help please english is not my first language and i am confused

what does it mean in backslide when he says "there's no chance i will shake this again"

what does it mean to shake something figuratively?? my guess was that it meant to mess up but I'm not sure that's correct

Lovely how I just said that I recognise more characters than pronunciations... and then I go about my studying for the day and decide to check the tones for 工作. It was in an example sentence for grammar and I found myself uncertain, especially for 作. It's the fourth tone, ArchChinese dictionary says.

At this point I'm like wait... I kind of thought it was second like in 昨天. So, naturally, I use the pinyin input to write it down only to figure out that each ''zuo'' is a different character! I simply cannot fathom how this was not clear to me. I learnt both of these words already in 2017!? Have I been writing yesterday with the wrong character and for how long? (I still had someone correcting my handwritten stuff in 2019 so I guess it happened after, but oh my god this is embarrassing on a personal level.)

Just earlier this week I was thinking how stupid it is to write all these 'easy' words into a dictionary because I forget tones all the time. Turns out it is a good practice and I should keep up with it, because you never know when you find out an old error in your ways.

So, I need to share the struggle and take this weight off my chest :’) I have been taking Arabic classes at university for over two years, and I am proud to say I am learning such a difficult language, however I cannot say I can speak it.  My first teacher was a lovely person, but she didn’t teach us anything: I lack all the basis, from food names to clothing to basic tourist things such as “if you want to get to the Colosseum, turn left and go straight ahad”; I am far from being conversational, however I surely know how to talk about Italy’s plan to stop the pandemic because my new teacher is having us translate videos form Al-Jazeera. And it is driving me nuts. I gave up on more “successful” degrees only to learn this beautiful language, but now I feel like I will never be able to speak it. Which is awful.

Its so strange how long language escaped me. I struggled for years to learn words Their meanings always becoming Blurry. Sometimes even backwards.

Even now I struggle to express everything in my heart I wish I could confess. Everything I feel for you my sweetheart.

But the words still escape. Confusing my mind. Unable to take shape. and somehow miss defined.

I just want to say “I miss you” But instead it comes out. “I have an issue” And sometimes its a shout.

But still you are here. Supporting my struggles. Instead of trying to disappear. Now all I need are snuggles.

Writing / Fanfictions :

I am taking it too seriously and preventing myself from finishing an OS, or publishing a specific work because -

My English level is B2 and I lack vocabulary.

I haven't watched the entirety of a show and I feel like a scam (while I've consumed YouTube videos, Tumblr posts, and Fanfictions, so I basically know what happens between a ship).

I want it to be as good as a "real book" (whatever that means).

I have that insufferable desire to instantly be GREAT at the art of writing, when I could be considered as a sort of beginner (that "gifted kid" bullshit, so now that I am almost 26 I can't learn something without being frustrated I am not an expert from the very beginning 🙃).

I want my work to be SO ACCURATE that I sometimes forget about having fun.

- Add to that the fact that I would like to publish bookS one day, and you're set for brain explosion. 🤯😭

Writing to a friend in french, then to another friend in english... I end up adding words from a language to another in conversations...

Learning another language is great, I recently got to the point where I have entire monologues in English, which is not my first language, and I feel pretty confident about my vocabulary until I get to actually use it.
