It was utter chaos. Barty and Sirius were in the middle of a heated debate. Remus and Evan were also exchanging sharp words. Dorcas was glaring at everyone. Peter stood as far away from everyone as the room would allow. Pandora was busy stoking the walls and whispering to them, and he stood with James watching the fires blaze.
“Well, this is going well,” James murmured into Regulus’s ear. “Also, what is going on with Crouch’s hair?” Regulus couldn’t help the grin that spread across his face as he looked at Barty’s multicoloured hair, or at least what was left of it. Dorcas had either shaved or yanked out huge patches of his once-neat follicles. He looked utterly ridiculous and was taking offence each time Sirius’s eyes flicked up to it during their argument and let out an almighty snort.
“You know that secret Barty told us?” James nodded. “Well, I told Dorcas,” James chuckled beside him.
“Well, I can’t say I don’t think it was deserved after what he pulled.”
“Will everybody just stop!” Peter shouted from his corner, hands pressed over his ears. The room fell into absolute silence. “Thank you. Can we get this all sorted now so I can go see Penny before curfew?!” The silent room nodded in unison.
“Right, Remus, are you satisfied that no one is going to reveal your secret to anyone else, putting you in danger and more than likely getting you expelled from this school?” Peter’s tone hardened halfway through his speech. Remus took a step away from Evan, stretching his back, every vertebra cracking as he did so. Sirius left his spot in front of Barty and went to Remus’s side. A chair appeared beside Remus and helped him into it. Remus smiled sweetly up at him before turning to face the room, his eyes clouding with warning. He looked more wild than he had in that hidden passage where he’d dragged Regulus.
“I’ll trust them, yes.” Peter nodded, smiled and opened his mouth to continue, but Remus continued, cutting him off. “Be warned, one night a month I may turn into a beast, but that doesn’t mean I’m any less dangerous to you for the rest of the month. In fact, as a wizard, I’d say there is more chance of attack if anyone tells, that is,” For the first time, Regulus’s group of friends looked unsure about the situation. All that is but Pandora, of course, who came over and patted Remus on the head.
“Big beautiful Wolfie,” she hummed as she took an interest in the chair Remus was sitting on.
“She’s not wrong, sweetheart,” Regulus only just caught Sirius’s sweet words. He’d gag, but he found it touching watching Remus’s features soften.
“Okay, be warned, I suppose,” Peter coughed. “Anyway, next topic. We now have five animagi in training.” He looked at Regulus as he addressed all the Slytherins. “We cannot put Remus in jeopardy, and having this many of us running around unchecked puts him at risk as well as the others.” He zeroed in on Barty. “For now, we will let you continue learning. You have a month to prove you can be trusted, or we won’t show you what to do next,”
“I don’t see why we don’t just obliviate the lot of them and go back to it just being us,” Sirius grumbled. Regulus was surprised to be included in Sirius’s ‘we’, as if he belonged in the marauder's group and not his own Slytherin one.
“Do you know how to obliviate a person without turning their mind to soup?” Evan asked, his attempt of nonchalance lost as his voice squeaked.
“I can always learn. Why Rosier, are you volunteering?” Sirius said with an expression not unlike the one Regulus used in the Slytherin common room. The fighting started again. Regulus turned to James, who had been mostly quiet so far.
“Want to go for a walk?” he asked. James’s eyes lit up.
“I hear the Astronomy tower is lovely this time of year.”
