In Perfect Harmony
While attending President Nelson's home ward the day after his passing, I joined in singing "God Be with You Till We Meet Again". This hymn has parts that are higher (typically sung by women) and parts that are lower (typically sung by men). The refrain looks like this in the hymnal:
Slightly Tragic Backstory: I do not sing well. There is a long and funny tale about this worthy of @inbabylontheywept. The story includes an unhappy choir director, instructions to lip-sync during choral concerts, and an eventual (and official) dis-invitation from all things choir.
Despite my limitations, I participate in the singing of hymns at church! And when I am presenting female, I tend to sing the girl parts, even though I am pretty sure I am doing it wrong (it doesn't matter which part I take honestly, it will probably still be wrong). This hymn was our concluding song and was quickly followed by the closing prayer.
As soon as the prayer ended, the sister in front of me turned around and said "Was that you harmonizing? That was beautiful!"
I had no idea how to respond (and tbh had no idea what 'harmonizing' meant), but detecting from the context that this was a compliment I blushed and said something like "Oh, I am sure it wasn't me" and gestured to the sisters on either side of and behind me.
"No," she said, "I really think it was you. That was wonderful and it sounded so pretty!"
Once again, I demurred. But she continued "I'm serious, I'm going to learn how to do that! It shows you really don't have to hit those high notes to be part of the song and make it even more beautiful".
As she turned to speak to someone else, I desperately looked up 'harmonizing' on my phone: Harmonizing involves simultaneously singing multiple vocal parts, higher or lower than the main melody, creating a richer sound. Although each part differs from the main melody, harmony contributes to a fuller musical experience.
It's the first time in my life anyone has ever complimented my contribution to a musical number, or even seen me as an important part of the whole.
And now, because of her, I want to learn what it means to truly sing.
