If this this is going to be her attitude towards Irish people voicing concern over their history then then I don't want the show made at all
So English-spoken are so dumb they can’t understand a show if the protagonist name is in Irish?
Clearly, even though they seem to manage just fine with high fantasy names.
i worry for native english speakers tbh
It gets better
(Her name is Gráinne Ní Mháille, and it's pronounced Grawn-ya ni wall-ya. I genuinely do not know where she got the pronunciation Gran Whale)
i am So Fucking Done with this bitch and i haven't had a Single interaction with her
Love how shows will use (incorrectly pronounced) Irish as a stand in for woo woo fantasy places names but when actual representation comes into play it would just be “too hard to understand :(” like stfu
So, a couple things here:
First and foremost. Fuck the anglicisation of Ireland. The erasure of the Irish culture was centuries long, and still continues today, particularly with the Irish language (many xenophobic people in Northern Ireland believe that speaking Irish is a sure sign of IRA involvement).
From this point forward, please correct me on anything if you are a native Irish speaker. I am simply an American hobbyist.
The way I’ve heard her true full name has always been Gráinne ni Mháille (Grah-nyeh nee wah-lyuh [or wah-luh depending on regional dialect). I have also seen Gráinne Mhaol (grah-nyuh well), but understood it to be a shortening, or nickname.
I haven’t seen Gráinne Ó Mháille before. I do know that the Ó prefix demarcates lineage more than one generation removed (grandchild of ____/of the line of____).
Could these be differences between the three main dialects (Munster, Connacht, Ulster)?
Again, if I’m way off base let me know. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there with way more knowledge of Gaeilge.
I discuss why she used the O variation here (basically she was a badass and went by the male version) but you’re spot on with almost everything else. The example of her pronunciation that I gave is just me trying my best to put it in phonetics, but I think your version may be more useful 😅but there are differences between the dialects (I’m from ulster) and fadas can also change pronunciation.
Lots of love from Ireland ❤️
Can we please shift the conversation from whether labels are "valid" and start asking substanial questions such as are they useful? Are they useful politically or for building communities and movements? Do they make sense? How are they materially different from other labels? What kind of message do they send about people who don't subscribe to that label? Why would we need them? What are they based on? What is their history, origin and purpose? Are they useful irl? Why do they make use feel different than older, more stigmatised labels?
Let's move beyond individual feelings and immediate gratification and start asking what's useful and helpful for us as a movement if we want to achieve material change
All I ever get as a response when criticising certain labels is "you're wrong, xyz is valid!!!"
Okay but is it useful? Is it harmful? Does it make sense? Why do we need it? Let's have a real conversation bitch, I'm past this "everything is valid" kindergarten nonsense

HECK
sometimes i truly forget that everyone sees characters straight as default bc i saw a comment like “next thing you know they’ll make luke skywalker gay” and im just…….. he…. he is ?
I keep thinking about that text post that’s like “don’t worry Mr. Skywalker. I saw your Chanel boots”
This one
A bird explaining to a hedgehog crossing so it doesn’t die.
!!! ok but that’s legitimately what it’s doing!! That’s a corvid right there (looks like a hooded crow, to be precise), which means it’s intelligent enough to recognize, a) cars are dangerous and streets should be treated with a certain degree of caution, b) this car’s slowing down for them–cars do that sometimes–which means they’re not in imminent danger, so it doesn’t have to fly away just yet, c) that hedgehog’s still gonna get killed if it doesn’t MOVE, FAST (cars can change speed very quickly and the hedgehog’s still in the way), and almost certainly also d) if the bird does nothing it gets a free lunch.
Y’all, Y’ALL. This bird is consciously deciding to put itself in danger in order to save the life of a very stupid creature. A creature which, if the bird did nothing, could be free food.
i can’t - look if you follow me you know I have a thing for corvids, but this is - like!!! People are always saying “ah yes they have sub-human intelligence and don’t consider anything that isn’t immediately necessary for their own survival/pleasure,” but! Whether or not it can do philosophy, this crow is clearly demonstrating compassion. Even if it’s just the kind of compassion a toddler shows to a snail, a social creature that instinctively recognizes the potential for emotion in other beings, that’s still huge and cool and important and corvids!!! are! neat!!!
I really loved this moment.
there are worse places he could have picked to fight a water bender but the list isn’t very long
Avatar: The Last Airbender 1.05 | The King of Omashu
Wow those moves look like someone who’s childhood best friend was an airbender
…Shit, you’re right.
That spin he does. That is an airbendery move.
Literally the exact same move Aang pulls when he gets off his glider (cant find a gif but like… I promise)
This shows attention to detail was unreal.
Even the fall backwards! That looks like the exact kind of thing a fun loving Airbender kid would do while showing off gliders and airbending proficiency.
the best benders in this show tend to be the ones who adapt elements of other bending techniques. Bumi has some airbender-y movements, Zuko and Iroh use some Air and Water movements, even Katara tends to use some earthbender looking moves when bending ice
Meanwhile Toph just took earthbending and cranked it all the way up to 11.
Everyone else: The spice of variety! The four elements make mine stronger! Ballerina time!
Toph:….meTal….bendy bendy
take into account that Toph might not be able to take other bending styles into her own. Because those styles (especially fire and air) require you to lift your feet off the ground and for Toph she would lose her way of connecting to the world like he’s used too.
Toph took earthbending, made it her bitch, and made it adapt to her needs as a disabled person.
This is the bare minimum of decent human behavior for ANY gender. If you are an adult and someone who is not an adult wants to have a relationship with you, it is your duty to, at bare minimum, turn them away.
and like... having crushes on adults is a Normal Adolescent Thing, but it doesn’t mean they’re ready for--or for that matter, want--an actual relationship with said adult. it’s a goddamn developmental phase for kids working out their sexuality, and treating it as a chance to get laid is fucking monstrous.
Recommended tactics to deal with a child hitting on you:
“kiddo”
“buddy”
inform a friend to ensure you’re never left alone with them
refer to own age in conversation
“yeah, I know I look young, but you wouldn’t BELIEVE how awkward it is being mistakenly hit on by a teenager!”
upon that child turning 18:
“Happy birthday, kiddo!”
“Have you registered to vote yet?”
“Man, being a baby adult was so hard, good luck with that”
u know what im gonna add that even if ur 18/19 and u get a crush on someone in their 30s/40s and they dont turn u down they are taking advantage of u bc they know ur a teenager with way less adult experiences as them and they are purposefully dating u bc they think they can manipulate u
all those posts like “don’t give yourself bangs during quarantine” “don’t dye your hair” “don’t shave your head” are honestly bullshit this is the Perfect time you’re literally not allowed to leave the house for god knows how long do something crazy who gives a fuck
Counterpoint: I saw a lady with a choppy (natural) grey Mohawk today that looked sick as hell and she said "thanks, its my living room special". Be the post apocalyptic rebel you wanna see
maybe if bernie just showed a little more skin

I cant stop thinkjing about this it KILLS me
