Currently rereading The Hobbit, and I swear it's like Tolkien took every antisemitic stereotype and caricature that was being used to dehumanize Jews during this time and put them onto the dwarves but turned them on its head to make them traits to be admired. I already knew he was a badass for telling the Nazis to go fuck themselves, but this just makes me love his work more.
It gets better.
Jews of the time still criticized Tolkien for having all his dwarves have all those characteristics. So when he wrote The Lord of the Rings, he specifically wrote Gimli as a noble warrior who has no interest in gold and cares more for artistry and beauty.
There's this bit from Fellowship of the Ring:
whats significant about this passage is that Galadriel's words here- "Dark is the water"- are an exact mirror of words Gimli himself said about Khazad-dûm in an earlier chapter. So when the Fellowship leaves Lorthlórien, Galadriel has no gift for Gimli, and asks what gift the Elves could give him. His response:
and then there's this bit about the Glittering Caves in The Two Towers. It's not a 180 of what was established in the Hobbit, but it builds on and fleshes out the Dwarves immensely and it's one of the most beautiful passages in the boom
Context: just after the siege of helm's deep when Legolas and Gimli are reunited after the battle, Gimli spent some time in the caves under the Hornburg, and this is what he has to say about it:
Gimli is absolutely my favorite of the fellowship, or at least everyone besides Frodo and Sam.
No but imagine if you met an immortal being and they told you in Biblical Hebrew about the time they visited the first and second temples and how magnificent they were
This is the best description I’ve heard for this method, I always thought it was bullshit because I never heard a description that actually explained how to do this other than “tap your head 20 times”.
I have anxiety-induced hissing, which sounds/feels different from sound-induced tinnitus (which I have also experience). Sound-based tinnitus actually sounds like you’re “hearing” something in your ears, whilst the hissing I have feels like it’s “inside my head”, if that makes sense. But this technique still helps!!
Here’s a visual I found because I couldn’t understand the instructions well
My ringing just went away for the first time in years. What is this blissful quiet.
wait wait i gotta try this, i don’t think i’ve had Actual Silence since i was like 5
HOW THE FUCK
Reblogging to save a life, and also because, even if you don’t have tinnitus, this is totally worth trying if you like new sensory experiences.
World historical loser
the problem with movie remakes is that they always remake something that was already good, meaning at worst you ruin it and at best your remake is largely redundant. to make a truly good remake you need to start with source material that is absolute dogwater. ignore the pull of nostalgia. redeem the sins of moviemaking past.
GUYS GUYS GUYS
THEY RELEASED THE COYOTE VS ACME TRAILER !!!!!
WE WON !!!
sorry the looney tunes movie that got buried by a massive company for corporate purposes is about fighting back against a massive company trying to bury incidents for corporate purposes?
hey everyone "I" have something to show "you"
there is no single argument against including trans women in sports that doesn't boil down to "women aren't supposed to be good at this" and it's fucking insane to me that every woman in the world isn't up in arms about the way this issue has laid institutional misogyny bare to the bone
