Tunic!
The iron hook slid free from his shoulder with a wet metallic shriek. Something black and arterial splashed across the stones between them.
The torturer stepped back instinctively. Not out of mercy. Out of surprise. The prisoner laughed. Not loudly. Worse than loudly. Softly. Like he had just remembered a private joke older than civilization.
“You still think pain is a language,” he said.
Another blow. This time across the mouth. Teeth cracked. Blood sheeted down his chin in long ribbons.
The interrogator hissed through clenched teeth. “Tell me where God went.”
The prisoner turned his head slowly. There was blood in his smile now.
“There are organisms,” he said, “living beneath Antarctic ice that have never seen the sun and have still learned how to eat.”
The room had gone very still. Somewhere in the dark, machinery groaned.
The interrogator grabbed him by the jaw hard enough to bruise bone.
“You think this makes you immortal?”
The prisoner spat a clot of red onto the floor between them.
“No,” he whispered.
“I think it makes you temporary.”
The torches flickered.
For one impossible second, the interrogator became aware of his own pulse. The heat in his veins. The soft wetness of his eyes. The damp animal electricity inside every living thing. The prisoner watched realization bloom across his face and smiled wider, blood running between his teeth.
“You cannot threaten a creature from the dirt,” he said, “with returning to the dirt.”
— excerpt from Shit I Just Made Up To Exemplify How All This Tumblr Prose Sounds
I'm gonna think about this post for weeks.
I haven't written in years. Decades, probably. I know I don't do it for the "right" reasons, and anyway, nobody ever seemed to be able to find the time to read anything I sent them.
But when I do write, I sound like this. I always have. Because I wrote to impress my father, an unempathic and unhappy man who admires literature but believes he knows more about it than he does, and so my writing was tailored to his taste. It was the only thing I ever got praised for, even though it always came paired with unsolicited critique.
I recognize now that I only ever wrote so that I would be told I was good at something.
Sometimes when things are bad, I liked to imagine I could write again. After all, we live in a time where people are reading often and all kinds of books - maybe this time, I could find readers.
My career was the only other thing in my life I was ever told I was very good at; It collapsed in 2021, and I haven't heard anyone say that to me since. Sometimes I liked imagining that writing could be a way I would get to hear it again.
Again, I know that's not the right reason to make art. I should be content to make it for nobody except myself, and that should be enough - i should be satisfied that the story is now extant in the world, that I have read it should be enough for me. Alas I am a flawed person; I need to feel like I am doing a good job at something.
So, in a way, I am grateful to OP for this post. I can't imagine how destroyed I would be if I had taken a chance and posted a story, only to have eight thousand people all agree that its some kind of eye-melting slop. I would rather write and share nothing, than have thousands of people all casually laughing about how bad my writing is. OP has spared me from that.
It hurts, yes. But I am grateful all the same. Because now I know how much worse it could be, and I understand what I am saving myself from.
i think you're reading a lot more into my post than i actually put there!
if you look through the replies and tags, you'll find you're far from the only person who felt personally targeted— but you'll also find plenty of people saying they genuinely liked the original excerpt and wanted to read more. that's a good thing!! clearly, there's an audience for that style, and i don't have any interest in arguing otherwise!
what bothers me isn't the vocabulary, or even the (imo overly) lyrical prose itself. when i say “tumblr prose” i mean a particular trend where nearly every sentence feels optimized to sound profound rather than communicate something. beautiful prose isn't the problem! ambiguity isn't the problem either. my issue is when atmosphere begins cannibalizing the storytelling instead of supporting it.
with the original sample, even as the author, i came away knowing very little beyond the mood. i don't really know who these people are, why god is apparently gone, why the antarctic organisms are relevant, or what materially changed over the course of the conversation. there are lots of striking individual lines, but they don't really build into a coherent or particularly interesting whole. it feels like each sentence is trying to be The Line people screenshot and say "this goes hard," rather than working altogether to tell a story. that's ultimately what i was parodying, not people who enjoy this style, and certainly not people who just wanna write! just a trend in online prose that i personally find frustrating as an avid reader
i also don't think you should let one stranger's lighthearted and very personal opinion convince you that you shouldn't write! if anything, the replies to my post should tell you the opposite! there are plenty of people who love this style and wanted more of it. i'm just one person with one set of tastes! i genuinely do hope you keep writing!
There was a guy I used to follow on Tumblr who was big into book reviews - nice guy, but he left with the porn bans in 2018, which was a shame. Anyway, he would critique both the stories and the book covers, as the mood struck.
And for a while, reading his posts started to make me really paranoid about my own writing, and to think anything I wrote could be dissected to that level. I almost never saw him compliment a cover, either - those he tended to only post when he disliked them, and it was a lot of covers where I actually liked the style.
