Norsery Rhymes from A to Z
Dellinger - The Day Bringer
Happy Thorsday! - Here’s another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, Celtic) mythological characters. This week it’s Dellingr / Dellinger/ Delling. Whose name translates to the Dawn, the shining, the dayspring, or the day bringer. The personification of the shining first light of day. It’s said that he and his people and family were bright and beautiful. Possibly indicating he was part of a group of sun and sky gods.
Husband of Nott (The personification of night). Father of Dagr with Nott. Whose name translates to ‘day’. The personification of day and light. Dellingr is Nott’s third husband after Aud, and her second husband, Annar, with who Nott had a daughter named Jord (Earth), making Jord Dagr’s half sister.
In some tales Dellingr gives Nott and Dagr their horse and chariots to pull across the sky. Making him the original owner of the Horse Drasill (Skinfaxi) “Glad”, who draws day to mankind. Adorned with precious jewels. His mane illuminates the sky and earth in a blazing fire. Alternately it’s Odin that gives Dagr and Nott their chariots and horses. Though there’s a third option here Odin taks Dellingr to hand over his charge of the horses and chariots to Not and Dagr. Dellingr is said to be the one who throws open the Dellingr’s doors. Doors of the morning to let the light out. Meaning the dawn figuratively and possibly meaning releasing Skinfaxi and his chariot to run across the sky.
He’s also said to be one of the dwarves and god Loki mentioned in the love story of Svipdag and Mengloth in the Lay of Svipdagthat. As one who made the golden floor within the hall Lyr ”Heat Holding” / “Spear” / or “Pike”, that he travels to so high. Either meaning it was a suspended floor or a floor balanced on a singular column or spear. Or alternately it’s simply on a high pointy mountain top. Either way it’s a great hall on high, surrounded by flames. Though this mention of his name could be another dwarf with the same name given the subject of construction. The inclusion of Loki, and it’s placement in the sky indicates it could also be the Dellingr of the dawn who assisted in it’s building.
