What happens AFTER you get shredded??? - Here is a great example thanks to my client Cameron @pnw.trans.dad - Cameron wanted to get shredded for an event this summer, and as you can see, he put in the work and reached his goal. - Staying shredded year around isn’t sustainable, and his next goal is to put on more mass to compete at the @iatbp.official in 2023 😁 - So how do you move from a diet phase to a gaining phase without gaining all the weight back and then some? - You may have heard the term “reverse diet”. - I feel like the term reverse diet has become a bit of a buzzword much like “starvation mode” has. Both of these terms seem like magic mythical creatures of the diet world when in fact they are decently simple concepts that are not magical at all 😅 - So what is a reverse diet and how does it work? - Reverse diet is slowly increasing calories after a diet phase ends to eventually get you back up to maintenance calories and then eventually into a surplus. - In theory, this should help minimize fat gain while focusing on gaining muscle. - As you can see, Cameron’s reverse diet is going well! A cautionary #transformationtuesday .⚠️. . This is an example of what happens when you have been in a rather large calorie deficit for while, followed by disordered eating (over-eating, stress eating, poor food choices). Right after my competition on Nov 14th I slipped back into old stress-driven eating habits. I was not tracking calories or macros and I was eating lots of food high in sugar,. The plan was to #reversediet back to my usual maintenance calories, but I failed at that miserably. I had a large unexpected life event that caused a major amount of stress, and simply fell off the wagon. My training was still dialed in, but my nutrition was not. . On December 1st I took a usual progress pic and was smacked in the face by the results of my mistakes. I was heavier than I was before starting my competition prep. So, I got back on track! After a week at a relatively minor deficit (300 - 400 calories per day), I am slowly getting back to where I want to be again. . I believe that sharing failures is just as important as sharing successes. It allows other people to learn from them. We are all human. Nearly everyone makes mistakes or gets off track. The important thing is to not wallow in despair and give up. Instead, get back on track! Chalk it up to a hard lesson learned and put it behind you. . What a difference a determined mind makes! . . This improvement season has been way different! Left was mid contest prep in 2017 Right was last week improvement season on a reverse diet. Contest prep can be taxing on our body depending on how long we prep. It's unrealistic to diet or eat really low calories for an extented amount of time and think you'll keep losing weight....our body adapts well and our metabolism slows down. Having a SOLID plan (like a reverse dieting plan that my coach, @tonya_andrea_ifbbpro created for me) to gradually increase your calories and improve your metabolism is the key to making improvement/building(off) season really beneficial so that you're in a great place once you decide its "cutting" time! I was tired of starting over and having to werq "overtime" to release fat (it seems like it got harder & harder each prep), so I made a commitment this year to be more consistent, intentional and mindful about everything I eat.
