Unless you were a tech at NASA back in the day, when one time some hydrogen a) escaped in a particular building, and b) caught on fire. This was extremely difficult because hydrogen does NOT burn on the visible spectrum humans evolved to see (and flee). Rather, it technically does, but it’s so pale that in practice, no one could see it. Additionally, pure hydrogen burns without smoke and with so little ambient heat that you can’t really sense it till you walk into it. So, per the lore, for a few days all the techs in that building just walked around brandishing brooms in front of them like lances. If your broom lit on fire, congrats! You have located more burning hydrogen! Do not proceed!

I read in The Library Book by Susan Orlean that a similar near-invisible flame was produced when a California library burned. The firefighters could barely see it, and one, talking about it like thirty years later, was still moved almost to poetry by the beautiful terrible sight.

I’m from here. I do not know where you live but lifelong Appalachians disappear into the mountains all the time here in the Alleghenies. My grandfather was missing for 4 days once during a hunting trip and my uncle’s best friend has been missing for about a year. You’re not smarter than the mountains even if you swear you know them, even if you’ve lived with them your entire life. It could truly happen to anyone at any time.

when i was a child, my parents told me our houseplant would die of lack of sunlight. i was so young i don’t even remember this, but apparently, my response to this was starting to carry the plant around like an emotional support stuffed animal. whenever my family went outside i would hold the pot on my head to make it reach the sun better. i wasn’t in school yet, didn’t have any exposure to the lessons on caring they give in elementary, i don’t remember my thought process - but i can guess. kids integrally care about things, even tiny bugs and inanimate plants. humans care.

HUGE but tiny thing I did for myself was install a website blocker. It’s super simple to turn off and on so it won’t stop you if you need to see or be somewhere but if you have severe ADHD like I do, having that one little prompt that goes “hey do you REALLY wanna go to Twitter right now? Are you sure?” is just enough of a deterrent to remind myself “oh yeah! Why would I do that?” It’s not a cure-all but damn if I’m doing homework it’s quite useful.

This is the one I use! It’s for Firefox, not sure if there’s any Chrome ones (but I highly recommend switching to Firefox anyway)
