Chicken Soup for the Soul

AKA "After Alfred dies, the Batfam need a new chef. Somehow, they find Danny (who totally didn't lie on his resume and absolutely knows how to cook!). Danny just wants Mr. Pennyworth's ghost to stop harassing him." DPxDC prompt idea!

This was inspired by the bajillion other ghost!Alfred prompts, but I literally couldn't get it out of my head. Specifically, how bad Danny would be as a chef. But I also want Danny to somehow heal the Wayne's grief a little?

Damian is the first one to notice how the Manor's kitchen looks different. While Bruce, Tim, and Damian still live in the Manor, Bruce and Tim refuse to enter the kitchen. Bruce even (politely) refuses to eat the food Mr. Fenton cooks. (Damian hadn't known Alfred Pennyworth for very long but he had respected him all the same. Even so, he refuses to let his loss prevent him from walking around his own home.) So, of course, Damian notices.

It starts subtly. Mr. Fenton, their new chef, left several recipe books on the kitchen counter. It's not unusual for a chef to do so but it's jarring since Mr. Pennyworth always made sure to keep the kitchen spotless. Next, are chrysanthemum flowers in a vase. Notes pinned to the fridge with colorful magnets. Star-themed tea towels hanging off the oven door. A small hydroponic garden plugged in on the counter top. Mr. Fenton starts to listen to music - an odd mixture between country and classical, sometimes listening to a podcast about NASA or World War II. It's not obnoxiously loud but it can be heard over the bubbling of soup, Mr. Fenton chopping veggies, and occasional humming.

It's like the entire kitchen transforms with new life. Sounds, colors, movement, the scent of fresh herbs and tomato sauce. Damian stays hidden in the hallway as he silently observes.

Until he sees the cookbook flip several pages and a bottle of pepper flakes floats above the sauce pan, shaking until they flutter out. Mr. Fenton heaves an exasperated sigh and groans, "Al! I was going to add them! Ancients, if you wanted to cook, you should'a just done it."

It's several more minutes of a one-sided conversation before Damian decides either he's hallucinating (not likely given Mr. Fenton would also need to be hallucinating) or Mr. Pennyworth is... a ghost. Haunting the Manor. And somehow Mr. Fenton can see him, can communicate with him. It wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen - Damian has seen the dead revived, had the displeasure of speaking with John Constantine, and he himself has been in Hell. A ghost would be underwhelming. But the ghost of Alfred Pennyworth?

Good thing Damian is the son of the world's greatest detective. He will figure this out.

(Cue Damian recruiting Thomas, Cain, and Brown - those least familiar with Pennyworth and therefore less likely to be swayed by the ghosts of the past - to investigate Fenton's clearly meta status.)

((Alfred is surprisingly busy for a dead man. If only his new charge didn't have the cooking skills of Master Bruce. Nonetheless, Alfred has never backed down from a challenge before; he'll not do so now.))

big dog owner katsuki at the dog park (thinking maybe a husky or a shiba something fluffy with an attitude problem) and you come in with your little mini poodle or something equally as small and you see bakugou with his big scary muscles in his all black gym gear, heavy boots because he didn’t change out of them after getting home and taking his pup on a walk and you think he’s so hot, so unbelievably hot that you know this is gonna end badly. not because he has a big scary dog but because your tiny little one is a fucking asshole.

he’s not entirely reactive, (he’s a rescue and you don’t know his past) he’s just a lil anxious and got little dog syndrome where thinks he is a big scary malamute when in reality he is the size of one of the alaskan hounds sheds. so you don’t go into the park, the second you spot bakugou and his dog, you turn on your heels, but the sound of the gate has already alerted him to your presence and you’re already halfway out, your own dog tucked under your arm for the safety of the shiba on the other side of the gate.

“just cause he’s big doesn’t mean he’s dangerous, you know.” you hear bakugou call out, irritation evident in the way he drawls his words.

you stop, sigh and turn back. “ohh i know, it’s my dog that’s the problem. he’s the asshole”

bakugou raises a brow. “that thing?”

this pisses you off. “yeah. this thing is a rescue so he gets a bit iffy around dogs he doesn’t know.”

“oh.” is all the blond can say.

“yeah. oh.” you mock, tightening your arm around your dog. “not everyone is out to get you because you have a big scary dog.”

“guess the asshole trait runs in the family huh.”

“sorry?”

bakugou laughs, low and clipped and ready for a fight. “just saying. your dogs an asshole, you’re an asshole. looks like he found the right home.”

“says the guy who’s at the dog park in a fucking tank top in 10 degree weather.” you sneer, blood boiling at the brazenness of this man. “got a big dog and big muscles, overcompensating for something?”

katsuki howls a laugh, teeth bared and ready to snap. “why don’t you come over here and find out?”

“i’d rather not be disappointed anymore than i already am.” your deadpan, completely bored with the man before you. “have fun with your muscles and whatever the fuck you’ve got going on there” you turn on your heels, tiny shaking dog tucked under your arm and head back for the footpath, away from the safety of the rudest (hottest) man you’ve ever met.

it’s not till three days later when you glimpse the news do you see the asshole from the dog parks face on the tv. pro hero dynamight flashes his angry grin on the screen, the camera panning quickly as he holds up a hand to swipe the attention away muttering a curse under his breath as he blasts away.

