Summary
On a family movie night with his Mom and Dad Tom Curry and Atlanna, Arthur shows his wife Mera the movie Titanic (1997). Mera doesn't quite relate to the movie, believing the wreck and others like it are refuse littering the ocean floor. Determined to change her mind, Arthur takes her to visit the wreck in person...
Excerpt
Arthur, broad-shouldered and relaxed, stretched his arm along the back of the couch, watching the screen with a half-smile. Beside him, Mera perched elegantly, her red hair a vibrant contrast to the dim room, her gaze skeptical as she observed the unfolding drama of Titanic. She was charmed enough by the love story, relating to Rose through comparing her engagement to Orm with Rose's engagement to Cal, but the sinking scenes did nothing for her. She had seen enough movies with Arthur by now to not be impressed with simulated carnage. Tom, rugged and weathered, sat at the end, a mug of tea in hand, while Atlanna—regal yet softened by motherhood—leaned forward, occasionally dabbing at her eyes with a tissue. As the ship on screen groaned and tilted, "Is this meant to be tragic? It looks like just another sunken relic cluttering the sea floor," Mera mused, her tone tinged with curiosity and a hint of disdain. Arthur slowly turned his gaze to her, his amber eyes watering with held-back tears. "You mean the people losing their lives in the sinking? That's not tragic?" "It's just a movie," Mera reminded him stiffly. Arthur sighed. He had to remind himself to give her some grace. The Surface had been littering the sea with refuse and ships for centuries. Since becoming king, it had become a growing concern for him, too. "It's more than just a movie, Mera. For a lot of people up here, it's a story—a real tragedy, and not just another relic cluttering the sea floor," said Arthur, his voice gentle. Mera narrowed her eyes, considering. Atlanna placed a hand on her shoulder, "Sometimes, the things lost at sea carry memories, not just metal and wood." Tom nodded solemnly, "I always thought the Titanic was more like a monument than a mess." "Let’s see it with our own eyes. Maybe you’ll feel differently underwater," Arthur proposed. "Besides, I've always thought about seeing it for myself." Tom chuckled to himself. " 'Let's visit the actual Titanic' he says. So casually. Well, son, be careful and say hi to Leo for me if you see him down there." Arthur grinned at his father and turned back to Mera. The prospect of visiting the wreck was making him giddy with excitement. "Well, what do you say?" Mera sighed. "Fine. I know you're going to pester me about it until I relent." "Yup," confirmed Arthur. Heading out the front door of the lighthouse he called out into the surrounding sea and the sea of stars above, "I'm the King of the World! WHOO HOO HOO!" King of the Seven Seas. Close enough.
