Shivering.
"You are a kind hearted person and you really touched my heart the way you were so selfless.. you really helped me out when I needed it, and for that I'll never have the chance to thank you in person. You are a kind soul, I hope you know that.."
To Angela who donated $10 and anyone else that has helped me in the past, and even anyone who would help if they had the means but can't right now - eUë

You know... That was one of the hardest things to see growing up. Kind things that only made people hurt more. It's like you gave them a rose and they held on to it so tightly it made their hands bleed.

Yesterday I went to Salt and Straw for some ice cream because I had been craving it all day.
When I got there I asked for two samples, then a third, and a fourth, and a fifth. They were all really good and I couldn't decide. The guy behind the counter was super nice, explaining to me the different flavors and textures of each new sample I tried, what was mixed in to each one.
He told me to meet him at the register once I decided on my single scoop, and then said "This one is on me." I've never had the person behind the counter cover my order. I said thank you, and reached in my wallet and said "Well I can definitely give you a tip"
He said "Yeah, you can do that!" And then went back to help another customer.
For some reason I expected the gesture to be the segue to a personal compliment or maybe even a request for my phone number, but it wasn't. And then I remembered that white men don't ask me for my phone number in public. Moreover, no man of any kind has flirted with or approached me for the two years that I've lived here. You go on with work and your life every day and it's something you don't typically think about. But it is moments like these that remind you of how invisible you seem to be.
I appreciated the kind gesture after I stopped feeling silly for hoping it meant something else.
