Do not fear.
"he can't write women" is crazy because its not like women are aliens or whatever but i guess men dont see women as people so it all adds up huh!!!!
perhaps i am missing something but i just dont understand how this is an issue that is struggled with by men. i know i answered my own question above but sometimes i'm floored by the stupidity of it yknow.
and then these guys will sit at the top of best selling lists and be considered giants of the genres they write for. its fine i guess
"A man once asked me — it is true that it was at the end of a very good dinner, and the compliment conveyed may have been due to that circumstance — how I managed in my books to write such natural conversation between men when they were by themselves. Was I, by any chance, a member of a large, mixed family with a lot of male friends? I replied that, on the contrary, I was an only child and had practically never seen or spoken to any men of my own age till I was about twenty-five. “Well,” said the man, “I shouldn’t have expected a woman [meaning me] to have been able to make it so convincing.” I replied that I had coped with this difficult problem by making my men talk, as far as possible, like ordinary human beings. This aspect of the matter seemed to surprise the other speaker; he said no more, but took it away to chew it over. One of these days it may quite likely occur to him that women, as well as men, when left to themselves, talk very much like human beings also." - Dorothy L. Sayers: Are Women Human? (1938)

Stop says the red light, go says the green
Wait says the yellow light, twinkling in between.
KNEEL, SAYS THE DEMON LIGHT WITH ITS EYE OF COAL SAURON KNOWS YOUR LICENSE PLATE AND STARES INTO YOUR SOUL
THIS IS ALWAYS FUNNY
@irritatedlifeguard I agree with your tags.
She is very lonely
i am half blind. on my eighteenth birthday, a freak accident left me with a slashed retina, a temporary eye patch and a permanent loss of 86% on my right eye. i don't talk about it much, and apart from the inability to drive a car, placing my notebook next to the desk instead of on it once in a while, and making me truly abysmal at beer pong, it has not impacted my life much.
except for the bittersweet fact that i can never show people how breathtakingly beautiful the world looks when you eyesight is fractured straight through the middle. i close what my opitician calls my good eye and the world explodes in colour, every pinprick source of light spreading out into iridescent flares into all directions culminating in bright circles at the edge of my vision. every star, every streetlight, multiplying into a tenfold symphony of colour and light. it's so overwhelmingly beautiful. how can i ever explain this to people? that when they find out and look at me with pity they should be envious instead. what an immense privilege, to be able to look at the world and see it too.
i called my parents today to chat, because sunday is my call people on the phone and chat day, and basically the first thing my dad said was "you're welcome for the tummy time btw." which was slightly sabotaged by my mom saying "no, he taught himself how to roll over really young because it let him follow liz around." which is actually really sweet. imagine that your two children are The Spider That Can Crawl Anywhere and The Wheel That Relentlessly Follows.
i have been shaving my head for several months now and im an old hand at most of the weirdness that comes with it. ive seen so many strange things - a beanie torn in half after i tried brute force yanking it off my stubble, strangers hands gripping my head like a sort of fleshy bowling ball, c-beams glittering in the dark by the tanhauser gate.
but still, sometimes, things surprise me. and i was surprised today. because today an old man approached me at the park. and he said, you know, im a pediatrician.
which is already a weird start to a conversation, because i didnt know that. and maybe i should have just rolled with it, but instead i went
wait. i dont know that. why did you think i knew that?
which didn't even put him slightly off balance.
cuz you're bald, he said, so confidently that i didnt even question it until the conversation was over. now. i was - i was over there, sitting -
and he gestured across the park to a giant pile of soft dirt that had an almost cartoonishly exaggerated ass print on it which derailed me for the second time. right? because whoever sat on that dirt, clearly, had an ass like two coconuts being fired out of a spanish cannon. whereas this man had an ass that could probably only be detected with powerful scientific instruments. i told him this in more succint terms by simply saying that was clearly not his buttprint.
now at this point we'd gotten derailed twice, and as unflappable as he'd been the first time, he was starting to get a little defensive. so he said perhaps someone with a large butt sat down after i got up, and i said why are you lying about where you were sitting, and he said why would i do that? and i said if i knew, i wouldnt be asking, and he said fine, i was driving by - and i said why didn't you just say you were driving by?!?!?!?! and he said because i didn't want you to think i was the kind of crazy person that would just stop his car to tell a stranger in a park that he, as a pediatrician, could tell that your parents REALLY cared about tummy time!
