Disclaimer: This is all based on my research, experiences, opinion, & personal path. I am just sharing what I’ve learned/experienced.
——————– Mundane Rules: • Be sympathetic, don’t disturb others in the graveyard • Don’t act wild • Keep children in “check” • Keep your pets on a leash • Don’t walk on the graves • Don’t litter • Follow the specific cemeteries rules • Leave before dark These are an important reminder for all to keep in mind before entering a graveyard, now, let’s focus on the stuff that applies to magickal practitioners. Before You Enter: Keep in mind every graveyard is different, its energy is different, the spirits in the graveyard are different. If a graveyard gives off harmful energy or feels like it’s trying to keep you away then don’t go inside! When You Enter: Sit for a moment & make your intention clear, who you are, why you are here, that you do not intend to be disrespectful or cause any harm, ect. If you can, perhaps leave an offering. Offerings: • Coins (Preferably shiny ones) • Food • Drink (Specifically liquor) • Flowers
As stated above, you could leave a general offering of peace as you enter the graveyard. You could also give offerings to any specific spirit you work with or that aids you in your practice. If you work with a spirit consistently, or their your ancestor, you may offer something you know they will like. Something they enjoyed in life. While You Are There: • Picking up litter is great way to show you mean respect, it’s also just a nice thing to do • DO NOT take anything from the graveyard • DO NOT lean against/sit on the graves/headstones/memorials/markers ect ect • Perhaps do some divination or magick, see below If you intend to do magick in the graveyard, remember to ground, center, & ward yourself like you would with any other spell but especially in the graveyard. You don’t want any outside energies interfering with your work, after all, you probably aren’t familiar with all the spirits that work there. If you intend to do divination in the graveyard, same rules apply. Be careful, it is likely you’ll get a lot of interference in a graveyard from outer energies or spirits. On Not Taking Things From Graveyards: “What? Why can’t I take things? I want graveyard dirt for a spell! Isn’t that what witches do?” Hold your horses there, please keep in mind you are taking energy from that graveyard, even if the body isn’t directly touching it that is where their spirit is set. If you want grave dirt, you need to ask permission from the owner of the grave. This isn’t a very good idea to do on just any visit, work & openly communicate with this spirit before you take anything from their grave. A general rule is don’t take it if it isn’t given or paid for.
Before You Leave: Thank the spirits of the graveyard for their time, their peacefulness, for allowing you to be there. If you did divination/magick & it went well or you gained some guidance, thank any spirits for their assistance as well. After You Leave: Cleanse/ward yourself when you can just to be sure no energies or spirits stuck to you or followed you home. Keep your senses open & watch out in the time after visiting the graveyard to be sure nothing followed you back. I hope this helped you or you learned something! Enjoy! Have a lovely day 💖
