My headcanons on tiefling development/anatomy, specifically infant tiefling, because the idea of tiny, kitten-like tieflings was too adorable to resist!
I had to reference so many sphinx kittens. Wrinkly, squishy babies <3
Transcript Below Cut:
Horn Buds
Horn tissue starts growing from birth, but bone doesn't start to develop until 2-3 months
Loose Skin
As babies, tiefling have prominent scruff until right (around) 3 years of age. Depending on the variant of tiefling, some parts of the skin might still remain loose to help the body remain flexible while running and jumping. (Other spines, spikes, and ridges will start to show as the body fills into its loose skin.)
Tail Variety
The development and grwoth of a tiefling's tail depends vastly on the individual it belongs to! Spikes, spines, and other bone growth might grow at the same rate as their horns, but some don't develop until puberty (and some don't grow anything more than the initial tail bone at birth).
OTHER
- Ears remain soft & folded until about 2-3 months as well (ref horn buds)
- Eyes will remain closed 1-2 weeks after birth
- Tiny claws develop at birth, but they remain soft for the first few weeks
- Infant tiefling might also be referred to as tiefling cubs or kittens!
- That's (the drawing) baby Marzio!
Sorcerers carry a magical birthright conferred upon them by an exotic bloodline, some otherworldly influence, or exposure to unknown cosmic forces. No one chooses sorcery; the power chooses the sorcererer.
"Something pulsed in his blood. It always had, but it grew stronger each day his father grew weaker. A new dawn would rise upon the Autumn Folk."

So @junorsky's pic of Zevlor [alt] and @vicarfriedrich's Zevlor pic [alt] got me thinking.
What if tieflings with more prominent infernal traits, such as Zevlor, had sharp spines poking out at the end of their infernal ridges?
For most tieflings their infernal ridges are just cartilage.
For other tieflings they're osteoderms— hard like bone to provide a natural armor, but not necessarily painful for another individual to casually touch.
For a few unlucky ones, like Zevlor, their infernal ridges are spikes— akin to the kind that Thorny Devil lizards have.
Be-spiked individuals often shave down their spikes. Some only blunt the edges, while others try to scour them off altogether.
(DO NOT DO THIS TO A LIZARD!!!)
The spikes regrow and regain their sharpness, meaning that individuals who file them down must do so on a fairly regular basis.

This thought has given me multitudes of angst fodder for Zevlor. I will link any headcanons/fics of Zevlor I have here when they are done, but will otherwise keep this post not Zevlor-centric for those who aren't totally obsessed with him.
Most of these are headcannons and are based on my own ideas and beliefs even if not 50% close to cannon. I also used added commonly known headcannons. This is a part one. Also looking for feedback. Part two, Part three.

