Importance of the Black Rose Saga and the Nature of Ohtori Academy

So recently I finished watching Utena, and since I’ve been absorbing as many analyses and viewpoints as I can find. There seems to be a very troubling trend of people writing off the Black Rose Saga as filler or unimportant in the long run because it basically ret cons itself in the story. 

Now anyone who knows Utena or Ikuhara’s other works knows that generally everything is important in some way and that nothing is wasted. Needless to say that an arc that makes up a forth of the show is far from filler - it’s vitally important and meant to give us insight into what happens at the very end of the series.

What was so heartbreaking about Suletta’s response to Miorine question of whether or not she’d really sacrifice her whole being if Prospera told her to is that its really obvious she’s forcing herself to rationalize this mindset of hers as the correct one. Even though deep down there’s a small, but very real seed of doubt.

When Miorine asks if Suletta would willingly give up her dream of creating a school for Mercury, her immediate response isn’t a yes. She becomes fidgety, awkwardly rubbing her fingers together and becoming more and more uncomfortable. 

Whenever shes faced with some kind of internal crisis and needs immediate reassurance and mental stability from that crisis, Suletta will always go back to the mindset of “ Well if my mom says I should do this, then it must be right”

But when Miorine really presses her on whether she would actually use Gundams to kill people, she has this pained expression on her face 

The thought clearly disturbs her, and internally there’s conflict between what her mom is telling her she should do, and what her own moral compass is telling her what the right thing to do is.

But once again, in a response that seems very forced and not at all indiciative what she truly feels deep down, she escapes from her own inner turmoil by telling herself “ Its okay, moms always right.I was able to go to school and make so many friends, and meet Miss Miorine, all because of mom. So she has to be right. She has to be….

And once again, when she see’s just how horrified Miorine is with her response, shes left all alone with her thoughts. I feel like deep down she beginning to realize that the mindset of “move forwrad, gain two” isn’t working as well as it should. She’s inching closer at loser more and more of the things she values the more she moves forward. \

Her dreams.

Her friends.

Her future.

my personal feeling on the subject is that they prioritize overly complex accessorizing over clarity of concept, and are unwilling to stray from a hyperspecific and incredibly bland base. almost all genshin and vtuber designs have the same handful of body types - all skinny except for maybe a fat rack - and almost all of them are extremely pale. they all have identical 'anime' face shapes, and any and all variation in facial structure is eye shape.

the overly complex nature of the outfits/surface level aesthetics paired with the copy and paste nature of the underlying bodies and faces leads to this incredibly bizarre and somewhat paradoxical design phenomenon where every individual design has a ton happening in it but this makes them all feel more generic, not less. it all just ends up as visual noise especially when you get one or more of these designs next to each other. i also think a lot of them have really bad silhouettes and awkwardly proportioned outfits. I think the kids who grow up inspired to make art from these sort of artists are gonna end up preferring to put the cart before the horse in terms of character design.

With v-tubers its a bit different than genshin because a vtuber isnt really a character in a setting. but for genshin, especially when compared to the more mundanely and reasonably dressed npcs, the outfits are so overdesigned that they come across as actively immersion breaking to me. i havent played the game though i will say.

none of this is the end of the world, anyone who wants to draw a bunch of cluttered generic 'anime' stuff is free to do so. but i really do feel like it's a shame that art styles that have so little variation in body type, skin tone, and taste have such a large amount of cultural capital rn.

This chart is several years old and I've been in and out of the girlsekai community so I don't have the freshest recs, but some others:

What if you isekaied. What if you kept isekaing. What if you kept isekaiing the same exact year, as the same exact person, trapped in the same plot that would murder you (often brutally) on the exact same day? At some point you'd have to become a serial killer, right? Resetting Lady = Finally someone makes a girlsekai horror story

Some moony-eyed girl keeps dying during a zombie apocalypse and initially thinks it's some divine test of her devotion to her man. Except honestly. Is he worth this. Do I know this guy enough to warrant the trauma I've woken up to a thousand times. Survive Romance is shockingly more about friendship than anything

The first few chapters of My Mom Entered a Contract Marriage - you are the abused daughter of a fallen villainess - once the hottest royal bitch in the kingdom, she's now a commoner, an alcoholic, and extremely bitter. One day she wakes you up, screaming that she's burning. She's shocked you're alive, sobbing and begging your forgiveness. Tbh this is one that's more fun if you've read a lot of princess isekais, because fans will totally pick up on what happened, but her child cannot. Visual treat, I stopped reading because I don't trust artists like this to last long. But what a starter it was!

The lack of skvaders is particularly frustrating when you realize it forms the third point of a wonderful cryptid trifecta.

You got the jackalopes, which are rabbits with antlers.

And you got the wolpertingers, which are rabbits with antlers and wings.

And then… what? Do you escalate? That’s unbalanced, those two rabbit cryptids don’t have the same number of extra things, the wolpertinger is clearly the jackalope But More.

BUT with the skvader on the other side, balance is restored. Antler rabbit, winged rabbit, winged antler rabbit. It’s a classic Venn diagram of imaginary lapine beasts, and it’s only complete if you acknowledge the fucking skvader.
