The 5th Wave

Could not put it down. Much better than the movie. Its funny and intriguing and engaging. I like the switching povs and the order in which the story was told.

The aliens not having physical bodies is very trippy. I'm interested to see how that goes in the next book.

Also, I love Bear and how he functions as like an embodiment of Cassie's humanity.

Book Review: The Shadow of Kyoshi

4/5 stars

I enjoyed the deeper dive into fire nation politics. Kyoshi and Rangi are so adorable. I liked the Sky Bison being recognized as the mvps of any Team Avatar.

I didn't love the resolution. Kuruk SAYS Yun is acting of his own free will but then we get SHOWN Yun digging tunnels like a worm. Seems very possessed to me. Also, showing Kyoshi what Yun did in the spirit world without telling her it was specifically in defense of Father Glowworm trying to eat him felt like a misrepresentation.

I understand the general point they were trying to make was the avatars have to make hard calls and sometimes death is the answer. I think they did a good job of that and reinforcing why Kyoshi told Aang to be decisive.

I also think of the "cane back wrong" trope Yun is a pretty solid example.

I think she is perhaps too uncritical of her ex-husband, but many will relate to not wanting or feeling able to be critical of their ex.