then he left. angrily. he actually stomped back to his car. i dont know when i started laughing but i didnt stop until i got home. my voice is still all scratchy right now. ive been in a little bit of a writing funk but i had to get this down while i could still remember it so perfectly.
and as a tangent, i cannot emphasize enough the benefits of going outside and interacting with the public. it is a constant source of joy. every place on earth is the weirdest place on earth. i will never be able to write a character as fascinating as the people i run into at the park. but god help me, i have to try.
op thank you for explaining in the tags because I had no idea what the fuck that meant
I don't know if you, oh tagger, were meaning actual bones, or just teeth, but it's such a pet peeve of mine that I'm going to plow ahead under the assumption that you meant teeth
Teeth are NOT bones. They're not even remotely related to bones, and have completely different compositions and cross sections.
Pet peeve alleviated, for now.
Heeheee, it’s always fun to air a pet peeve! Thankfully, I am not unkind to pets.
Your assumption is indeed incorrect, and you are also missing some information. Some of the information can be gathered by reading the tags you highlighted again, and processing it with your knowledge about bones.
What is different about the bones of “really young” children? (This information is also gestured at in the original post: skulls of small people are upsettingly soft.)
You are also missing information about something that is sometimes called “dentofacial orthopedics.” These are corrective orthodontics, surgeries, and other procedures that include remodelling bones - usually the jaw and palate. Mostly done on children.
Some of these procedures are detectable enough to show up in the shape of a mouth, or on one’s yearly x-ray. You can apparently read certain parts of my dental history from my jaw shape and palate - and if you are actually informed, you can infer some other things about me from that!
"chewable" has got to be one of my all time favourite words for things like books and stories and themes because it completely does away with the framework of "good" or "bad" etc wrt a work and focuses instead on the amount of visceral desire it inspires in you to put it in your mouth and move it around and feel and taste it and work at it with your teeth for a long time like a dog. there's something there to get at and chew on there's substance you can work on and gnaw at. which is much more aligned to my experience of a piece of literature (e.g.) being "interesting" to me than words like "good" or "meaningful" or whatever ever have been
A crucial part of the bookstore experience is saying hi to all the books you’ve already read
idk if i told the full story on here but i signed up for a research study where they were testing a new opioid, and it was supposed to be up to 5 injections increasing the dose to see what people could tolerate
i got the first dose and almost immediately fainted. they had to call in a whole medical team and it was a huge fucking deal
i was kicked out of the study and got a phone call later where they were supposed to tell me what the drug was, so i could avoid it in the future. they told me it was saline water. a placebo. i fainted from the placebo effect.
anyway, it's been a few months and i just got an email from the same department asking me to be a research participant in a new study: testing the effects of open-label placebo.
open label placebo is when the subjects and the researchers all know it's a placebo. they're testing the power of my mind. my power to imagine anything.
i like to think that they chose me for this specifically based on their past experience with me. "get the guy who fainted like a little bitch boy from saline water." anyway i just submitted all my info and i'm looking forward to getting started.
It’s Smaugust! I did a bunch of dragon commissions last year, so get ready for a month of lovely, lovely wyrms~
I'm reading a short story set in ancient Rome and one of the characters just said "Discord gnaw your entrails." That was an interesting mental image until my brain caught up and reminded me that no, those Romans did not have access to modern social media.
To turn off this feature in Discord, go to the Settings Menu, then select Advanced Setttings, then My Entrails, where you can adjust the Gnaw setting to your personal preference.

Languages tend to peak at their word for butterfly. Never seen 2 that are the same, either. Papillon. Mariposa. Borboleta. Fluture. Vlinder. Schmetterling. Pillangó. Babochka. Farfalla. Sommerfugl. Perhonen. Farasha. Titali. Chōchō. Nabi. Húdié. Buom buom. Great job guys, i really mean it.
Joy and whimsy detected! This post is joyful and whimsical 🦋
Me trying to say something to my partner about some cool fanart I just saw on my dash.
Him: back up back up, what the FUCK is Mouse Effect.
Lizardsex I love you...
The burning question of course is whether everyone is mice, or just the humans. Like are the salarians little frogs or is it Mice and Mice With Blue Tentacles???
sorry im absolutely too floored by the fact you just called me 'lizardsex' to give you an answer
... I see now your name is probably Lizards Exposed and not in fact Lizard Sex Posed.
This exact phenomenon is why there’s now a hyphen in my url.
