Anyway, daily reminder from a culturally isolated Romani person.
Gypsy does not mean wanderer.
It literally means ‘people from egypt’ or similar, as europeans believed Romani people were from Egypt. It has become known similar to nomad due to how our ancestors have been forced to be nomadic due to racism and ostracization, but it is a SLUR.
Romani people are STILL being forcibly sterilized.
Romani people are STILL being forced into ghettos.
Romani people are still facing violence and danger in countless European countries- and recently, I’ve seen the beginnings of the extremes in the United States.
Have a little fucking respect and DON’T USE A SLUR THAT’S BEEN USED FOR CENTURIES AGAINST US.
And for the love of whatever’s up there, ESPECIALLY do not use it to describe your witchcraft. It is playing on the ‘magic gypsy’ trope, and is EXTREMELY insulting.
non romani people, please reblog this.
Yall...don’t say that you “hate disney remakes” and “wish disney would come out with original content instead” and then go to see the Lion King because you want to see how bad it is.
Disney is still making money, whether you go because you want to genuinely see it or you go because you want to see how much you hate it.
Disney recieves all its messages in money. If Lion King flops, they’ll stop making these shitty remakes. Please, for the love of our childhoods, don’t go see this movie as a joke.
(Bruh look at how stiff and lifeless it is compared to the original. Sure, it looks realistic, but it lacks character!)
except they wont stop making them.
these movies are not simple cashgrabs
theyre specifically made for copyright laws to keep their stories and characters from becoming public domain.
dont see the movies duh they suck but theyre not simple cash grabs riding nostaligia and only that, theyre specifically saving their own asses from having to give up their precious characters to the public domain. disney has a lot of money lobbying for harsher copyright and making copyright indefinite, and they have had some copyright guidelines legally changed to suit them.
its really not this simple.
i used to agree with calling disney’s live action remakes god i’m so sick of that phrase this decade’s version of the “cheapquels” they put out in the 90s but i now i feel like that’s letting disney off too easy bc, as lame as they are as a whole, the sequels are exactly the level of quality you should expect from rushed, low-budget projects. most of them weren’t given the proper time, resources, or marketing to end up as anything more than uninspired, forgettable cash-grabs so the end result at least makes sense.
the remakes on the other hand have insanely high budgets that are used on A-list celebrity casts and expensive CGI. plus they’re rigorously marketed as blockbuster events on par with any of their other flagship IPs. these things don’t have the excuse of crappy budgets and tight production timelines so the fact that they come out as bland and soulless as any cheapquel pisses me off to no god damn end.
and what makes it so much worse is that they’re getting away with it. we didn’t let disney off the hook for the sloppy work they did back then, and we sure as hell shouldn’t be doing it now. but even though the critical reception is usually low for the remakes, audiences still buy movie tickets and dvds and blu rays and disney just keeps funneling that money into more of these lifeless tributes to capitalism and it is more disappointing to watch than any hunchback of notre dame 2 could ever be
If you dare come at me about banning straws, I will throw you into the sun cannon. I’m disabled, I’m crippled, I need disposable plastic straws, and all those pricey ridiculous alternatives aren’t working as well. Plastic straws were invented for the disabled.
Way to shit all over a vital access need because you think straws are worse than corporate greed.
We all care about the turtles, the seals, the oceans, obviously. Notice how the easiest thing to yell about was something that would barely affect anything but appealed heavily to emotional discourse.
The disabled community is huge, and it can be joined by anyone. Most of those As Seen On TV products were invented for us. Society still mocks us and ignores us, and often outright harms us in multiple ways.
Communicate better. Listen better. But stop putting us out in the cold because you are inconvenienced by our simplest needs.
Straws aren’t killing the planet, its animals, or people. They’re a microscopic fraction of an iota of a percentage of the problem. You want to do something? Ban plastic fishing nets. Anything else is just a hollow feel-good gesture at the expense of real living disabled people.

So are you of the Barthes "The Death of the Author" school of thought, at least in regards to the added canon that JK Rowling is doing?
Absofuckinglutely not.
The people on this website absolutely should not and cannot be trusted with “the death of the author” concept because there are only a select few people on this website who understand the core difference between “this is my interpretation of this work” and “this is the only interpretation of this work” which so easily leads to “this is the only interpretation of this work and fuck you for ever thinking otherwise I hope you kill yourself while your family watches”.
Which is inherently bad in and of itself but then you add that to the fact that tumblr is so unabashedly selfish when it comes to representation that they’ll strip what was meant to be representation for someone else just so that the concept fits them too.
And again, from a pure interpretation standpoint, there’s nothing wrong with anyone thinking something represents them while someone else thinks it represents them. Something like:
“Hey, I’m queer and I think the song Bohemian Rhapsody really represents my struggle.” “Hey, I’m suicidal, and I think the song Bohemian Rhapsody really represents my struggle.” “Hey, my mom just murdered someone yet somehow I’m responsible for making her cry and I think the song Bohemian Rhapsody really represents my struggle.”
Those are all fine.
