It's always so funny to me that my entire life my parents bragged about how early I learn to speak, or how well I speak at age of two and adults are mesmerized, or how I learned to walk early at 8 months, or how I learn to read by myself at 3yo... And were shocked when I was diagnosed autistic 😂

I wish people know more about cognitive advancement related to autism.

We are autistic. We need accomidations. We need our noise canceling headphones, sunglasses, our plushies and fidgets. We need to stim. Our AACs and text to speech apps for when we're nonverbal or semi verbal. We need breaks. We need a service dog. We need to see if there's more stuff we need to navigate life as a autistic polyfragmented system.

My partner is a great masker and has low support needs, I think that one of our loveliest moments are the moments where I stim in a big way. They’ll look at me, and wonder what I’m doing. They ask, but I don’t answer. Then, they try that stim, and almost understands exactly how it feels for me.

I really think we should replace “non-verbal” with “non-speaking”.

My sister is non-speaking. Her communication is limited to basic “I want” and “first this, then that” phrases and echolalia (or as my family calls it, “scripting”, because the phases she echos are from her favourite tv shows) that we’ve learned to interpret.

But she’s very, very verbal. We call her our little canary because she’s constantly singing, scripting to herself, laughing, or making verbal noises.

She may not speak the way most neurotypical people do, but she is hyper verbal.
