With today's Firefly news I thought it was time to post this thing I wrote in 2016 inspired by it. It was bits and pieces that were supposed to become a song but never did so now I'm posting it as a poem. So if it feels unfinished it's because it is. XD

The Bride Dressed In Black

I am a bride, All dressed in black, Walking the aisle To my death.

My groom is a reaper, All dressed in black. His eyes are empty, And his skin is pale white.

He killed everyone I loved, So the audience Is just corpses Sat here to watch.

As we say our vows, Death do us part, The reaper just smiles, And says, “That won’t be long.”

Where did I go wrong? Why did it have to end like this? I’ve built my coffin when I said, “I do.”

I was a girl, All sad and lonely. He came along, And he was kind.

But then, He got possessive. My family is gone, I have no more friends, And this is my end.

“Do you, Bride in Black, take the Reaper as your lawfully wedded husband till death do you part?” “I do..” “Do you, Reaper, take the Bride in Black as your lawfully wedded wife till death do you part?’ “I do.” “I now pronounce you husband and wife; you may kiss the bride.”

The kiss of death, So bittersweet. The last kiss, Before I die.

I am a bride, Covered in red. My groom was a reaper That sentenced me to death.

2016 Writing Meme

I stole this as usual. =/

Total 2016 Word Count: I’m not entirely sure. I didn’t start writing again until mid-year and it was to pick back up on a WIP that has been sitting there and whimpering quietly for love. The fic is at a word count of 100,695 right now and I added ten chapters? I think? And I know I did a rewrite of what had already been posted.

Favorite Fic: Sanctuary Kansas. And after plugging away for so long on Skull’s Maw it’s shocking how short Sanctuary Kansas seems. It could probably do with a rewrite, but I am super proud of the plot and that it’s mostly canon compliant.

Hardest Fic: Dark Heart Dawning (second fave fic) This one took six or seven months to write and there are still parts of it that need work (like the chapter with Tracy and Kevin and Charlie in the hotel room desperately needs a rewrite). It’s also one of the few times I’ve used a beta and I discovered I don’t work well with sending things back and forth. Probably why I’ll never be a published in print book author. My beta was AMAZING and wonderful and lovely and excellent. I’m just a poo gas head with a weird writing process.

Do you plan to take prompts in 2017? Yes in fact I’ll probably beg and plead for them.

What was the best thing about 2016? That I started writing again after stopping for so long.

What was the worst thing about 2016? That the rest of my life was so turned upside down and hard with loosing my job and not finding solid full time work (still)

Any last thoughts for 2016? The Year of the Fire Monkey is NOT over. Hold tight until Jan 28th.

Comparison to 2015: Two fics in 2015 - I’ll Always Come When You Call - a gift for the superb beta I mentioned above which is why Charlie is dressed as a Ham for Halloween ala Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird. I wish this fic had more love.

Flicker and Glint - a Benny Lafitte centric dark fairytale about Purgatory. It never gets attention because it’s not a Benny/Dean fic and because I kill Andrea off pretty quickly. O_O

Plans for 2017: Finish my WIP. Write the sequel to The Crescent City Chronicles. It’s my super hero AU, and I wrote the outline and plot for the sequel on the plane flights over Christmas. Dean is The Hunter (super agility, speed and strength, fast healing, enhanced vision and hearing, superior fighting skills), Sam is Electro (ability to generate and manipulate electric energy, immunity to electricity) and Castiel is The Comet (morphs into a being made of dry ice, hot and freezing cold all at once. He has super strength and speed, and the ability to fly but his touch freezes and he’s unable to speak). The sequel will involve the heroes in the neighboring city of Angelus (Naomi, Hester and Hannah), some paperback novelist named Marv, and the origin of Sam and Dean’s powers.

I also want to write a Mad Max-esque Team Free Will thing, a Harry Dresden SPN cross over (finally) and a 101 Arabian Nights AU this year if I can. And the sequel to Ellie Arroway because we need to find out what happened to Gabriel and his ship. And.... ugh all the things I want to write.

taking stock of the writing in 2016

What did I accomplish this year?

The novel:

Finished the novel!

Then did a quick re-read, went back and did patchwork, adding in scenes and reworking some sub-plots.

Then did another read-through, revising sentences and fleshing out some scenes (the ending!).

