A/N: I wanted to step away from the more commonly used Greek/Norse inspirations and highlight how rich and powerful African spiritual and folkloric traditions can be. My OC is a creative homage to Oya, an Orisha from Yoruba tradition, and the Impundulu, a Lightning Bird figure from Zulu and Xhosa folklore.

She is not meant to be a direct portrayal of either figure, and I don’t claim ownership over these traditions. I’m writing from admiration and respect, and I encourage readers to learn more from sources rooted in the cultures these figures come from.

Oya/Impundulu Inspiration & Archetype

Tempest is heavily inspired by two storm-linked figures from African spiritual and folkloric traditions: Oya/Ọya, an Orisha associated with storms, winds, transformation, death, and rebirth in Yoruba tradition; and the Impundulu, often known as the Lightning Bird, a being from Zulu and Xhosa folklore associated with lightning, immortality, blood, misfortune, and hidden power.

Oya’s influence in Tempest is not meant as a direct portrayal of the Orisha herself, but as an archetypal inspiration: fierce change, destructive renewal, love that is not always gentle, and the force of storms as both danger and liberation. Oya is often understood as powerful, transformative, and deeply respected, connected to thresholds, upheaval, and the passage between life and death.

The Impundulu influence represents a darker inheritance: the storm as curse, hunger, secrecy, and ancestral burden. In some stories, the Impundulu is tied to witchcraft, bloodlines, seduction, vampirism, illness, and dangerous knowledge. It may appear as a great bird, a beautiful human, or an unseen affliction. For Tempest, this side symbolizes the fear of becoming something harmful, especially when darkness has been passed down through family, history, or spiritual legacy.

Together, these inspirations shape Tempest's internal struggle on her journey to reclaim her soul.

Trethysia

My character! This is her uncorrupted form. She's the one who took the Book of Vile Darkness. She died in the fight with Iris and was consumed by the book. Shes now the demon inside it hahaha.

She was abandoned as an egg by her parents and was adopted by the ShadowWing tribe and grew up in their culture. She left to explore the world as a training mission and ended up joining AirClan.

She is currently looking for a vessel to take revenge on Iris for killing her.

Random Asks for your BG3 Character

I was looking through my feed and @lucretiouswept had this reblogged from @knightofbhaal and my new goal is to do at least one of these for each of my characters. Vanna and Chione answered one although not the full list and vanna has his own somewhere so this time it’s Morin’s turn.

How important is your character’s race (e.g. human, drow, aasimar) to them/their story? Does it inform who they are, or is it more incidental? For Morin I think it’s more incidental. He does get blow back for being a tiefling and he does want to help his people but unless he’s really around other tieflings he often ignores it. After all as a bhaalspawn he already unnerves people.

2. How or why did you choose your character’s class(es)? At first he was an aberrant mind sorcerer but the class just didn’t fit him and since his best friend is Gale it made sense to have a class that was proficient in Arcana plus I love space. Thus cosmic sorcerer was picked. However the later levels of the class didn’t sound like him and the group just kept breaking out into musical scores during act 2, so it made sense to continue the sky theme as a storm bard.

3.Has your character ever had a day job unrelated to their class? If no, what do you think they’d be suited for? Well they were the choosen for Bhaal, and thus went around as a criminal mastermind/murderer? However I think after everything calms down they wouldn’t mind rescuing and rehabilitating animals.

4.In a world full of both mortals and functional immortals, how does your character feel about their age and lifespan? Does this affect their relationship with other characters? Morin is a bit hesitant, considering his partners are Shadowheart and astarion he wondered if starting a relationship with both of them was the right choice, his life span was to his knowledge so much shorter. When he gets his memories back and realizes what he is and then when he becomes a choosen he’s worried he’ll outlive them. He doesn’t know what his life span is.

5. Where is your character from? How do they feel about that place now?

Morin grew up in a little town by the coast, however between Bhaal and a devil, the town is deserted and carries bad memories. Then he lived in baldur’s gate but baldur’s gate is the memory of what he allowed bhaal to shape him into.

6. What is something surprising that your character is good at? Swordsmanship. You wouldn’t expect it from a sorcerer, but Morin is really good with a sword, or any kind of blade.

7. What is a minor or mundane flaw your character has? (e.g. bad music taste, rude to service employees) he can be judgey to people who whack off their hair or who kill plants for no good reason. He tries not to be, but there is always that disappointed look.

8. Does your character have a best friend in the party? Who is it, and why do they get along? His best friend in the party is karlach, lora and Gale. Lora has his sense of humor and they’re like family. Karlach values his spirit and his heart and is dating Lora. Gale loves talking to him about their different experiences with magic and that Morin treats him special because he’s Gale not a wizard prodigy.

9. Everyone loves a (usually tragic) backstory. In as few words as possible, what’s theirs? Was brainwashed and controlled into murdering their village and their adopted parents. Child of the god of murder.

10. What’s one irrelevant detail about your character that will never come up in-game/writing/etc but you love anyway? Morin has a degree in jewelry making. He’s made and crafted all the jewelry he wears.
