Lucas who's always Felt Something for Dustin but never recognized it as being in love with him. the thought never even crossed his mind! after all - they're best friends, aren't they? maybe the love he has for Dustin isn't quite the same as the kind he has for Mike or Will, and he's never felt nearly as unsteady around them as he does around Dustin sometimes (most notably when he smiles, or laughs, or gets that excited sparkle in his eyes right as he launches into an enthusiastic explanation of his newfound knowledge), but what's that matter?

it's not until he's dating Max that the realization finally hits him. because the way he feels about Max when she's just her is the same way he feels about Dustin when he's just him.

he feels horrible for it. for loving his best friend, who never asked for or invited Lucas to feel this way about him. for loving his girlfriend and someone else at the same damn time.

there's no confusion, not at all, because loving Dustin makes just as much sense as loving Max; Lucas isn't even surprised that his heart would have enough room for both of them. how could he not feel this way?

but the guilt that comes with this realization (long overdue, he's sure) is worse.

he wants them. and he might lose them for it. because he knows, he knows he can't keep this to himself. jesus, he's already shaking and teary-eyed and maybe actually about to throw up, and now that he's thought about it, there's no unthinking it. it's cracked something open inside of him and he knows that, if he doesn't come clean, it will show anyway.

so he tells Max.

he can't look her in the eye when he does. he's frozen, really. he knows his voice is uneven, and his heart is beating too fast, and he's got sweaty palms and weak legs. but he tells her.

he screws his eyes shut once he's forced the words out. he doesn't think he's ever felt this scared before. not without the upside down in play, at least.

he's so tense, so focused on bracing himself for whatever her response might be, and the silence he waits through is nearly unbearable.

then Max snorts.

"i was starting to think you'd never figure it out."
