New sulfur dioxide conversion method may transform current industrial techniques
A single-step, plasma-enhanced catalytic process to convert sulfur dioxide to pure sulfur from tail gas streams may provide a promising, more environmentally-friendly alternative to current multistage thermal, catalytic and absorptive processes, according to scientists at Penn State.
"Sulfur dioxides can cause significant environmental problems like acid rain, and it can cause sea acidification," said Xiaoxing Wang, associate research professor at the Penn State EMS Energy Institute. "Sulfur can also contribute to fine particulate matter in the air we breathe, which can be more severe than the sulfur dioxide itself."
Exposure to particulate matter was estimated to cause 4.2 million premature deaths and more than 100 million disability-adjusted life years -- which measures years lost due to illness, disability or death -- according to the Lancet Global Burden of Diseases Study, published in 2015.
According to Wang, current desulfurization methods can successfully remove sulfur dioxide from tail gas streams but not without significant drawbacks.
Flue gas desulfurization technologies, for example, are the most used methods to capture sulfur dioxide, but these processes create a large amount of solid waste in the form of metal sulfate that requires disposal. Furthermore, these processes produce wastewater that requires additional treatment, making the overall method costly and environmentally unfriendly.

A new report by Greenpeace International pinpointed the world's worst sources of sulfur dioxide pollution, an irritant gas that harms human health. India has seized the top spot from Russia and China, contributing nearly 15 percent of global sulfur dioxide emissions.
Australia, a sparsely populated country, that burns a tremendous amount of coal for power and also mines copper, lead and zinc ranked 12th on the list, according to the report, as the Australian Associated Press reported.
[The US is ninth on the list.]
The report singled out Australian air pollution standards as being too lax, since it allows power stations to emit sulfur dioxide at higher rates than in China and the European Union, as the Guardian reported. In fact, Australia has no regulations in place to limit sulfur dioxide emissions. Australia's air pollution standards are a target for criticism and political action since its standards are now 11 times higher than what the World Health Organization recommends.
"We need governments to be bringing in new standards backed by health organizations," said Jonathan Moylan, a Greenpeace Australia Pacific campaigner, as the Australian Associated Press reported.
Air pollution in Australia is a factor in 4,000 premature deaths each year, more than twice as many as the number of traffic related fatalities there each year. While sulfur dioxide is a main contributor to acid rain and its toxic particles negatively affect human health, contributing to heart and lung disease, as well as dementia.
A theory
So Venus is extremely hot and covered by a reflective cloud of sulfuric gas because of its high number of volcanic activity. Venus has over 10,000 volcanoes on its surface. Volcanoes emit natural carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. The two gases combined create the greenhouse effect. The cloud of SO2 at the edge of Venus’ atmosphere traps the CO2 and heat, causing temperatures to get to 900 degrees fahrenheit.
Earth has 1500 volcanoes on its surface. Every volcano emits CO2 and SO2. Earth also has a lot of artificial CO2 and SO2 emotions. It is my theory, that if the people on Earth don’t put n the effort to drastically lower these emissions(keep in mind, there is no getting rid of them entirely as a percentage of the emissions are natural) Earth will develop a similar cloud trapping in heat and an abundance of CO2 and SO2. Earth could become the next Venus...
Venus became the way it is due to major volcanic activity, but with certain industries emitting high levels of these gases, that could be our cause. It’s just a theory, but we could have a serious problem on our hands.
Keep in mind, our space craft can incinerate getting within a few miles of the sulfur cloud on Venus. If this happens, all life on Earth will cease to exist.
