Happy pride month to nonbinary people!! Every single enban and enby, out for one day or out for all your life, and those yet to be out, have a great pride! Enbiness is something to be celebrated, leaving the binary behind and living your own life is beautiful and should be celebrated!! Genderqueers, neuters, inverts, androgynes and bi-genders fought for our ability to be able to be a united nonbinary community today, and that fight cannot die, or be washed in any capitalistic or liberal manner. I am black. I am nonbinary. To any other enben of colour,

I see you.

I know how you are treated in your ethnic culture, in your family. How they tell you "it's a white thing" even though it was your vibrantly-gendered culture that was steamrolled into a binary by Western colonisers. I know how it feels to not be able to use your correct pronouns in your mother tongue because no one knows the neopronouns you have to use in your binary gendered language. I know how you try to mix and explore sides of your native culture that you have never explored before. That you never knew you could blend so euphorically back when you used to live under the binary. I know the guilt you feel for not fitting in, for not being able to pass up your racialised binary gender experience. The ethic sisterhood, the racialised brotherhood. I know how it feels, to be able to pass as something amongst white people, but then the sweetness of that is taken from you as you remember that it is rooted in the racist binarism that continues to subjugate the binary members of your race. I know how to feels to feel invisible in the non-binary community, when most of our representation is white. I know how it feels to view androgyny or gender neutrality as impossible unless you are white; it was the same feeling you felt towards masculinity and femininity when you were binary gendered. I know how it feels to want to transition in a masculine or feminine way, but remembering those who pass as men or women in your ethnicity get killed and sexually assaulted at random by the system. I know how it feels to not want to risk it, to want to hide forever. I see you. I. See. You.

But I do not only know your struggle. I know the beauty of finding other enben of colour, who understand the intersections, the history. I understand the joy that is uncovering that history before colonialism, of the many different genders and modalities of you ancestors gone by. I know the smile that comes on your face when your chosen family (which can include blood relation) uses the right pronouns, the right neopronouns. I know the understanding that it's okay to still understand your racialised binary experience will forever be a part of you that white trans people might not understand. I know the joy of expression through hair, and the absolute ecstasy that comes when you too will realise that androgyny and gender neutrality is not just for white people, not just in white expression. It works in your ethnicity too. I know the feeling of peace that comes from being gendered in your desired way by a member of your race, realising you are surpassing the binarist system.

I know the feeling of great pain that comes from being an enban of colour, a black enban to be specific, but I also know the feelings of great beauty that you get from that intersection. It gets dark sometimes, but there is joy to be found. There is community to be found. There is unity to be found. There is life to be found as an enban/enby of colour. We are strong and we shine brighter than the sun.

Do you ever notice how the majority of nonbinary characters are just straight up not human beings? The majority of our non-binary rep is inhuman, which shows how binary society still views us as a literal societal impossibility despite us being here, real people, on earth with them.

I feel like this feeds into the whole thing of enben being seen as like "eldritch horrors" or "other worldly." Even though it might be claimed to be only in jest, it still displays how we are implicitly seen as a human impossibility because of the pervasiveness of the gender binary in society. It's taught to us as "natural" and how "humans have always functioned" despite our modern bourgeois, patriarchal, white-supremacist gender binary originating as a tool of colonialism. That was very recent in anthropological history. (Also note how capitalism is intertwined with binary supremacy here.)

When you delve into this it's wild. It starts surface level but it reveals the core exorsexism and classism of the capitalist society for one, but how it permeates into jokes ("I can identify as an attack helicopter!" "Nonbinary people are little frogs/eldritch beings!"), representation (most nonbinary representation is of inhuman characters) and our legal status (inexistent, which means no civil rights or legal protection of any kind.)

How would you describe antibinarism?

To me, antibinarism is to be against the current gender binary in a manner that recognises the colonialist, bourgeois roots of the system.

