The Novel, Explained
hello! this is a blog i decided to make specifically for song of the sky, my novel. initially i was only posting about it on my main but it was getting kind of clogged and hard to follow so i figured this would be better. this is just to organize things mainly.
song of the sky is a novel adaptation of wolfgang amadeus mozart's opera the magic flute, his last opera, although it takes the story in a vastly different direction. after hearing stories of a mystical, advanced feline society in the heart of the city, a young bengal housecat- dissatisfied with his life- escapes to the underbelly of chicago to fulfill his destiny and find his purpose. when his trip goes awry, he ends up in the paws of the starblazer, the mysterious ruler of all city cats, and she tells him she and she alone knows of his ultimate fate. ready to prove himself, the bengal- renamed tamino- sets off on a quest to find his fate and defeat the starblazer's rival, the supposedly-malicious king sarastro iii. but on the way, tamino- and pamina, the starblazer's daughter- realize that the world around them is far more complex than they could ever imagine, and that both the starblazer and king sarastro have murkier intentions in mind...
word for the wise: song of the sky deals with several dark topics, although i would not say it is an incredibly dark piece of literature as a whole. while i won't go into these in detail on this blog, the novel does deal with themes of emotional abuse, animal/child death, parental abuse, manipulation, and suicide. additionally, it is based on a 1791 opera with glaring flaws (namely bigotry) and while it exists as a deconstruction of its inspiration, it is important to acknowledge that before continuing.