What’s not fine is when you get stuff like, oh, I don’t know:
“Well, in my opinion, Holmes was written to be asexual/aromantic and he and Watson had a friendship that surpassed most male friendships during this time-period as they were able to show emotion and confide in one another, going against forms of toxic mascul—” “PFFFT GAY THEY’RE FUCKING GAY, YOU HOMOPHOBE, SHERLOCK WENT DOWN ON HIM 10 TIMES A DAY, THEY’RE G A Y!”
It’s that selfishness, that refusal to admit that there are other interpretations, that makes “The Author Is Dead” trope so dangerous on this hellsite because people will not only unabashedly reject the person who made the work they allegedly love, they’ll go one step further by claiming their interpretation is the only interpretation while bashing anyone else who says otherwise.
And soon, without anyone there to argue the author’s original intentions, representation and intent end up disappearing. And I get it, sometimes that’s a great thing. How JKR managed to write a whole series without thinking Harry would be a great teacher is beyond me. But sometimes, it’s fucking terrifying, because tumblr doesn’t know when to stop stripping away for their own personal gain.
The first time I was ever introduced to this concept on this site was years ago when there was a picture of an art piece where a man and a woman were holding the quivers of this combo-bow-and-arrow and were leaning back and they had to stay in their positions or else their arrows would strike the other. Since the woman was leaning farther back, the ‘edgy’ caption was that it was a symbol of how women had to carry more emotional weight. I reblogged with the artist’s name, trying to explain that the piece was so much more than some seventh-wave feminist interpretation. It was the artist’s way of showing trust in a relationship because if either of them slipped up, it would destroy them both, so they had to work together to make sure they got through this. And I got a bunch of pretentious sixteen-year-old edgelords screaming, “The author is dead” and mocking me for trying to argue that she wasn’t.
It’s early, it’s daylight savings time, time confuses me, and I want ginger ale so I’m ending it here with a:
TLDR: You can have your interpretations, you can even consider them canon, but don’t give this hellsite the freedom to kill off a person’s interpretations, even (especially) if that person was the original author.
Or, to put it best using a quote that I love:
THE AUTHOR IS NOT DEAD, MERELY SOMEWHERE ELSE!
That’s a concept I can get behind!
Also I didn’t know where to put this part but don’t any of you look at my books in ten years (period, just don’t in general) and say, “The main character has CP because I said so.” “…But the author said she has Spina Bifida.” “The author is dead.” “The author’s sitting right over there drinking chocolate milk with a crazy straw.” *Blows bubbles as I wave* “THE AUTHOR IS DEAD!”
I think this is really interesting and has some excellent points, but overall I can’t agree. First off, you’re absolutely right that multiple interpretations are essential for any work, and disrespect of interpretations/headcanons, and especially the abuse that often comes with that, is shitty and unacceptable behavior and “the author is dead” is not a good excuse for it.
That being said, I feel like there is a misunderstanding of what Death of the Author means here; before the theory became popularized, the traditional method of literary criticism involved intense research into the author’s life, essentially creating a mini-biography in order to determine what the text was “really” about. This is still an interesting form of analysis, but at the time it was considered the only correct one. There was no way to talk about what a book said without prioritizing what the author meant it to say.
This is, of course, a very restrictive form of criticism (that leaves a huge margin of error), and arguments about a text could be ended simply by pulling up receipts of “well the author said this” and all other interpretations were therefore invalid.
Then Barthes shows up and basically says that it doesn’t matter what the author meant: if it’s present — or not present — in the text then it’s a valid basis for interpretation whether the author intends it or not. (I don’t know necessarily if this was Barthes’ opinion, but it is mine that if what the author intended isn’t readily available in the text, then frankly they failed in their job and their “because I said so” doesn’t mean a dang thing.)
Death of the Author is useful in providing more interpretations, not fewer, and while I agree that many tumblr users treat the theory as a way to shut down criticism and that is unfortunate, that isn’t the fault of the theory. With the example of the arrow piece, obviously the author’s intention is interesting, and your/her interpretation is clearly present in the text of the work (based on how you’ve described it in any case, because I haven’t seen it). But it is also true that the woman is leaning back farther, and that is an element of the text worth discussing as well. So while those users should not have shot down your interpretation, and of course we should always show due respect to the creator of any work, the argument for any adherent of Death of the Author should’ve been based on the textual evidence that supports your and the artist’s version, not just because the artist says so.
TL;DR Tumblr’s failure to use Death of the Author correctly doesn’t invalidate its usefulness as a way to interpret any given text (and to some extent my personal opinion, as a big stan of the theory, that the author’s opinion/intention is interesting but not altogether relevant unless it is supported by textual evidence).
I still wouldn’t trust tumblr to healthily use an in-depth psycho-socio-historical analysis if the furry snaters put their anime swords to my throat and demanded that trust, but this is an excellent meta on why the original concept is so important and what this website could have been in another life…
THE AUTHOR IS OF LIMITED RELEVANCE
call me ignorant but i genuinely don’t understand why sports have to be split up by gender.
