Shoelace Pose Deconstructed

Shoelace, the yin version of gomukhasana (cow-faced pose) is a fantastic hip opener working on the outer hip muscles...

Yin yoga is an excellent way to end a crazy day. This shoe lace pose works on the gall bladder, liver and kidneys and if you lean forward, it also affects the urinary bladder and massages the stomach, so it's a great pose for after dinner. The shoelace lengthens the piriformis - small muscle in the hip that forms part of the external rotators; the tensor fascia latae and the iliotibial band - both of which are long tendonous connective tissue that gets very tight, particularly for runners!

The way I like to get into the pose is to start on all fours an fold one behind the other. Move your feet out to the sides and sit down in the middle. Try to stack your knees on top of each other, and make sure both sit bones are anchored to the earth.

Hold for 3-5 minutes each side or whenever you're ready to leave. When coming out of the pose, lean forward and undo the legs and windscreen wiper the legs a few times.

If your hips are tight sit on pillows or a block, making sure your hips are higher then your knees; If you find it hard to have both knees bent, try extending the bottom leg; if you have any back pathologies that prevent you from leaning forward then just sit up straight.
