Having good intuition allows us to see from a different perspective everywhere we go. Understanding your surroundings and understanding human behavior all helps with how we interpret things around us. Letting it guide you allows you to be a better decision maker, a good friend to those you care about, and picking the right path that suites you to your best needs.
MBTI 101: What Do the Letters Mean? (Part 2)
Intuition (N) vs Sensing (S)
The different between intuitives and sensors is probably the biggest difference in the MBTI! Sensors also outnumber intuitives in the real world 3:1, although tumblr is PACKED with iNtuitive types...
Why N? Why not I?
That’s because we already have an I (for introversion) - and the last thing anyone wants to do is make the random strings of letters which make up MBTI type even LESS memorable... 16 personalities tried to come up with snazzy names for each of the types, but they don’t always describe them well. Personally I prefer the descriptions you see on here, even though they’re not always flattering!
So What’s the Difference?
Overall, sensors and intuitives think differently. Sensors tend to think sequentially/neatly, whereas intuitives have messier thoughts which range all over the place. Sensing deals strictly with what exists or what existed as it it, whereas intuition adds a second layer of personal or abstract meaning to any sensory experience.
Does intuition in MBTI mean the same as the general definition?
Yes and no. It includes everything you’d use the word for generally but it also refers to a specific style of thought. Intuition works differently in each type and can be extroverted or introverted, but that’s something better saved for another post!
Are YOU An iNtuitive?
You’re on tumblr. Duh. Of course you are. Unless you’re an aesthetically minded SP type who’s here for dreamy photos, fashion, and art. In all seriousness, tumblr has an abundance of intuitive types compared to other social media. In fact, most of the reasons it’s referred to fondly as a ‘shithole of a website’ or other variants are because intuitive types are, well, a bit odd. You could say we’re eccentric, but that doesn’t fully explain it. You can be strongly or weakly intuitive too. I’m a strong intuitive, but you can probably tell that by the fact I run this nerdy blog ;-)
Intuitive types often experience:
More mental health issues
Feelings of being different
Huge imagination and a tendency to escape into fantasy
A draw to the deeper things in life
Depending on your type, you might be into topics considered geeky or esoteric
May be diagnosed with autism, add, adhd, or a similar disorder
Dislike of small talk
Why do I see so much hate for sensors?
As intuitive types are outnumbered, discovering MBTI and finding explanations for your quirks can be extremely validating. However, a life of not fitting with society - which is built by and for sensors - can live some intuitive types a little embittered. However, the fun loving, artisanal SP types also struggle, even if their cognitive style is more similar to SJ types. Ultimately, I believe MBTI should be used as a tool to promote understanding between types - not to divide.

Part Three coming soon - feeling vs thinking!
Relying on your intuition generally has a bad reputation, especially in the Western part of the world where analytic thinking has been steadily promoted over the past decades. Gradually, many have come to think that humans have progressed from relying on primitive, magical and religious thinking to analytic and scientific thinking. As a result, they view emotions and intuition as fallible, even whimsical, tools. However, this attitude is based on a myth of cognitive progress. Emotions are actually not dumb responses that always need to be ignored or even corrected by rational faculties. They are appraisals of what you have just experienced or thought of – in this sense, they are also a form of information processing. It is time to stop the witch hunt on intuition, and see it for what it is: a fast, automatic, subconscious processing style that can provide us with very useful information that deliberate analysing can’t. We need to accept that intuitive and analytic thinking should occur together, and be weighed up against each other in difficult decision-making situations.
‘Is it rational to trust your gut feelings? A neuroscientist explains’, Dr Valerie van Mulukom, the Conversation
The Apollonian and Dionysian is a philosophical and literary concept, or dichotomy, based on certain features of ancient Greek mythology. Many Western philosophical and literary figures have invoked this dichotomy in critical and creative works. In Greek mythology, Apollo and Dionysus are both sons of Zeus. Apollo is the god of reason and rational thinking, while Dionysus is the god of the irrationality and chaos, and appeals to emotions and instincts. The Greeks did not consider the two gods to be opposites or rivals, although often the two deities were entwined by nature.

You and ENTP
ENTP, in the middle, can be tricky to pin down. Sometimes it is said they leave chaos in their wake. As intuitive dominants, and as perceivers, they may not be the most orderly of types ... the eight of pentacles represents the fruits of labour, or working slowly and steadily... with ENTP, the card is not so much turned on it’s head, but thrown out entirely ;-)
Left - what you think of ENTP - ace of cups reversed - the reversed ace of cups represents blocked energy, or energy flowing or spilling out of place. Whilst sometimes this can refer to missed opportunities or blockages in normal tarot, here is describes how the ENTP can be perceived to have no method in their madness at all, with ideas flowing left, right, and centre ... however, this is not necessarily the case ~
Right - how ENTP sees you - four of pentacles reversed - the four of pentacles is a miserly card, showing clinging to ideas, material possessions, or wealth, or an inability to let go. This can certainly be how some heavily intuitive ENTPs see other types - especially the SJ types - but remember the ENTP can be extreme themselves. Give a little, and they will thank you for it - but ultimately, there is a need to trust their somewhat eccentric ways of doing things really do lead to results ...
Like my INFJ post, this spread indicates a misunderstanding between a relatively unusual or extreme type, and the rest of the personality types. Both INFJs and ENTPs can be misunderstood by those who don’t know them well. However, strong intuitive should also realise its in their own interests to meet others in the middle - something I had to learn myself.
An experimental “hero’s journey” tarot -
The hero’s journey was created by Joseph Campbell, who analysed myths and stories from all over the world and noticed the same pattern repeating throughout. The pattern tells of the progress of the main character, hero, or protagonist from an ‘ordinary world’ through their first challenge and a point in the ‘abyss’ where it seems all hope is lost and they are required to face their dark side.
Depth psychologists and philosophers in the 20th century drew parallels between mythology and the processes of self development within the human psyche as each individual sheds the persona they show society, becoming truer to themselves. This too involves a psychological journey from the ordinary state of mind, passing many challenges along the way.
As a partly psychological tool, tarot can help facilitate this. I developed an experimental hero’s journey tarot spread with five cards, each representing a different part of the journey. From left to right they span from the ordinary world, the ‘call to adventure’, the first challenge, the abyss, and the resolution. However, as both tarot and depth psychology involve a huge amount of energy beyond what a reader can immediately pick up, some of the cards on this spread surprised me as they did not make sense with the stages of the journey - either the spread or my interpretation needs further examining. This is a spread I am going to continue developing, so watch this space!