Binarism is the Western imposed gender binary is a tool of colonialism, neo and classical. As a black person with direct African heritage, it broke my heart to find out how the West steamrolled the nuances of gender experience in my native culture, and imposed a very strict sex and gender binary. It divided them, it alienated them from their own culture and set them into rigid worker identities. Binarism shows why binary gendered POC are held to unrealistic standards that they will never reach because they are not going to fit into the patriarchal, white, bourgeois cishet binary. It shows how the binary was used to dehumanise us though that effect. It explains why queer people have always been genderqueer by nature of their sexualities. It explains why the nuclear family model was developed in that particular manner economically (domestic labour mother, market labour father and 2.5 children) and why it is upheld as a finality (to produce workers at an effective rate; to manage and engage with private ownership). Binarism is down to capitalism and it's effects on society, culture and mentality.

So for me as an antibinarist, I am specifically anticapitalist because of this. They are inseparable. I feel that anti-binarism is to be against the sociocultural mindset of the gender binary and the reasoning why it exists (capitalism, exploitation and private property.)

As a black British transgender person, this country is pitiful. The ruling to exclude our binary trans sisters from the legal protections women are granted in the United Kingdom is beyond appalling. They have been forced into legal nonexistence, too reminiscent of the enben of the UK. This will affect everyone in the trans community, including trans men. This is a day of great mourning, but it is also a day of revitalisation. We must organise, protest, riot, make ourselves so loud we must be listened to. We must stand with our trans sisters and be unified as siblings in this community. We have not lost the fight. As long as we are living we will not lose.

Thoughts on transandrophobia?

What sort of thoughts are you looking for? If you are asking whether I see it as a thing that exists, then yes. Misandry as the "oppression of a man because they are a man" is always intersectional as the patriarchy is a bourgeois tool of control to favour a particular person to hold capital, to work, to organise the family unit, to organise society. The gender binary reinforces this by making one type of man or woman the "correct type" that every other type must try to attain to. That type presents conformingly binary, is not poor, is white, cisgender, perisex, heterosexual, able bodied and productive, law abiding (and therefore moral), fertile, sane and mentally "healthy", from the global north and west, amongst other things. These people are the people deemed the best workers, who will produce the best workers. These people are entrusted to hold capital, and so are posited as the archetype. The man is favoured between the woman and the man because of the dichotomous nature of the binary; "one must be better." Equality is not possible with such a system in place.

So if someone doesn't fit into this, they will be subjugated in the context of their binary gender. Black men are subjugated in this way, trans women are, lesbians are, disabled men are, so I don't see why trans men would be exempt from this. The women of any class (particularly intersectional women) will always get the shorter end of the stick so to speak in terms of systemic oppression as the least favoured in the dichotomy, but intersectional manhood will too be subjugated.

This blog, whilst recognising the ways in which transmisogyny and transandrophobia/transmisandry affect enben, focuses on exorsexism, intersexism, binarism and such. How this system directly oppresses, discriminates against and subjugated those who are outside of the sex and gender binaries (nonbinary people, intersex, genderqueers, gncs). Whilst they're important, this place is not the place to discuss the issues of binary members of our community. This is an nonbinary space.

Being nonbinary in any form is inherently a threat to the system as capitalism thrives on the societal sustenance of the nuclear family. One of the smallest units of this is the gender binary. This binary is omnipresent, in every little nook and cranny of society. In the things you say, the way you walk, the manner in which you talk, even the way you think, is binary gendered. To naturally deviate from this line of thought, of interaction, of life, is radical to me.

To consciously queerly deviate in every aspect is where the genuine material radicalism lies. To queer your enbiness, to make it political and openly anti capitalist, to note it as being of a leftist persuasion, to be anti-binary instead of just non-binary (as I've seen the term bandied around) is materially radical. To go against those dichotomies introduced by man/woman, male/female, exclusive masculine/exclusive feminine. To see and understand these binaries as a bourgeois creation and tool of division and oppression. To protest and question the foundation of this society. To respond to the culture in a queer way and rallies against it accordingly to develop the society into a better future. To be living proof that it is possible to live and live well outside of this bourgeois societial structure. This is very radical to me.