Got 1/3 of the way through inputting that into the manuscript.

Short stories:

I wrote one new short story this year.

Did ground-up rewrites of two short stories.

I sold two stories this year; one was published in July, one is still forthcoming.

WIPs:

Got through a novelette-length draft of the sci-fi romance story I started last year.  Am now adding another plotline, and am not sure if I should hope that it takes it to novel-length or not.

Made no word-progress on Jason’s sci-fi fairytale retelling, but I have notes.

Started a Teachout short that needs more of something, not sure what yet.

Five pages of a weird mainstream YA thing that I may or may not ever look at again.

I wrote 3 pages of AU fanfic mashing up two of @lookninjas’ AU fanfics, resulting in what she dubbed “AU-ception.”

There is now 800 words of Garak/Bashir fanfic lurking in my Drive folders.  I would claim it will never see the light of day, but I said that last year about one of my poems, and guess what’s printed and got a stick figure drawn next to it right now?

I also wrote a thing in response to a meme that may or may not ever be a real story, but I put enough thought into it that I think it ought to count as something.

Poetry and miscellany:

There was also poetry this month.  I haven’t written this much poetry since college.

Scattered blog posts, probably some critique in there somewhere, and at least one fairly detailed character sketch, possibly two--I didn’t keep a running tally because revision seemed the name of the game this year.

I think I kept my goals from last year all right; my writing speed still bothers me from time to time, but I’m beating myself up less.  I’m doing better with the one-off calls, for the most part.  I did finish the book.

My goals for 2017:

Well, I’d like to have a revised draft of the novel ready to start being sent around, even if I haven’t got the query/outline/synopsis package done.

Poem and stick figure a day for all of January!

Keep sending things out, coping with rejection, blah blah blah (read: my life)

Honestly, I’m not sure how the work promotion is going to affect my writing.  I’m ... not nervous, exactly--I have found I work best when I have a schedule to work with and around--but it’s a thing I am aware of and keeping an eye on.  So I guess my goal is to figure that out as I keep working.  Maybe I’ll keep an actual log in my writing notebook again; that has worked really well for me in the past (I never think I’m writing enough, so word counts and writing logs are something I come back to over and over).

Favorite Fic: That’s like telling a parent to choose their favourite child.  I guess if I had to choose one, I’d have to go with On The Lemonade, only because it was my very first fic, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Hardest Fic: Rub Down, probably because I already had a clear idea of where I wanted my next fic to go, but I had to go through Rub Down to get there.  I’m proud of it, but I didn’t enjoy writing it as much as the others.  Thankfully, I can now enjoy reading it since I’m in the middle of writing the as-yet-unnamed part five.

Do You Plan to Take Prompts in 2017?

Gotta say, I’ve never filled a prompt.  Probably because I don’t do AUs, and I’ve never really even done canon divergence.  If anyone has an idea that could work within canon, I’d be willing to consider writing it.

What was the best thing about 2016?

Hmm... internet-wise it’d have to be that I started writing fanfic.  Overall, the Spouse and I bought our first ever house, which (if I have my way) will be our forever home.  Moving sucks, so I’d very much like to never do it again, but it was totally worth it.

What was the worst thing about 2016?

In the grand scheme of the world, so very many things went wrong.  Far too many bad things to list, and all awful.  Personally, my year wasn’t half bad.  I guess having to move twice in one year and ending up with the neighbours from Hell living downstairs from us was the worst.  I’m glad to be able to say the worst is behind me.

Any last thoughts for 2016?

I want to thank each and every person here who has encouraged me to keep writing.  If I were to try to tag you all, I’d inevitably forget someone and then I’d feel awful, so... you know who you are.  Every single person who told me to keep writing, who read my stuff and said something nice about it, who reassured me that spending an hour on a single sentence is still writing; thank you.  Your words mean more to me than you’ll ever know.

This might be the only thing I’ve ever been tagged in that I didn’t feel the urge to sabotage.  Don’t get used to it, I still don’t appreciate people telling me what to post, so future taggings will still fall victim to deliberate fuckery.  As always, the buck stops here.  I refuse to tag anyone, but if you write and haven’t been tagged yet and want to do this, consider yourself tagged.  You can blame me if it makes you feel better.
