my high horse is actually awesome and fast like the wind
what if--and stay with me here, I know this is ludicrous--but what if my computer connected to my bluetooth headphones, maintained that connection just fine, but then actually used the fucking things to play the audio I want to play
uuugh I should not have talked to my mom on the phone for so long. she's gotten a lot better and our relationship has improved beyond what I ever thought possible (as recently as 2017 or so, I was preparing to go no-contact), but it's still a thing that leaves me Stressed and Anxious afterwards and I just cannot afford that right now
i’m not going to call myself “the friend who’s too woke” or hedge around my opinion because this is my deeply considered belief: horror literature is the theater of disgust, and the disgust that drives the vast, vast majority of classic horror media from the 1890s-1940s—dracula, jekyll and hyde, king kong, nosferatu, the mummy, universal frankenstein, the wolf man, cthulhu, and more—is the exact disgust that drove the worldwide tide of violence in the 1930s and 40s, a tide that has never fully receded, and you have NO business adapting a piece of classic horror media if you aren’t willing to put in the work to identify what is portrayed as disgusting in that property and enter into some form of dialogue with it. if you don’t want your movie to be “about” race or class or gender or sexuality or ability, you’re free to choose a source material that isn’t already about that, but unluckily for you giant hypersexual apes do not exist in a vacuum
Indieweb!! It’s one of my favorite parts of the internet, and I recommend everyone joins. You can find my website at garfriend.me !
I've joined too! find me at https://maccadot.neocities.org/ :) this zine rocks!
I do not agree with veganism as a moral standard. If it is your personal moral stance, that is fine. If you think humans eating meat is inherently immoral, I don’t want to deal with you, you’re hopeless. Vegan ideology behaves more like a sect of evangelical Christianity than a dietary choice.
Veganism is better for the environment, but claiming that it's a morally superior choice ignores cultural and economic factors that make people eat animal products.
It is not inherently better for the environment. That is the thing. When you begin trying to explain that local, sustainably sourced animal protein is better for the environment than imported plant proteins that are farmed 3,500 miles away using slave labor, they start tuning you out. Down is better for the environment than polyester stuffing, leather is better for the environment than pleather. We should work on making animal agricultural practices more sustainable instead of trying to shame everyone into eating plant products that are also farmed unethically and unsustainably.
I've been trying to Do My Hobbies more, but for better and worse I tend towards things that are kind of expensive and therefore happen in bursts - mechanical keyboards is a great example. I use my daily driver everyday, but Doing Something with them tends to have a high cost, in both money and energy, so it happens every so often. fountain pens is a newer one I'm trying to nurture, and it's shaping up to be much the same, though now that I've bought my first bottle of ink (and a pack of cartridges) there will probably be a different flow as I get comfortable swapping cartridges and refilling the converter. but I will also be buying pens.
I'm also getting into vinyl, finally, something my husband's been doing for years. but now that we have a really nice set up for it, it's easier and also just Enjoyable to put records on. i'm still intimidated by them but I'm getting better the more I handle them. this is a nice one to develop bc a lot of records are cheap secondhand, it's fun to look through them at thrift stores, and you can listen to them whenever you want. anyway I just bought a cheap World/Inferno Friendship Society album off discogs bc that is my life now
hobbies are good and fun, it turns out. I'm trying to figure out how to do ones that are less cost-heavy, or at least operate on a different cost schedule. but mostly it's just nice to have things to occupy my brain away from Impending Baby

me: I've had a deeply frustrating morning where none of my hobbies are working but at least it's groceries day so I'll get to eat my safe food :)

Spin the wheel. That's who's trying to kill you.
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about a name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
Are you safe?
Absolutely not. I'm dead. 100% dead.
I might stay alive, but it'll be a really close thing.
I'll take some hits, for certain, but I should be okay in the end.
A few attacks might get through, but nothing concerning.
The attacker might be able to get in one lucky hit. If that.
I am the opposite of worried. I'm 100% safe.
…Look. I've tried picturing this. But I honestly don't know how to answer.
(I've run this poll twice before, expanding it significantly for the second run. With about a year passed since that second run, I thought it was time to add another couple hundred names to the list and have another go.)

apple is incredibly fucked but at least when i was using it an uninstalled app never hijacked my fucking game files and rendered the cornerstone of my mental health unusable
I taught my kid that swear words (important note: this does not include derogatory names for groups of people) are just words that can carry a social consequence. When you are a child, this consequence isn’t on you, as much as it is on your parents, who are responsible for you. As such, parents usually just ask their kids not to swear. Instead of that, I told him to ask me before he swore so I could explain the potential social consequences and we could make the decision together. So far, he’s asked a handful of times if he could swear at Trump while we watched the news. I found this perfectly acceptable, so he got to say “Fuck trump”. Once when he dislocated his knee, he asked to swear - I said yea, he yelled “HOLY SHIT OUCH” and I asked if it made him feel better, he said it did. Once in traffic someone almost hit us and he asked to swear, I said yes - he said “That guy is an ASSHOLE” and I was like, yeah. 100% he was. He’s never asked to swear at a time that I felt was inappropriate. I have 0 regrets about this parenting decision.

bought my first vinyl today! it won't be here for a while but: project more physical media is go. I do have some records that my husband got me as gifts, but this feels like My First Record Purchase
I also got an open source music player set up on my computer, which I've been wanting to do for ages but without any music to put in it it felt silly? but since my vinyl came with a digital download, now I've got something to play
also thinking about why I'm gravitating towards vinyl rather than CDs and honestly. I just think records are nicer physical objects. I'm not actually an audiophile, so it's really about the object interaction for me and vinyl wins out there. sorry CDs, I still love you
