So i was just going to screenshot this post and-

very annoying to see all the over-simplified and narrow-minded takes on the Madrigal family’s treatment of Mirabel as if all of them except Antonio and her parents were cruel and ostracized her (even saw some say Julieta is emotionally abusive and gaslights her?? HUH??), when we see very clearly that they’ve;

A. always considered her to be part of the family and

B. love her immensely and show in her in their own ways.

but were AT WORST passively neglectful or insensitive of her feelings as the only giftless kid born to the Madrigals partially due to Mirabel’s failure to express herself. even Abuela was not so much cruel as she was cold and dismissive of Mirabel, but you’d think by some of these takes she constantly berated her and kicked her and Bruno out. even at the ceremony nobody actually tells Mirabel to stay out of the family photo, hell some of them might have even assumed she was with them in it. everyone was obviously very focused on Antonio. Felix and Augustin also have no gifts and joined in the photo! She CHOSE to stay in the shadows and watch them celebrate from afar during “Waiting for a Miracle” because of her own insecurities and self pity. Bruno wasn’t kicked out, he CHOSE to run into the walls and hide from his family to avoid confrontation and what he believed was to protect his niece, and Mirabel later followed by choosing to run away while they all went looking for her. and who knew exactly where to find her by the river? Abuela Alma. 

Mirabel herself is a very flawed character and not because she’s giftless or quirky. she is a wonderful, compassionate, and talented girl but failed to not only see that her sisters and cousins were buckling under the pressures of their own gifts, but to communicate that she wanted AND needed to feel needed and valued by them. in the beginning of Family Madrigal she puts on a big smile and also plays along in pretending that everything’s perfect while avoiding talking about herself and being giftless. 

when her mom and dad attempt to comfort her and Augustine gives her well-meaning advice about being a giftless person in the family, she’s pretty much dismissive of him and chooses several times to wallow in her own self-pity, most notably during Antonio’s ceremony. I love these qualities about her because it’s ridiculously accurate for an insecure teenager, to expect people to read her mind and understand how she’s feeling rather than openly expressing that she wants to be actively included and acknowledged by her grandma and family. Mirabel was just as self-centered as Isabela in a subtler way. she never once made it clear just how hurt and inferior she felt until her explosive argument with Abuela. she was also playing along and pretending everything including her feelings and role in the family were totally fine. casita cracking was symbolic for her breaking point. how they ALL needed to break down and let everything out to be built up with support and acceptance of each other again, with Mirabel most of all. the Madrigals are a genuinely good and loving family that only needed to learn to communicate better and accept themselves regardless of the magic. Mirabel just realized it first.

my favourite trope is “antagonist and protagonist narrowly avoiding each other in the same space” and The Emperor’s New Groove nails it perfectly I wish more media did stuff like this

Comedy points I only consider now after watching this clip 6 times:

• Yzma is entirely unsurprised to find Kronk suddenly working in the kitchen. “Why am I not surprised,” she says. This is just typical Kronk

• Kronk immediately starts making the potato side. He starts to add cheese, stops, starts again, CATCHES IT ON HIS OVEN MITT

• back to yzma’s unsurprise. Is this because she continually finds him helping people. when she asks him to go shake down citizens for taxes does she find him changing lightbulbs and rehanging doors. Is that why she hired him, he’s the most competent incompetent minion ever

• what does kronk’s resume look like
