dear tumblr users, followers and friends

my friends and i have stumbled across a 6th grade question that we are all stumped at and cannot solve

we can’t use trigonometry at all. the students that are supposed to be doing this question haven’t even stepped foot into sin cos tan

i spent 5 hours yesterday mulling over this question

this is a cry for help

One of the Grade 6s made a sign for the library for their favourite series:

Kun: かた.い、-がた.い、むずか.しい、むづか.しい、むつか.しい、-にく.い On: ナン (Pinyin: nán | nan2, nàn | nan4 )

Pictophonetic: 𦰩 indicates the sound (pinyin jiān | jian1), and 隹 (bird) indicates the meaning

Originally meant "type of bird". Due to similar pronounciations, the kanji was borrowed for the current meaning and eventually outcompeted the original meaning.

Today's lunch supervision was enlivened when a grade 7 decided to pet a pigeon on the school stairs. The pigeon was calm and just flew away a little bit to a ledge on the side of the building and continued its pigeon business. The grade 7 on the other hand was a feral wild animal who attempted to climb the school wall in pursuit of their goal and had to be forced down and sent inside for sanitizer.

And continuing what seems like it will be a delightful year of grade 6 boys, one of them accidentally said "you're welcome" instead of "sorry" when I asked them to stop talking through instructions, which made me laugh. So now his entire group of friends is busting into a note-perfect rendition of 'What can I say except you're welcome!' from Moana every time I need the class's attention. THIS is the nonsense and shenanigans I specifically request in my classroom, children, well done, 10/10 for you.

Today, my teacher came in saying the class next to ours was calling one of the students gay (in a way that sounded insulting)

So, I decided to go in there, to see what was going on

I walked in and they're talking about whatever, idk what.

"So who's gay?" I asked.

They all looked at me for a second, I could see the fear in some of their eyes.

One of the students said, "You are" in a sarcastic way

So I said, "Yeah, I am."

The entire class of like 10-ish students goes dead silent. And, these kids are like 11-13 years old. This class is a 5, 6, 7 class.

"You are?" one of them asked hesitantly.

I just said "yup" so casually, like it was everyday conversation, and some of them are just STUNNED.

"Oh, I didn't know that"

After this exchange they started fumbling around, trying to explain why they were calling some kid gay, but I wasn't really listening, I really only wanted to intimate them 😂

I walked out and my other teacher walked by their class and overheard them saying that "high schoolers are scary"

Like, yeah, Shalane, you should be scared.

3.7.17 I had my grade 6 piano exam this morning!! I think it went okay but we'll have to see :') now I'm just reading through 'the bloody chamber' by angela carter and making some notes using this little key in the front cover
