Hello from the 22nd floor, up high in Dubai 😊 Just finished practice, which was just equal parts exhilarating and frightening on this balcony. People always ask me how I handle travel, especially long haul flights. My top two tips are practice and hydration. Without a good practice I never feel I’ve arrived. Without a good serving of water my body feels out of whack from the flights. What are you favorite travel tips to stay balanced? This weekend I’ll be back in the US teaching in Indianapolis! I have a feeling it’s quite bit colder there than it is where I am right now. Practice live with me online on @omstarsofficial In-person classes in the US (Yin on April 6) and training courses (next one in July) in Miami @miamiyogagarage Next workshops in Charlotte, Indianapolis, Chicago and NYC. #yoga #dubai #uae #ashtanaga #ashtangayoga #yogi #yogapractice #yogainspiration #kinoyoga #omstars #ashtangayoga #gomukhasana #desert 💕 (at Dubai) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cbr380KrlI6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Patanjali wrote very little about āsana. In three Sutras he explained that when in the posture is stable and comfortable, the effort is released, then the posture is perfected and one finds the union with the infinite. In this absorption state, one is no longer affected by the pair of opposites (heat and cold, pain and pleasure, etc). B.K.S. Iyengar says something interesting about that effort, by explaining that the effort is required so one does not need the effort anymore. That effort is the practice. We have chosen Āsana as a means to learn the discipline of the effort, which shows us and leads us to make the same constant, uninterrupted and truly devoted effort in the fields of our minds, trying to become more aware, so we can learn how to decide with discernment, so one can realize of our true self. Gomukhasana (Cow Face Pose)
Cow Face Pose is a seated yoga posture that deeply stretches the hips and shoulders. It calms the mind and brings balance to the whole body. Due to a lifetime of incorrect postural habits, many people are imbalanced between the left and right sides of the body. By simultaneously stretching the top and bottom of both sides of the body, you can more easily discover your own imbalances and work to regain equilibrium in mind, body, and spirit.
The Sanskrit name for this pose, “Gomukhasana” comes from three words:
“Go” — meaning “cow”
“Mukha” — meaning “face”
“Asana” — meaning, “pose”
Benefits of Cow Face Pose :
This pose stretches almost every part of the body: The hips, shoulders, ankles, thighs, armpits, triceps, and chest. By equally lengthening and opening both sides of the body, it helps to correct posture and regain balance between the left and right sides of your body, and the top and bottom. Sitting upright with your spine aligned calms the mind and reduces stress, anxiety, and fatigue. This pose also increases blood supply to the legs and arms, making it a useful pose to counteract long periods of sitting in a chair or being hunched over a desk.
Tips :
Practicing Cow Face Pose in correct alignment can seem like an unattainable goal if your hips or shoulders are very tight. But with regular practice, your flexibility will increase! Keep the following information in mind when practicing this pose:
To evenly distribute the stretch across your body, be sure to raise the arm that is on the same side of the body as your bottom leg.
Don’t worry if you can’t yet cross your legs knee-to-knee or clasp your fingers. Take it slowly and focus on the pose you can do, not on the pose you wish you could do. Flexibility will come in time.
Build up to this pose by practicing postures that open your outer hips. Some examples include Easy Pose with Forward Fold (Adho Mukha Sukhasana), Half Lotus Tree Pose (Ardha Padmasana Vrksasana), and One-Legged King Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana).
Remember to breathe smoothly and evenly throughout the pose. The more you relax in the pose, the more your hips and shoulders will open up.
Contraindications :
Do not practice this pose if you have a recent or chronic shoulder or knee injury. Also avoid this pose if you have any serious neck or shoulder problems. Always work within your own range of limits and abilities. If you have any medical concerns, talk with your doctor before practicing yoga.
DETAIL + DEPTH | Even though we can break poses down in countless ways and create fun, novel ways to prepare the parts of the body for more complex poses, nothing can replace Standing Poses. They build confidence, strengthen the lower body, develop balance, and are generally the most accessible of the poses. They also tend to generate a lot of heat, which is helpful as we warm up for backbends. Start with this Gomukhasana-arm Warrior 2. Rather than focusing on the depth of the pose, turn the attention on strengthening the external rotators of the forward hip and opening the chest, armpit and triceps of the top arm. These will be beneficial for the peak pose, Eka Pada Rajakpotasana 1. Lengthen the spine, stay and breathe, then switch sides. © 2018 Ellen Huang Saltarelli #detailanddepth #alignmentyoga#yogaalignment #yogachair #chairyoga #Yoga #yogaprops #propyourpose #yogapractice#yogaeverydamnday#practiceandalliscoming #iyengaryoga #warrior2 #gomukhasana #yogaforeverybody (at Eagle Rock, Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoJwQ-HAhYO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14cgkweqocrsx
