notes. this is not everything, but it is a start.
Check the quality of your tap water here:https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/
Check your climate vulnerability here: https://climatevulnerabilityindex.org/
explore historical redlining maps here: https://dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/redlining
this is just the wikipedia page of current superfund sites, take a look and see where your state has hazardous waste sites.
look into the history of your area and TALK ABOUT IT. be annoying and loud about it. don't stop learning and don't stop talking.
update! here is a clone of the website, thank you @boots-fastened-slip-fashion for linking this in the replies I'm putting it here so it can be accessed along with the other sites :)
hey! if you're in the notes worrying about how the website is down, you should be rbing this version, which has a replica of the site and a bunch of other resources!!!
Do you know how one says ‘never’ in camp slang? ‘Morgen früh’, tomorrow morning. —Primo Levi
Nihilism allows for the possibility that there is no future. —Aragorn!
One of the connections that jumped out at me early on in my research was a continuous reference to time in both anarcho-nihilist and holocaust literature. While Häftlinge describe horrific experiences of the obliteration of time, nihilists often call for unmitigated attacks against time itself (No Future has become something of a dark motto). This section will set out to explore this connection and to understand what is meant by the anarcho-nihilist ambition to “stop time.” The concept of ‘futurity,’ the sense that one has a future under the existing order, threads these subjects together and provokes a discussion about the radical possibilities of chronological rupture. Those who experienced a complete rupture of futurity in the camps (e.g. realized what the chimneys were for, gave up on allied liberation, etc.) often sunk into a grim and catatonic state, but in some instances they reacted ferociously. Though the most well-known acts of physical resistance against the Nazis were planned and coordinated actions, there were also countless unplanned attacks that plagued the Nazi thirst for order and obedience. Of the stories that have been passed down to us, scant details survive. Some of these stories are patched together from multiple, partial witnesses, while others are merely inferred from the silences they created. These act of spontaneous resistance resonate deeply with anarcho-nihilism, for nowhere else does the rallying cry of No Future apply as well as to those who responded to utterly hopeless situations with acts of fierce abandon. Inmates who physically confronted their oppressors were not engaged in a “rational political struggle for a better future,” but rather understood the futility of their situations and chose to fight back regardless. These moments can help us to understand what is at stake in our rethinking of time and what it might mean for us to sever ourselves from oppressive chronological modes.
One day of insurrection is worth a thousand centuries of normality —Wolves of Solidarity, Pacific Column
Each of these moments reflects a shattering of illusion, a fierce visceral reaction to oppression, a desperate act in a totally hopeless situation. Liberation in these moments was not necessarily a material gain, but a fleeting lived experience; an existential reorientation from a relationship of domination to one of recalcitrance. Pure [joy in the act of destruction]. Some of these attacks resonated widely outside of their perimeter and punctured holes in the Nazi facade of invulnerability, perhaps even inspiring others to fight back. Other attacks simply dissipated in a hail of gunfire. Regardless, each of them seem to defy any notion of hope or strategy, and the very fact that each story ends with a mass slaughter gestures towards a spirit of resistance that prioritized lived revolt over [any conception of the future].

saying “you are a burden on society” is just such a weird framing of priorities It’s like saying “wow, think how much better gas mileage your car would get if you weren’t sitting in it” or “think how dry that umbrella would be if you weren’t holding it in between you and the rainstorm”. the things we create? they’re for us. they are meant to carry us. they are meant to protect us. we are meant to hold them up to keep us dry.
“useless eaters” is a fun concept with absolutely no historical precedent,
I saw this and I thought Tumblr might enjoy it