Anyway, then one day he posted two covers he'd made for his own WIP, and I'll be honest lads, I thought they were dog shit. Bland, tonally mismatched to the genre, just bad. Absolute casserole. And instantly I was like, oh yeah. You're eloquent and passionate and good at critique, and you're also one person with human opinions that are going to diverge from mine. And that's okay.
And instantly, I no longer felt any insecurity about my own work from him lol.
Anyway: excellent work OP, I know exactly what you mean
The problem with using "guns aren't cool" and "guns aren't toys" as part of your gun control messaging is that guns are very obviously cool toys and everybody knows this. People go to shooting ranges or shoot cans in the woods for the same reason they play golf or Magic the gathering. It's playing toys!! Dangerous toys, but still toys.
And when you include blatant falsehoods in your messaging, now nobody believes you when you talk statistics on gun use in domestic violence or other serious issues.
Maybe I'm an outlier in the pro gun control group, because I'm a MechE and I love machines that perform a precise function with clever bits of steel, and i went to a summer camp when i was 11 or 12 where they had a shooting range with dinky little .22 rifles, but like
I can't be the only one who understands this, right?
"Guns aren't cool toys" -> obvious nonsense to millions of people, just a statement so embarrassingly false that it weakens the rest of your argument
"Guns shouldn't be cool toys" -> a statement that a lot of people will disagree with, but it's a self-consistent point of view that a person could reasonably have and argue for
I mean, for a certain definition of "toy", sure, they are toys in the way that a backhoe or a welding torch or an M80 are toys.
By which I mean, the kind of toy where if your angry dad said, "You need to respect this, it's not a toy!" he probably had a pretty good reason.
Lotta people treat them as though they were the golf club or pack of magic card kind of toy, which is why a hell of a lot of people in this country get shot on accident.
Restaurant I work in doesn't allow guns on the premises, recently we had to ban a customer after he accidentally discharged the gun he was carrying in the parking lot.
We've never had anybody accidentally discharge a pack of magic cards or a set of golf clubs in front of the valet station, to my knowledge.
Like... I don't know, the thing I find weird about US gun culture is not that people find them cool, because obviously they are, it's that there is this sort of attitude that they are more like magic cards then like a chainsaw or a nail gun or a car which a lot of people have, a sort of push for a world where carrying a weapon around in any public place you go to has no connotations or dangers and only the whacky liberals think it would.
to be fair, people also treat cars like toys (not just in the US!), and this is the cause of a lot of problems. Perhaps it is just that when so many people have something and you see it everywhere and it isn't hard to get it doesn't feel very special, even if it's very dangerous.
In fact, a very apt comparison! You probably have a history of several dozen near misses occurring between cars and pedestrians in your parking lot as well, but what are you gonna do, tell people they have to be careful with their cars? Tell them they can't have a car just because they've almost hit someone a couple times? That's crazy talk.

Found a great (free) documentary on the Freedom House Ambulance Service here- https://www.wqed.org/freedomhouse/ (has captions too)!
I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve heard about this. like for years I’ve been thinking “imagine if the police were in charge of ambulances and firefighting, all the horrible problems that would cause, wouldn’t it be better if they were a separate thing, etc” as a way to better understand/explain the fundamental problems with the existence of police. that framing was part of what made me start to understand why my friends were saying “ACAB” and “abolish the police”. I had no idea it was literally once historically like that and not just a hypothetical tbh

I love it when they make games to upset Brennan specifically
This man has typecast himself into a role so specific that he can't do normal Game Changer eps any more. Any Game Changer ep he's in has to torture him personally or it's a waste of perfectly good Brennan. Pray for him.
Dance fucker dance
#the moment from that first screenshot is when i checked the time and went#''we are 3.5 minutes into this episode and brennan is already trying to kill sam with his mind''#dropout
I also love it on Game Changer where he gets momentarily furious at another player and avoids starting shit with them by just taking a lil walk around the set to calm down. He got so upset.
#game changer is a show about brennan lee mulligan and sam reich trying to kill each other in progressively more unhinged ways
And Breaking News is a game about Grant O'Brien and Sam Reich trying to kill each other in progressively more unhinged ways. Sam is picking so many battles.
dropout is a studio of people all in spy vs spy level shenanigans with everyone else at all times for our entertainment
You can tell that they used to be youtubers. It's in the bones of the company.
For me this isn't even about empathy or sympathy (though there's value in those as well), it is just straight-up a human rights thing. Once you have decided that there is *any* category of human that can be treated as less-than-human you've said that humanity is conditional, and so are the rights that come with it. You've already lost, you've granted the fascists their point because *you agree with them* that some people don't deserve to be treated like humans.
This is, unironically, why I’m pro-life as well as deeply opposed to the Trump administration and especially how it’s treating immigrants.
All human beings have human rights. Every abuse starts with someone deciding one part of that statement isn’t true: that either a particular group of humans doesn’t count as “real” humans, or that not all humans have base human rights that should always be respected.
