One year ago, trans women held an iconic topless protest outside the Scottish Parliament. I love it when trans women hold topless demonstrations. If they're arrested, the state must admit they're women. If they aren't, it exposes the obvious contradictions of defining trans women as legally male.

Now, a year later, Parliament has its first two transgender members, one of whom represents JK Rowling in Edinburgh. We can't attribute this momentum solely to the protest, but the direct action seems to have galvanized a new political movement of trans people across Scotland.

Hi! I just found out my sister is in the hospital unable to respond to me, and about 6 hours away. I would love to be able to go see her, but I have 0 gas money.

I would absolutely love help with this ask, although a complicated relationship my sister is the only family I have and id do anything for her. And I dont know whats going on but things have been really bad for her health wise before.

If someone wanted to help me with gas to make the trip out there today, I would be forever appreciative.

Id probably need around $80 to make a round trip, but honestly anything helps and just getting there right now is the goal.

we are in an incredible age of medicine where you can easily get most of them treated, you can get vaccinated against some, and even HIV is no longer a death sentence (and i believe a cure is in the works rn). it is not a big deal. be safe, yes, but also don't be a judgy weirdo to people who do get infected because they weren't "being safe." especially because if you do not perpetually mask in public you have less than zero ground to stand on there.

The stigma of treating STIs like a “special” type of pathogen is almost funny when I tell people I’d rather get gonorrhea than a cold.

But like. Compare em. Cold symptoms: runny nose, cough, congestion, tiredness, muscle aches, hard to sleep, just general sick feeling. All constant, all disruptive. Gonorrhea symptoms: irritation while peeing, discharge (and that’s if you get any symptoms at all). Localized, mostly a nuisance. There’s no cure for the common cold, just over the counter symptom alleviators that never fully work. Gonorrhea is cleared up within 48 hours with a shot (which is potentially free, if you have good clinics nearby). Sure, you can’t have sex for a week after that, but you can’t really have sex for the 1-2 weeks you’re afflicted with a cold either.

The worst part about gonorrhea is having to tell previous partners they should get tested, but the only reason that’s the worst part is because of the stigma around it. Everyone in a friend group or office catching the same cold isn’t treated with the same stigma, even though it’s the exact same thing (if anything, worse, because when you have a cold you know it and you allowed your friends to be exposed, when you’ve got gonorrhea you often don’t even know).

i genuinely worry seeing how some of you talk about protection (which, to be clear, is great!) as the sole ward against a universally life ruining illness. if you're sexually active then it's more likely than not that at some point in your adulthood you or one of your partners will get a positive on a panel, when this happens the most likely outcome is that recent partners get phone calls and then everyone at significant risk goes into a clinic and gets a shot in the arm that kind of stings and then you don't have unprotected sex for like a week. ymmv depending on the infection and your relationship style and status. protection is cheap and a great option to reduce worry in your life but you are doing nothing to advocate its use by talking about STIs in the same fire-and-brimstone way your that your abstinence-only gym/sex ed teacher did
