Wishing everyone a safe and fruitful Christmas š
āResponsibility to yourself means refusing to let others do your thinking, talking, and naming for you; it means learning to respect and use your own brains and instincts; hence, grappling with hard work. It means that you do not treat your body as a commodity with which to purchase superficial intimacy or economic security; for our bodies to be treated as objects, our minds are in mortal danger. It means insisting that those to whom you give your friendship and love are able to respect your mind. It means being able to say, with Charlotte Bronteās Jane Eyre: āI have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all the extraneous delights should be withheld or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.āā
āOn Lies, Secrets, and Silence: Selected Prose 1966ā1978: Claiming an Education,ā Adrienne Rich
no other person on this planet was made for you, they were made for themselves. love is all about choices. no one is going to be perfect for you, and i think we need to stop raising everyone on the belief that someone out there, just one other person in the whole world, wasĀ āmade for youā because it isnāt true. no one is made for you, besides you. other people belong to themselves. if you want to make it work with someone, itās about hard work, understanding, compassion, communication, and choice
wear your favourite outfit with your tallest shoes. order that ridiculous drink and ask the server to add espresso. run that extra mile and see the river. make your favourite breakfast and add more flavour. clean your room with ghibli music in the background. do your homework with your feet on your desk. live life to its fullest extent, but don't push off your responsibilities. find your balance. dont settle for mediocre. take care.
one day you will wake up in the morning feeling calm and content in every corner of your body. you will spend the day doing things that remind you that your life is not perfect, but its little details make it wonderful all the same. you will visit places youāve come to love, the little bakery, the library, the old bookstore, and the park, where you have picnics every weekend. you will paint often, read piles of new books, take candid photographs, bake your own bread, make your own strawberry jam, and write your own stories. your home will be cozy and welcoming, with plants, cushions, warm lighting and a fluffy cat that sleeps on your lap. there will be flowers and fruit trees in the garden, and a seat where you can read and watch the clouds, surrounded by sunlight and the sounds of nature. the things you once cried about are so far away in your memory that you barely think about them anymore. and you will sleep at night to ease the good kind of tiredness, the kind you feel on summer evenings after a day at the beach.
good morning to people with sweatshirts for universities they never attended, people with a collection of empty notebooks, people with niche academic interests no one else seems to care about, people who never outgrew their middle school mythology phase, people who canāt seem to make a dent in their TBR piles, and the guy who does edits on Wikipedia