@ everyone in the notes talking about physical performance: if that were the case, then sports would be divided by physical performance. that’s a thing you can measure. that’s a thing that varies by individual. a weak man and a strong man would be an unfair fight in boxing/wrestling/MMA, which is why they divide those sports up into weight groups based on physical performance. but they also further segregate them based on gender. chess is segregated by gender for no reason but sexism. if it’s actually about skill and physical ability, then measure those and separate people by those metrics. don’t do some bullshit gender segregation and pretend like men and women are inherently on different levels no matter their individual abilities.
Remember that time a teenage girl struck out Babe Ruth? That’s fucking why. Men are afraid of being beaten by women.
Remember that time male swimmers were pulled out of training because Kate Ledecky was leaving them ‘broken’ by swimming better than them? Remember how she didn’t even notice, because she was busy actually training?
Shooting is a sport that has no reliance on strength and so any allowance for gender variation is irrelevant. The last time there was a mixed competition (1992) a chinese woman named Zhang Shan won it.
It’s often presented as for the benefit of women. After all, they’ll be heartbroken when they‘re hurt or bested by men.
Projection is a hell of a drug.
this is why they drug test Serena like crazy. the believe no woman should be that good. let alone a black woman. and black women have always been considered “manly” and less feminine.
also can we talk about how surfing is segregated as well? like how the dude who won this years international surfing cup or whatever was given $30,000 worth of prize money, while the woman who won the women’s comp was only awarded like $16,000 of prize money???? or whatever it was. but I know it was either half or less than half of what the man won. like why can’t they get the same prize money and when they’re competing internationally in the same competition? they surely have the same level of skill and talent.
the pay gap in sports between men and women is fucking insane.
The pay gaps, not to mention lack of sponsorships for women athletes who don’t look like models is insane. If you weigh over 250 pounds, no one will sponsor you. It’s why most female Olympic-class weightlifters live in poverty/out of their cars.
A comic I’ve written after reading 90s cyberpunk essays, then worked into a comic in the last 5 weeks for an assignment.
Oh wow this spoke to a lot more people than I thought.
It’s sad that toxic game culture is so prevalent cuz like. As someone who has ended up in random matches with kids before, I can attest to how fucking easy it is to reverse and un-teach shitty attitudes in kids.
Example: I downloaded Friday the 13th because it’s free on psn. I dunno how to play, so I just enter quick play and I’m matched with 3-4 kids on mic. Immediately on mic they’re shitty and disparaging to each other. They laugh at each others deaths, they actively work against team mates and self sabotage, they call each other “fags”, etc. From the sounds of the voices they cannot be older than 13-14.
I put on my mic and just decide I ain’t havin it. I am nice. I thank them for barricading doors or leaving me items. When they break free from Jason’s grasp I say “good job!” or I try to help them. One kid survived for most of the match by himself. When he dies, I tell him he did a fantastic job.
The mood shift is practically INSTANT. These kids almost immediately stop being dick heads. They start encouraging each other and being kind. After the match all of them try to friend request me. Which should tell you a couple of things:
A) kids want to be kind, and they want to have a nice time playing games. But encounters with adults like me or so rare that they’ve trained themselves to instantly put on a toxic, shitty, defensive veneer when encountering any new person online. It’s literally just THAT EASY to not groom a horrible gaming community, it’s just that NO ONE does it.
B) the speed of which they all tried to friend me was cute, but paints for me such a sad picture? Like these kids are SO desperate to find people to play with who aren’t crappy jerks. They played with me for 10 minutes TOPS and all instantly tried to reach out to me.
tl;dr: The kids are alright. Adults are shit heads.
I cant agree with this post more

THE TRAINS HAVE CARTOON TAMAS ON THEM
Sad update everyone, Tama recently passed away… An estimated 3,000 people, including railway officials, attended Tama the cat’s funeral on Sunday, days after she died of heart failure aged 16. [x]
For those who haven’t read articles about it, the local shrine elevated her to a god. She’s now the Eternal Stationmaster and patron god of the station.
Beautiful.
Now I’m crying thanks
and a new cat was hired right?
yep! her name is Nitama (essentially ”second tama” or “tama II”) and she served under Tama as an apprentice before being appointed her deputy
she works very hard
Everytime this crosses my dash, I reblog. It is the law.
I’m crying at 11pm over train cats
Nitama, already now a mature cat (born 2010), has a protege named Yontama (fourth Tama, b. 2016). There is no information available for either the physical befellment or tragic self-disgrace which has removed Santama from contention.
^Nitama majestic, and below with Yontama
Yontama.
a legacy
I’d just like to add that there is a ‘Santama’, whose name was ‘SUNtamatama’ (the capitalisation is not my own, it’s in the actual name). They were sent to Okayama prefecture for station-master training. The Okayama PR rep Mister/Ms Y, who was looking after SUNtamatama then refused to let go of the cat, saying something along the lines of, “This child is ours and I will not let them go, they will stay in Okayama”, and so SUNtamatama remained in Okayama.
This is SUNtamama below:
