Insane theory brain man is here to share an insane theory of what is going on in the story because I read the episodes too quickly when they come out and then sit there and wait impatiently for the next one. SPOILERS FOR ALL EPISODES UP TO and including 21!!!!!!
Warnings: Bad grammar; I am having three shifts back to back so I am eepy and writing this really fast
Hey.
OK so, *cough cough... DARKWICK SET UP THE MC.
"Woah Prince, that is one big claim to be making." Let me explain.
For this to make sense we need to establish three things: what Darkwick does, who the traitor is, what Darkwick wants to do.
The traitor is Haku, I think a lot of us are kind of onto it by now but it is really obvious in the story at this point, and it was all but confirmed in the previous frostheim episode because why else would they send him and only him to get the thingy-majigy from the island while telling everyone else untrue information about where that thing is and how it works? (like, they said you can't touch it, but bro straight up grasps the fuck out of it to pick it up???) We will come back to Haku in two seconds.
Now, we know Darkwick is a research institution with questionable ethics procedures (they won't let me do research that involves interviewing adults who can give informed consent without using 98 ethics forms but Darkwick can literally just kidnap a Romanian boy and put him in sub-optimal conditions for being a werewolf, okay? sure? put him in a moldy cave with on straight dirt with no heating system without any enrichment, sure.) They seem to view anything anomolous, including the ghouls who are closer to human than anything else, as lesser and as dangerous, and it seems a bulk of their research has to do with testing on human subjects while pretending it wasn't on purpose. How do I know this? well, let's look at the first Mortkranken episode. What happens in that one? a regular human student somehow gets a substance that is really hard to come by, that barely has any research done on, that the student gets basically out of nowhere through a "mysterious source" (Mind you, the only source for this substance we've seen in canon is kept in Mortkranken and is intact and unharmed), guess who is unphased by this situation? the institution itself, why? because they did it. they're just like "OH NO PROPERTY DAMAGE! students, clean this up."
But what does Darkwick want to achieve? I don't know. Most likely, just like, evil research. they want to do unethical things, pass them on as ethical "it's a case study, the case was naturally occurring, we just happened to be there at the right time in the right place to study it as it was happening." THEREFORE GETTING TO MY POINT:
Back to Haku, he is found in odd places throughout the story, and when you look at the latest episode and compare it to the first one, there is an uneasy conclusion you are forced to confront (in my opinion):
okie so, when we first see the Kyklos, it's very very out of nowhere. Just, MC on bus, big monster, OH LOOK IT'S MR. I-WILL-SAVE-YOU Haku, who takes MC out of the situation and immediately takes them to the institution, who immediately is like "oh, no worries random person we didn't select for this on purpose, go right ahead and join the second years it is a great coincidence we just so happen to be in the start of the academic year and can get you through the initiation ceremony, who could have guessed a 'random' anomaly will attack a 'random' human right before the academic year starts?"
Their goal so far with MC is to get the MC to turn, they want everything to fail on purpose so they have a kyklos to study in depth, getting the ghouls to be emotionally attached to MC is also a bonus because how can they kill the kyklos when five minutes ago it was their bestie who went through all that collective mission trauma with them? they did everything they could to not get MC to figure the curse out and find a way out of it, either by trying to convince the MC that "no one knows how to solve this, oopsie daisy, you just need to wait it out and we will find the solution for you" or by going after Ghouls that could figure it out: Romeo (who is presented as being against darkwick in lots of ways, they legit tried to kill him.), Yuri + kind of Jiro (they restrict Mortkranken's access to files, cases, patients, equipment, etc), Probably others, moving on.
back to Haku. Look, last episode, it wasn't even a consideration on whether or not he should join the mission group, he walked into the room with MC by rizzing his way in and then the chancellor was talking to him and MC as if it is obvious he is joining and then he was part of it immediately. then at the end bro was like "OH YOU'RE GOING TO GO ON THE TRAIN? I WAS JUST THINKING OF NOT DOING THAT, BYE!" and fucks off, this is sus af because his whole thing the entire episode was keeping track of the kyklos, he had to have known it was no longer in the park and was going to attack again and was hence following the true mission he was given to let it attack MC again.
In the prologue, most of the ghouls' dialogue is like "you were not meant to get involved in this" in one way or another, which to me also points at "this" being a planned situation that they were dragged into, which most likely to me means that if and when they figure it out that there will be a thing against the institution because what else can happen when you get all those ghouls highly attached to a little human and then go "oh yeah we were trying to kill this human the whole time in order to see what will happen"
anyways so, to conclude, my messy and badly written theory is;
Darkwick selected the MC to get infected with the Kyklos curse, led the Kyklos to them, and got them into the institution to better control the situation, Haku is in on the whole thing (most likely through blackmail or something, I doubt he'd be in on it because he's evil, he's cute, we love him, anyways) , as the story progresses we see hints of Darkwick doing similar things to other people/not caring for their forced participants (look at MC's dorm, and Lyca's prison :( ) anyways, they then get Haku to lead the group to 'find the kyklos' trapping the MC with the kyklos again. boom.]
Bonus: based on the teaser for the next episode, I believe we will get flashbacks of how Haku ended up tangled in the situation and what made him do everything (most likely blackmail)