I am so sick of the argument that people on the aromantic/asexual spectrum are ‘too young to know’ or ‘just haven’t found the right person yet.’

Any label, lesbian, bi, trans, anything, has a chance of being found to be inaccurate.

Someone who thought they were a lesbian can later realize they’re actually bi or straight or pan, and people are perfectly fine with them using that label.

AT THIS TIME, the label aro/ace spec speaks to them, so LET THEM HAVE IT. I don’t care if they’re fucking 9, if they know what it means and feel comfortable with the label then they should be able to use it without being accosted.

Bucky is high-key appalled by the lack of chivalry and politeness exhibited by the men of the twenty first century. Can't fathom that men ignore women on the train or bus who need seats, that doors aren't being opened for women, seats aren't being pulled out, space isn't made for women as they pass packs of men on the sidewalk. There are many things in this new age world that Bucky can't wrap his head around, but the disregard for women is something he'll never understand, so he opens doors for ladies if they are both going in the same building, vacates seats when there is a woman around in need of space. He can't help it, having grown up in a world entirely different to the one he is now. It is second nature and comes as quickly as breathing, but it stuns you a little the first time you get treated like that. You swoon at the fact Bucky holds the door for you, lets you pass before him, makes sure you walk on the safer side of the pavement, holds your hand when you cross the road, makes sure you get the food and drinks first, offers to drive and pay for date nights, the list is endless. Still, for once in your adult dating life, you don't question the sincerity of his words as they are backed up by actions.

"Did something happen to men while I was gone?" Bucky's confused voice floats down the hall of your apartment as he strides in, kicking his shoes off and placing them neatly on the rack by the bathroom door.

"What do you mean?" You look up from your spot on the couch, laptop sitting on your raised legs. "Like, did they go extinct and come back?"

Bucky reaches the living room and shucks off his jacket and gloves to hang over the chair before coming to the couch and plopping beside you. A soft kiss is pressed to your cheek, stubble grazing your skin as he mumbles a greeting before settling into the plush sofa.

"I mean, did they lose all manners?" he shakes his head in disbelief, hands splaying out in frustrated emphasis. "Do men not open doors for women? Or move out of the way for them on the side walk?"

You close the laptop and stow it away on the small shelf of the coffee table, no longer focusing on the information packets Tony had sent you early this morning.

"What happened?" You ask, reaching up to card your fingers through his hair, enjoying how he melts into your touch.

"I just watched a bucnh'a men in suits practically push a woman out of the way to get through the door." he sighs, clearly exasperated at the lack of respect for other humans. "And then they didn't even hold the door for her! They just let it swing closed. How do they act on dates? I doubt they pay."

You hum, letting his rant continue.

"And I was on the line."

"Online." you correct gently, spiking his hair up with your fingers, the shorter strands finally obeying you.

"I was online," he rectifies. "and I saw this video of a woman talking about a man getting angry that she wasn't gonna go home with him after the first date."

"Please tell me that never happened to you." His attention shifts to you now, genuine distress simmering in his blue eyes, and when you don't answer, he becomes distraught.

"Doll, no," Bucky shakes his head as if you confessed to the murder of his beloved stuffed animal. "Come on, you gotta be joking."

"It was years ago! I was young and stupid and didn't know my worth." You shrug, obviously not as upset as your counterpart. “I've learnt my lesson. I know I am worth at least two dinners now." The joke falls flat as Bucky stares, not amused.

"It's a joke, Buck."

"I know, but I don't like it." He grumbles, folding his arms across his chest like a child. "Don't like that you were treated like that."

"Well, good thing I've got you now, huh?" you abandon his hair, stroking the back of your fingers over his stubbly cheek.

Bucky pouts. "Still don't like it. You deserved better."

You kiss his cheek, feeling his cheeks round as he smiles. "You're too good to me, Mr. Barnes." another kiss to the corner of his mouth. "Even if we did sleep together on the first date."

"Hey! That wasn't the same. We knew each other before that." Bucky protests as you stand from the couch, walking to the kitchen to start on dinner. "At least I paid!"

if jkr was a feminist she would talk about women's rights without a trans person coming into the equation.

she would talk about the fact that violence against women has been declared a national emergency in the uk, and she wouldn't follow it up with trans bathroom debates. that 70k donation to stop trans women being legally recognised as women? maybe that could have been spent elsewhere in the legal system. perhaps in ensuring that rapists and abusers actually get convicted of their crimes and that the 1 in 2 women who are victims of this do not shake their head with an empty sigh when they're asked if they would like to press charges. she wouldn't have come online with 14m followers and debated the validity of imane khelif's success, wouldn't have argued that a woman of colour was trans because she don't fit her western ideals of what a woman should look like, because feminism isn't feminism if it isn't intersectional. she wouldn't have handed johnny fucking depp millions upon millions. she wouldn't have given marilyn manson fucking flowers. if jkr were a feminist she would have spoken up about farage and his proposed restrictions to abortion. reform are leading the uk polls right now, this is becoming more of a threat but no no, silence.

I just took a look at my old drafts, and I'm going to clean them up, post some ideas that I've been letting gather dust there, but also take the opportunity to show some of the most ridiculous ones I found lol

(they were written without a translator since they were thoughts I had at the time and without time to fix or write them properly, so they are either stupidly grammatically wrong or are mixing English and Portuguese, but for me that only makes them better)