Tiefling Bio[?] (Sect. 1)
Spinal, Sternal, Costal Ridges:
Points are made of cartilage covered in skin like ears
Some individuals may develope slight ossification in these ridges as they age, adding to durability
Wingtips:
Superstition leads to some thinking that bigger/more prominent wingtips are good luck
More developed wingtips can indicate a stronger lineage of flight-capable ancestors
Some individuals experience minor sensitivity in their wingtips due to a high concentration of nerve endings
Upper Tail/Tail Root/Tail Base:
Off-limits to those who aren't romantically involved with specimen
Very sensitive, often causing reflexive movement when touched
Tieflings with damaged tail bases can experience difficulty balancing properly
Lower Tail:
Okay for friends/close family to touch
Partially Prehensile and can grab/pull/push things
Babies often cuddle with their tails for comfort
Often used for balance as well, especially with younglings learning to walk
Specimens may involuntarily twitch their tails when startled or excited
Tail Tip/Tail Barb:
Babies may chew on the flats of these tails and parents are recomended to put coverings over them for protection
Becomes pointier by the age of 5-6
Some individuals develope hooked or blunted tail tip rather than a sharp point
Tails May Convey Emotions: (Very Often A Subconscious Behavior)
Happy/Ecited: Tail is often upright and wags (different levels of wagging exist)
Angry/Agitated: Tail is often low and lashing side to side
Nervous/Anxious: Tail is often tucked or wrapped around the specimen's leg
Possessive/Protective: Tail is often wrapped around the s/o's waist (Very intimate)
Affectionate: Tail may wrap around a s/o's wrist or (If they have one) link with their tail
"Presenting": Tail may curve into an 'S' shape, base raises a bit (Often called "F*ck Me Tail")
Horns:
Often cut at a certain point to keep them healthy and from over-growing (Like sheep horns)
Grow rapidly
A male specimen's pride, bigger is better (More attractive)
Horns may be covered or slightly dulled at the points for infants so they don't hurt themselves/others
Cutting the horns past a certain point will stunt growth of the horns
At a certain age, they stop growing back (Often much much older which is unlike sheep horns)
Certain horn shapes and patterns can be indicative of ancestry
Claws:
Stronger, thicker and sharper than human nails
Grow quickly, like horns
Often end in tips
Can be filed down for younglings to prevent harm to themselves/others
Fangs:
First set of teeth are blunt
Get their fangs around the same time their tail gains it's point
Four canines that are strong, sharp and elongated
Sharper and stronger fangs are considered more attractive
Some may have additional ridges along their molars, aiding in the consumption of tougher food
Tongue:
Can be forked or single point
Usually longer than the average human's
Some specimen's tongues have a rougher texture similar to a felines
Eyes:
Sclera can be black or white
Irises can be almost any color and often have a bit of a glow to them
Pupils can be normal, goat-like or slits (Cat like)
Can adjust to low-light conditions, allowing for night-vision
Ears:
Pointy and elongated
Sensitive to stimulations (Sound, touch, etc)
Some specimen have the ability to move their ears to better detect sound
We know Zevlor was a Hellrider Commander, and that the Hellriders were a cavalry unit that once followed the Celestial Zariel into Avernus to kill fiends (prior to her fall). Hence the Hellrider name.
SO.
I think it would make sense that, given their strong ties to a celestial, they’d have some sort of wing motif in their armor.
And wouldn’t ya know, THAT ALREADY EXISTED.
BEHOLD
THE WINGED HUSSARS OF THE POLISH-LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH
…..yes, I was listening to that Sabaton song and thought Zevlor would look good in the armor and then realized that there could actually be a compelling lore argument for wings lol, at least as a form of ceremonial armor.
cameras require light in order to do their job properly (though now some cameras have really good night modes but those are new). drow are really sensetive to light so camera flashes would hurt their eyes. I bet in the underdark, drow taking pictures with their eyes closed would be the trend. like wistful matron mothers with their eyes downcast and looking off at nothing in particular while showing off expensive regal gowns and jewels, priestesses perfectly poised with sacrificial daggers while their eyes are closed like they're in a trance, daughters taking pictures in their bedchambers looking like they're asleep while their makeup and hair are done immaculately to show off their promising beauty, male escorts hiding their faces and eyes behind their hair while wearing scant clothing (if any at all). they'd all look so dreamy
Random elf headcanon/ home brew (+2nd additional headcanon)
So elves are known to be the species in D&D, which a lot of people consider to be like the vegans or vegetarians in the DnD world, but they are also Hunters so they do eat meat. They just eat less of it than the rest of the species in faèrun.
But what if there was a reason for that outside of just only taking enough as to not really impact nature?
What if it was a common allergy among elves to be allergic to certain kinds of meat? Like how humans can have nut allergies, elves can be allergic to different kinds of red meat or poultry, even fish. And it would be different for every elf who has the allergy of what meats they can and cannot eat.
And since the allergy is so common among elves, that could mostly frame elven cuisine to mostly be plant-based with only the elves who aren't allergic occasionally having some meat.
Kinda like irl alpha-gal syndrome, where it's caused by certain tick bites. Which could be how the elves got it, but they also could just be born with it.
So like when an elf eats meat who has this allergy they would get severe stomach pains and vomiting and hives and other reactions. And depending on the person the reaction and how bad it is could vary, with some being very serious and some being more of an annoyance.
Second, smaller headcanon
Elvish alcohol (mainly wine) for the most part would actually probably be very strong since elves have hundreds of years to build up a tolerance, so while for younger elves they could have a lot weaker alcohol percentage, the older elves would drink way higher percentages even rivalling dwarves maybe eventually, while not even feeling the effects of it because at this point it's basically just water to them because their body is so used to that level of alcohol. Which also could be another way of how they can maintain their elegance and demeanour even while drinking a lot.
