Lunch today before a busy night is a smoothie bowl: 4 bananas • frozen raspberries • vanilla pb2 • water Topped: buckwheat groats • granola • coconut • goji berries • raspberries I thought I'd take some time today to talk about ketosis and why it has become such an issue: Basically, ketosis is "starvation mode" where your body uses fats and proteins for energy. Ketosis occurs in two ways first during actual starvation or even when you haven't eaten in a few hours and second, on low carb diets. When our bodies do not have sufficient carbohydrates to convert into glucose for energy, our bodies begin to rely on our backup stores of fat and muscle ( protein), or dietary fat and protein, in order to keep us alive. Your body converts these into ketone bodies, which are used in place of glucose. As time goes on, you can/will lose a substantial amount of weight because literally, it is eating your body away. And yes, weight loss, to you might sound like success, but wait because the end isn't looking so hot. This is because, overtime, as the ketones build up in your system, it creates a highly acidic environment which can lead to organ damage as well as many more illnesses like cancer. Yes, it gets worse.. Since the fats and proteins are being used for energy primarily, instead of going towards other vital body functions like nutrient absorption and enzyme production, your body actually starts to die. Your brain starts directing you to eat foods high in carbs. This is because it doesn't want to survive off of ketones alone. And if you are wondering, yes, this is exactly why people on low carb and calorie diets always end up binging, then gain weight. All due to the fact that your body realized it needs to replenish the body weight that it has eaten away. Further, your body is beginning to prep for the next famine in its environment aka the next time you starve your body of sufficient nutrients and energy ( carbs). Let this be a lesson, eat food when you are hungry and stop being so fucking scared of carbs. That is your fuel!
