First EMDR Session

I came to Andrew, who does EMDR

With knives in my brain

And begged him,

“Help me pull these out.

So I don’t bleed on my kids.

They deserve better than a mother

With blades in her head.”

???

He took my hand

Like a friend, 

And I placed it

On my head.

I expected the trauma version

Of pulling a tooth.

It’s not that.

???

I looked up and I saw…

The blades weren’t there.

Not anymore.

I just had scar tissue

In the shape of many knives

That have long since gone

And no doubt rusted away.

???

Andrew massaged a section of my brain…

Like when you rub your hands together 

On a cold day, to get the blood flowing.

It worked. It flowed 

To every brain cell.

The healthy ones,

And scarred ones both.

???

Whatever this is,

It is the opposite of dissociation.

I had no idea the world could be this vivid. 

Music is fascinating, 

People have so much to teach me,

I love this video game

My husband has the sweetest laugh.

???

I feel past humiliations

With all the intensity

Of a blinding fever.

But when I am not doing that…

I am mesmerized 

By the present world

And hopeful for the future. ???

Had another emdr session on Monday. We worked on something I didn't think bothered me so much as the 1st time but I nearly had a panic attack.

It's funny what you don't realize effects you.

I have recently discovered that healing is not dressing your wound and keeping it safely tucked away. Healing is cutting open the wound, inspecting the festering bits before carefully removing them and intricately stitching yourself back together.