If you say the immigrant, the queer person, the fetus, the criminal, the woman, the disabled person, the person of a different race or class or nationality than yours, etc. isn’t human or doesn’t deserve the same human rights as everyone else? You have already agreed with the fascists. You have accepted their basic premise. And you can therefore become complicit in truly terrible things.
It's not just Fascism, it's all totalitarian ideologies. People use the specter of Fascism as a blanket for all types of repressive governments and actions when in fact it can and does come from all political sides.
Especially when the left starts to make rumblings about killing billionaires, eating the rich or starts desiring the unsheathe the guillotine once again, not recognizing that those were terrible times.
The question becomes, do you want the boot off the neck or do you want your boot on the neck?
Reminder that when pro-lifers comment on my posts, I donate to an abortion fund in their name.
Saying that fetuses have rights equal to humans is completely contradictory, actually, because fetal rights are necessarily asserted only at the expense of someone else's rights. In order for fetuses to have the same rights as humans, you are eliminating the right to bodily autonomy of people who can become pregnant.
Pro-lifers, feel free to come back and argue about that with me, today is payday and I worked twenty hours of overtime last week.
Everbody else: if you would like to see a critical analysis of the concept of revolutionary capital punishment from someone who is not attempting to downplay the fascism that is the specific subject of the original post, here is "Against the logic of the guillotine."
Being pro-life in the US right now is explicitly supporting the state-sanctioned deaths of people who were denied abortions.
Being pro-life in the US right now is explicitly supporting surveilling pregnant people and limiting their movements to prevent them from seeking medical care.
Being pro-life in the US right now is explicitly supporting the end of medical privacy
Being pro-life in the US right now is explicitly supporting making children to carry and deliver pregnancies that derail their lives and educations and endanger them.
Being pro-life in the US right now is explicitly supporting forcing rape survivors to live with the constant touch of their rapists until they are forced once again to endure sexual trauma in the form of an unwanted birth.
"Pro human rights" and "anti-abortion" are not beliefs that can coexist anywhere, in my opinion, but definitely not in the here and now.
Anyway. The National Network of Abortion Funds is at 2.1 million of its 2.5 million dollar goal for its may Fund-a-Thon. You can scroll through the participating funds to find ones that are further from their goal or need more support or especially focus on people in a community close to you.
"pro life" doesn't just mean that you value the "life" of the fetus.
It means you value the life of the fetus more than the life of the mother, and more than the concept of bodily autonomy which is necessary for survival.
If you're anti-abortion, you should also be pro-forced-organ-donation. While the donors are alive.
Sound unethical? Sound like an egregious overstep of the government? Sound like you want to make a determination of what your organs are used for?
Good. It should. Apply that energy to pregnancy.
We go forward.

We need an alternative to doesthedogdie cause they’ve started fucking paywalling warnings that include timestamps for triggering moments.
Like what the fuck
I just checked and
Need to read about trigger warnings? Please click the whimsical dog icon for more information!
I recommend Unconsenting Media. Not as comprehensive as DoesTheDogDie, but if sexual assault is a trigger for you, it’s a good resource
rbing again real quick--i and other(s?) have noted in other rbs that this is almost never done. it's for very few properties, and it's only for timestamped warnings that are done in-house, not by users.
there are still timestamps available for warnings on those same triggers for those same properties. just bc there's a paywall on something doesn't mean other comments and timestamps can't be posted or read for free on that property or that trigger.
see here:
i don't have an account and haven't paid for anything on the site, so all of those comments are what i'm seeing for free.
i had to search and search to find anything that had paywalls, and had to resort to looking at The Substance, as referenced here. i've been using the site regularly since the op posted and have never organically encountered a paywall on anything, including on very popular properties.
i don't see any reason to stop using the site--everything is still available for free. they just have added another way for some ppl to choose to pay some $ (in addition to ads), since this is a completely free service, and no website is free to maintain.
as an example, someone with the money could pay to see the timestamps, and then leave a free comment with the same timestamps for others if they wanted to.
I've seen this post on my dash a few times now and I want to boost this specific addition. I've emailed the owner of the site to get clarification on this, and I was told the motivation behind this. He wanted to start paying some people to memorize all 200+ triggers on the site, sit down and watch popular movies/shows to thoroughly analyze whenever any trigger pops up, and note down timestamps and details of them. Ads unfortunately do not cover this (they probably only cover the site's base upkeep), so the subscription service is specifically to pay these people. Community comments have never been paywalled and are still accessible.
He thanked me for my feedback when I expressed confusion and concern about the paywalled comments being mixed in with the free comments, and has since updated the site to make them clearly distinct, along with a preview of what the paid comments look like:
He was very transparent about it all and very kind. He also said this was his mistake and is trying to clear it up. Please continue to use DoesTheDogDie.com, it is an excellent resource and there is nothing else like it!
