Hello! In your submission to our blog, you talked about magic in the innerworld. We don't know much about World of Warcraft (little to nothing), and I was wondering if you could go more in-depth about how magic functions in the innerworld such as how it's used, the types of magic, what it looks like, who can use it and to what extent, etc!
Of course, this is only if you are comfortable, thanks!
Longggg answer warning! :D
Hello there! I have a huge note in Obsidian just for magic. I'd be happy to tell you all about it. Seems like it could help someone who is thinking about adding a magic system to their inner world <3
We all love the game, some more than others. We consider it the game that saved our life so there are a lot of elements.
In World of Warcraft, there are 3 fonts of extremely powerful magic. The 2nd well of Eternity, the Nightwell, and the Sunwell. 2 of them are lakes while the Nightwell is more like swirling energy that is contained in a structure.
Our inner world is a paracosm. A highly detailed and complex world that has taken the last 10 years to get this to this point.
In this world, the first thing that appeared was the Nightwell but in our case, it looks exactly like the 2nd well of Eternity. Years after it popped into existence, the Sunwell appeared. No NPC is allowed in.
Above is the 2nd well of eternity in-game but this is what our Nightwell looks like
Above is the Sunwell in-game (and my background on my profile ;P) Although ours is outside
There are leylines scattered throughout the world, deep in the ground. They are essentially blood vessels that carry raw magical energy and they all begin and end at the Nightwell & Sunwell. The magical energy that seeps into the air is what causes people to be able to harness magic.
These are our magic systems
Nature magic such as water, lightning, ice, fire, wind, healing, and light. The most common type of magic. We all use this type.
Holy magic can cure sickness, mend broken bones, remove aches, pains, and stiffness. It can help ease your mind and make you feel better. Very painful to demons but can only stun beings infused with shadow magic. So far only one member can use this type.
Death magic is used to resurrect, help with reincarnation, and enhances your natural ability to use any type of magic. One member can use this type.
Shadow magic is the manifestation of the void. Can raise the dead and enhances your natural ability to use any type of magic. Extremely powerful but the more you use it, the more you lose your mind. Only 3 members can use this type
Shadow- black & dark purple
Fel magic which is the void/holy energy colliding. It's a highly destructive and extremely addictive kind of energy. Causes mutations to your body. One member can use this type
Alteration magic is the ability to use telekinesis, teleportation, and increase one's strength. We all use this type
There is a world tree that sits above the Nightwell (like the picture shows) Only system members are directly connected to it which makes magic easy to use. We have NPCs and their magic ability solely depends on their species but there isn't anyone that can't use it.
These are the cons of magic use
Alteration magic as well as healing can make you tired/weak.
Shadow magic can impact your sight, from temporary or permanent blindness, hypersensitivity, to seeing/hearing hallucinations (constant whispers), or your vision being forced into seeing other spectrums (ultraviolet, radio waves, etc)
Light magic makes the user glow, starting at a low shine and ending where they blind everyone and everything around them, burning things, destroying eyesight, and ultimately ending with their body becoming energy, and the user dying.
Death magic can cause your spirit to be pulled into limbo
Water magic can dehydrate the user
Ice magic lowers your body temperature
Fire magic raises it (Fatal levels of use makes you spontaneously combust)
Lightning magic can cause random fires and kill people surrounding you
Wind magic can cause hurricane or tornado-like winds if not controlled properly
Using any magic too often usually results in weakness but using too much magic (whether through rapid-fire spells or too powerful spells) can physically start to rip their body apart/burn it because of energy overload.
The tree prevents the members from suffering from most of those. We have a lot more stamina. All but one of us get really weak after a while. For that one member, if they keep pushing it, they'll literally lose control of themselves and attack anyone nearby. We have to remind them to take back control.
If our emotions are strong, our magic can become chaotic and involuntary like accidentally freezing/scorching anything we touch and/or sparks of lightning shooting around us. The same thing can happen to NPCs (depending on what magic they specialize in)
On what our magic is used for, it's mostly used for protection and fighting. A lot of demons, dragons, and animals infused with fel & shadow roam that spooky forest I mentioned. If not properly dealt with, it can cause a decrease in mental health. Besides that, the magic is used for anything it's needed for
While some of this was molded by us, most of it formed naturally like our newest power. It's telepathy, which is what we use to communicate. It only appeared once I accepted we were a system. None of us are the best at it yet so our communication can be cut off randomly/abruptly like someone hanging up a phone.
When each of us front, it feels like we were just lucid dreaming but unsure what the dream was about. Sometimes we may remember small bits and pieces though
One last little thing is that since we are all connected to the tree, if we die in the inner world, we'll be reborn in the waters of the Nightwell (We are aware that this is not some alternate reality where we can actually “die” or “get hurt”)
Whew, that was a lot! X3 Thank you for the ask! We love talking/learning about inner worlds! <3 <3