Shopping for laptops fucking sucks ācause I donāt know shit about computers. Iāve never had a computer with a functional webcam or microphone or the ability to play computer games made later than 2005 or a speaker that could play anything loud enough to hear from more than a foot away. How the hell should I know what I want?!
wow that would be such useful advice if only desktop PCs were small and portable and did not require desk tops on which to place them and I could take them with me when I traveled
I know this is a haha funny post, but for anyone who needs it, here's a quick-and-dirty of what you're most likely going to see while shopping for a computer/laptop (w/Examples)!
Cores/Intel Cores (Ex. i3, i5, i9)= Processing Speed= how fast your internet and other programs run. More cores is better.
Hard [Disk] Drive(HDD)/Solid State Drive(SSD) (Ex. 250GB, 480GB, 2TB)= How much you can store on your computer (files and apps and programs). A Terabyte(TB) is 1,000 Gigabytes.
*HDD is cheaper and more storage while SSD is faster, more durable, and uses less energy.
Memory/RAM(Random Access Memory) (Ex. 4GB, 8GB, 16GB) = How many different things your computer can do At The Same Time.
Ex. A computer with 4GB of RAM will probably shit itself if you try to play a game with with the internet open.
Video/Graphics Cards (Ex. NVIDIA, Intel HD Graphics, AMD) = How much visual complexity your computer can handle without throwing a tantrum. Only important if you play video games, do digital art, or watch a lot of movies on your computer. (When you're watching a video and it pixelates and lags when the action stuff happens, that's a bad/small graphics card)
Also theĀ āavoid refurbished computersā tip is dead wrong.
āRefurbishedā means itās been in a technicianās hands recently and canāt be sold as new. Thatās it. Thatās all. In the US the FTC makes it illegal to sell something new if itās been sold to an end user, so by definition a lot of perfect, ready-to-go hardware must beĀ ārefurbishedā in order to sell it again, no matter the circumstances.
Reasons a machine might be a refurb:
- Customer bought the item, decided they didnāt like the color, and returned it
- Customer bought the item, couldnāt figure out how to turn it on, and returned it
- Retailer opened the box for some reason and lost some of what gets shipped inside (manuals, cables, charger) and returned it
- Company bought 100 computers but went out of business before they could be installed or used
- Customer got a replacement for a damaged computer under warranty, and the manufacturer fixed what was wrong with the old machine and is now selling it as a refurb
I HAVE PERSONALLY WITNESSED ALL OF THESE SCENARIOS
Bottom line: ārefurbishedā hardware has been repaired, tested, cleaned, and renewed back to original specifications by a trained technician. If anything, itās probably MORE reliable now that itās been doubly-tested.Ā
All responsibly refurbished equipment comes with a factory warranty... the only refurbs I would avoid are items sold āas-isā without warranty. Thatās dangerous unless you know what youāre doing, like buying stuff for parts.
A lot of my most reliable hardware -- servers, laptops, tablets -- were bought as refurbished goods at huge savings. When I go shopping for a new thing I always look at the refurbished options first.Ā
tl;dr: Refurbished is great!
tell people how you feel about them. literally. if someone made you smile today, tell them. if a thought crosses your mind about how much someone means to you, tell them. iām 99.9% sure the recipient will be overjoyed to know that they were thought of in such a positive light. your words and your actions make a difference.
man the west just looooves thinking that every non-western country and nation is so underdeveloped and so primitive and so in need of help like this just reeks of racism and pretty much just the inability to even humour the idea that the countries that the west loves to think are below them are, in fact, better.
anywho props to all of the countries in africa.
you are allowed to be proud of the victories that no one else can see. like showering without completely hating your body, not breaking into tears at the thought of the future, talking yourself out of a dark mindset, calming yourself down in public, or like waking up every single day and choosing life. be proud of the progress no matter if it is visible for others or not. youāre doing great, keep up the good work!

The worst part of human adulthood is being your own zookeeper
Like... i have to make sure my meals are nutritionally balanced... i have to make sure that the space i occupy is big enough, and interesting enough, and provide enrichment to make up for the lack of novelty... i have to make sure i get exercise... i'm not qualified for this
Why would you abandon this in the tags?Ā
How many people can say they have played rugby with a Beluga whale? š³ š
Iām putting this back on my radar. I want this life
I believe this is Hvaldimir, who, get this, is believed to be a defected Russian spy. Literally.
He showed up in Norway in April 2019 wearing a camera harness labeled āequipment of St. Petersburgā, has tried pulling ropes on boats, is obviously very familiar with people and prefers to hang with people. While we know Russia has marine mammal government programs (the US does too, but itās bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions), the extent of their programs is not declassified like the US Navyās are.
He likes to play fetch and be scratched around the blowhole.
He has taken a diverās knife out of the scabbard, played with underwater drones, stolen a go pro from a kayaker, and other mischief. Notably, it has been said by the Murmansk Marine Biology Institute, who may have been who trained Hvaldimir, that seals are better equipped to be polar military animals, as they have high professionalism that belugas lack.
Anyhow, enjoy Hvaldimir (the name combines the Norwegian word for whale, Hval, with Vladimir, as in Putin), the defected Russian spy whale.

Hvaldimir is my fave, I love it when photos and videos of him show up in the newspapers. There was some discussion about bringing him to a sanctuary because of how socialised he is, but since he can clearly feed himself, I think those plans were scrapped

Gentle reminder that often creativity decides to hibernate for a bit.
Itās okay. Ā Youāre not broken, youāre resting, and much like spring, creativity comes back.
yes offense but someone who isnt well versed in social justice discourse and has somewhat ignorant views of that stuff but who still genuinely cares about other people and actually does something to help them even if they dont necessarily āunderstandā them will litchrally always be superior to someone who thinks of other peoples suffering as an intellectual exercise and is only interested in developing their knowledge of theory and having all the Correct Opinions to look smart online or in their undergrad philosophy class lol
